In the last example, the phosphates are supposed to be +10... I accidentally wrote down -10

At 19:58 it should be positive 10 correct? Not negative since +5 * 2 is +10 and since we need -2 & O is -14 and H is +2

Ah yes you’re correct. It is + 10 like you’re saying not -10... I really hope from the viewers perspective that was obvious it’s hard for me to gauge that from the creators perspective...

@@sciencesimplified3890 If the viewer is following along, then they'll know it's +10. :) Thank you for all your hard work!

so in summary: FORMAL CHARGE FC = #Ve in periodic table - #Ve it has in compound (include bonds/ Ve) Oxidation # = number of tug of way it won (- for winner) (only count bonds NOT valence e) I hope I summarized it right, thank you A TON!

At 9:15, for the two carbons that are methyl groups off of that middle carbon, would their oxidation numbers be -3 each since they "win" against the hydrogens?

can we study mechanism of organic reaction using the oxidation number instead of formal charge? i know it can be useless but it would be cool to have to different point of view in describing the same thing

Thank you for your videos! Feel like the way you break up the videos is a lot more digestible and less daunting than some 3 hour long videos
