Former bank robber Cain Vincent Dyer looks at 11 bank-robbery scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rates them based on realism.
Dyer breaks down "Heat" (1995), "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2012), "The Dark Knight" (2008), "Cherry" (2021), "Den of Thieves" (2018), "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "Baby Driver" (2017), "Out of Sight" (1998), "Money Heist" (2017), "The Town" (2010), and "Inside Man" (2006).
Dyer served in the United States Marine Corps. He turned to bank robbery after threats to his family by a Mexican cartel. He was nicknamed the "kangaroo bandit," having been captured on CCTV stuffing cash into a backpack worn on his chest. He says he robbed over 100 banks across California between 1999 and 2001. He eventually turned himself in and served nine years in prison after pleading guilty to six robberies. He now works as a life coach and motivational speaker, helping newly released prisoners reintegrate into society. He's also a partner in two production companies.

Turning yourself in doesn't mean you weren't about to get caught. The FBI was likely making their presence known and stressing him out. There's a psychological breaking point where he saw his lifestyle become unsustainable. Those constant stressors could have led to him making simple mistakes or even committing self sabatoge on his next robbery which could cost him his life. He seems like the kind of dude that would consider all those angles.

over 100. 0:15 but it was a span of two years. so one every week, for two years. he was a real working man, industrious. not a one-hit-wonder. _if_ that is really verifiable true what he claims, here is real-life breathing, the highest international standard, even historical level, professional that is still alive. you are right, if that is documented, verifiable true, at least Netflix would be appropriate.

It's great seeing a professional tell how it's really done. I dated a girl who's ex tried robbing a bank. I knew people that knew him and they told me the same story later on so I knew she wasn't lying. The man was high on heroin, went in with a note and handed it to them, the guy was so high he nodded off standing there so the woman had time to call the cops. She came back and said "Excuse me sir!" and he came to, she handed him the money and the second he walked out he got jumped on by the whole robbery squad. Like how do you nod off mid bank robbery that's something straight out of a comedy movie. I died laughing when she told me the story but I mean it's kind of sad what drugs do to people. He didn't get a whole lot of time for it cause he used a note and they clearly knew he had a bad drug problem with how everything happened. Still one of my favorite failed crime stories I've ever heard.
@sorenleiner3878
@sorenleiner3878 Год назад
That sounds so surreal that it could be true again :D it sounds like the start of a bad joke: "there is a robber walking into a bank ... and he starts sleeping" Feeling little bit sad about the guy to be honest ... at least he tried ^^ :D

@soren3569 Год назад
A buddy of mine in high school got into drugs and started holding up gas stations with a couple other kids (all High School aged). They got through four or five, I think, before they got busted. The cops caught my friend at his girlfriend's house; I forget the second, but the third was busted when he wore his letterman jacket--with his name embroidered on it--into a Dunkin' Donuts. Too much drugs make you stupid, kids.
@brandonc422
@brandonc422 Год назад
@@sorenleiner3878 Yeah that's why I laugh about it but still find it kind of sad. He didn't get a whole lot of time for it cause of the way it happened his lawyer was able to convince the judge he wasn't going to hurt anyone and that the issue was more to do with drugs than anything. He served less than a year and was on restrictions for I think two more years. The law is pretty lenient here in Canada when it comes to first time non-violent offenders that's crimes are heavily influenced by drugs. He had a lot of counselling and all that. Not sure where he is or what he's doing cause I'm not with that girl anymore and the two other mutual friends I had with the guy I haven't talked to in a couple years. Hope he's doing well though.

Best robbery I ever heard of was perpetrated by a guy I went to high school with. He went to the customer service counter of a Meijer, handed them a note simply saying "this is a robbery, I have a gun, give me all the money." Kept his hands in his pockets the whole time until the money was handed to him and he walked out unchallenged. To his car. With his license plates. His identity was confirmed by witnesses and every security camera because he wore no mask. He didn't actually have a gun. Just a wicked drug addiction and a total inability to think things all the way through. He was arrested before an hour had passed and the trial was most likely very short.

Yeah, they don't care if you actually have the weapon. If the implication is there then you are screwed. Teenagers have used items in their pockets to make it look like their was a outline in a hoodie pocket of what was to be assumed as a firearm when robbing places and one place was not a bank, it was a convenience store at night with no other customers so when the idiots, I mean robbers were shot and died, the only thing that mattered was that they had any item in their pocket that could create the outline so the person believed they were in danger of being shot. The parents were upset their kids were shot while robbing a place at what the kids had implied was gunpoint, but not upset at the kids, but the adult who shot them when they threatened to kill him if he didn't listen to them. A+ parenting skills there.
@herbderbler1585
@herbderbler1585 Год назад
@@blackdandelion5549 yep, the usual rose colored goggle nonsense. "You didn't have to kill him, he couldn't hurt anyone with a fake gun!" And how was the victim supposed to know that? Why should the victim assume anything less than the worst intentions? We've all seen the videos where the criminals decide to frag the victim just for the fun of it, even after they comply.

In the movie HEAT the alarm system and security cameras where turned off 30 minutes prior to them entering. The team switched a hardware component they accessed through a parking garage the night before in order to achieve this. The scene where the "alarms" where going off in the police HQ was actually just the phones ringing, the detectives all left in a rush because ( this was not shown in this breakdown ) one of them was just handed a piece of paper with a tip from a CI about the time and location of the robbery.

I was just thinking about that. I guess there are safeguards for law enforcement procedures that criminal activity wouldn’t necessarily have. If that makes sense
@Fearhoral
@Fearhoral Год назад
Because real law enforcement is dull and full of paperwork mostly and when there is "excitement" its generally the worst day for any of their lives. Law processes is boring and unless the movie is being handled in a comedic fashion, no producer is going to be willing to do even a compressed version of a trial. Now there are movies that get it pretty close and Legal Eagle or Attorney Tom do pretty good breakdowns but even as they say there are plenty of "Creative freedoms" that happen to make the movie entertaining. Like a witness rushing the stand or prosecution yelling at the Defendant Or even someone yelling at the judge and not being met with contempt of court.
@nekrataali

@@Fearhoral It's part of why The Wire is the GOAT of crime dramas. They get the police side of things correct and the entire 5 season show is only following two investigations: the Barksdale crew (who get usurped by Marlo Stanfield) and the dead girls in the shipping crate. Both cases are linked as it's the Greeks (who aren't actually Greek) that are the ones controlling Baltimore's supply of heroin. Part of the show's theme is how laws and institutions can get in the way of justice and morality. In order to show that, The Wire shows us every aspect of law enforcement, including McNutty typing up reports or entire police units out looking for screws.

@@nekrataali Wallander is great too (the one with Brannagh, is most faithful to the books and the best version). And it's no wonder with The Wire they had lots of former cops and criminals help them. A main character in the later seasons was actually on trial for shooting a bunch of people in real life, so they took the realism pretty far on that show. And Bubbles for instance was an actual Baltimore junkie and well known figure, basically he just plays himself in the series. A bunch of the lower level drug dealers where exactly that in real life. With minor character they basically just used the actual people of Baltimore.

One of my clients is ex FBI who's career focused on catching bank robbers in phoenix arizona. He said the best way to do it is to have someone you know go into the bank before you - attempt to cash a legitimate check for a large sum of cash and you come in behind him and take that cash and run once it's being placed on the desk for your friend to take. It's not legally considered a bank robbery, just a personal robbery - and your friend will likely get reimbursed. Typically - you would make more using this method than just asking the teller for cash - and there's almost zero risk of dye packs or anything like that. This advice was directly from an FBI agent who did this stuff for 40 years. Pretty crazy.

My guess is he made a deal with the FBI to essentially teach them how bank robbers think and act in return for a lesser sentence. They did it with Frank Abagnale Jr. and also do this with lots of cyber criminals nowadays. It's easier to get these guys to consult and give intel than to just jail them for years and years.
