The same thing but we express it in the various way called formal or informal. Both are helping me understand better the things I have learned. In fact, I put all videos in an order, on the ground that I need firstly most in my own order and have been watching. This lesson has become really amazing. My first goal is to improve my listening skills. Despite the fact that I get what you says or said, I have, I do believe, a long way to reach my aim. Because, when I listen to radio I am not able to have caught some words, even if I get the main topic. By and large, I listen to michigan radio, bbc or chicago radio and npr by internet. From this point of view, this lesson really opened a new door to me. There are many ways to explain myself to someone else. It gives some choice to me. Prior to this, I have been feeling that I need to follow some pattern. Not I feel it now. Formal or informal explanation or attidude depends on me and the situation where I am. That's nice. Thanks so much.

Hello Jennifer! It was invincible! Thanks a bunch! I liked it! Even so, it seems to me that to change the register this comes to not only good English skills but also to the general culture of the person who speaks.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 года назад
Hi Sergei. It's true that one's first culture can influence your approach towards people. For example, how are requests usually made, as questions or commands? One's personality is a factor too. Is the person generally demanding or humble? Are they confident or shy? Thanks for commenting!

I'm sure others do. There are different ways to present formal and informal English. Some may focus on idioms and phrasal verbs, which are more typical of everyday conversation. Some teach essay writing, which requires more formal grammar and academic vocabulary. I like to compare and contrast the two registers. It's good to know the expressions that English speakers use in very informal situations: I haven't heard a dickie bird from that client. - This means 'I have not heard anything from that client. I have heard nada from that client and I have zilch to report. Nada and zilch both mean zero or nothing. There's been naff all response from that client. - Naff all means 'zero.' ' Do one! - This means 'leave.' I don't have a Scooby! - I do not have a clue. 'Dunno,' - I do not know. You got the wrong end of the stick there - You misunderstood me. Zip it! - Be quiet. Listen up - Pay attention. Yo! - This means 'Hello' Do you want some scoff? - Do you want something to eat? Get your chatting gear around this delicious sandwich, . - Chatting gear means 'mouth.' The slang terms in British English are vast. When we have a look at cockney rhyming slang, you'll see what I mean.Cockney rhyming slang is commonly used in London: boat = face apple and pairs = stairs sky diver = £5 pony = £500 mutton = deaf. Brahms and Liszt = drunk cream crackered = tired It's a bit like learning a new language when we see how the Londoners converse informally.

@Englishwithjennifer 3 года назад
Hi. When I have time, I can type in Russian, but my speed in English is much faster. Given the number of comments and messages I respond to across social media, I have to work efficiently. :) Because I teach English a wide audience, I avoid Russian translations in my videos. I also feel that part of my job is to facilitate the process of thinking in English. Providing full translations can work against that goal. Have you watched my Basic English videos with Flavia and Andreia? I don't speak Portuguese, so there are almost no translations. They learn to guess my meaning and stay in English as much as possible. To answer your question, I majored in Russian studies back in college. Всего хорошего!

Those can be similar constructions, but we use "to-be" more with official changes in status: the bride-to-be, the king-to-be, etc. "Would be" is more about aspirations. That's my opinion. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bride-to-be

There is quite a contrast between formal and informal English. We could even go a level lower with informal chat. These types of conversations would be with people you're very familiar with: "Any questions, you lot? Okay, you can all do one then." "Okay zip it and listen up!" "He'll have to give me longer here. I'm not Superman." "I've heard naff all from that client." "I don't have a Scooby, Doo I;m afraid. "I'm off for scoff. Coming?" "Okay, get your chatting gear around your lunch now, teamsters!" "Am I talking in another language here?" "You got the wrong end of the stick there." "Yo! Time to go!" And who can forget Biff from Back To The Future. I just wonder how formal he'd be at the end his lecture? "Okay, make like a tree and get out of here!"
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 года назад
Yes, you can get plain rude: Zip it, people! Good variation: Listen up! I like Biff Tannen's version: Make like a tree and get out of here. Ha ha. I wonder how many people get the Scooby Doo reference. All joking aside, I could add half a dozen more variations to each question in my "test." As I was editing, I was thinking about this one: "Hey, anybody want to grab a bite to eat with me?"
