In former British colonies around the world, many are remembering Queen Elizabeth II. Today, there are 14 commonwealth realms where the king is still recognized. NBC News’ Kerry Sanders reports from Jamaica where some demand an official apology from the royal family after centuries of slavery.

As a Korean, I personally mourn for her as the UK helped us a lot during the Korean war. That being said, Korea also experienced colonialism by Japan. If the former Japanese king dies, I would expect mixed reactions(mostly negative) from Korea as well. Colonialism is a tragedy in history.

40 million pounds paid by the country to release the slaves. No other nation made this sacrifice at the time, until the Americans near tore themselves to bits. This is credit to the crown. The Africans themselves were capturing and selling the slaves. Why are people criticising the British when their own cultures moral compass was not yet that accurate. You want an apology? Ask the old kings of the African states that sold you.

You say that as if numerous African Chiefs/warlords were doing that. Very few sold their enemies that loss in battle to Europeans and the Europeans controlled the Atlantic slave trade not Africans. Just because it obviously makes people like yourself uncomfortable to even chat about slavery doesn't mean you should be exaggerating the role Africans had in the slave trade. Europeans started that.

@@amante104 That's not correct. The fact that Africans were selling other Africans does not absolve Europeans of their role. And it wasn't just those who were taken prisoner in battle. They activity invaded over lands to capture slaves to sell to the Americas, Arabia and Europe. This was happening before the British empire was even born, or the French or Spanish empire for that matter. The Arabs had been buying slaves from Africa since before islam was created. The arabic word for black person literally translates as "slave". Now with all that said .. who abolished it? England.

Why some people expect today's people to apologise for past wrongs is ludicrous. One may as well insist today's Russians apologise to its own people for the slaughter Stalin caused or Portugal pay for the slave trade of 100s of years ago and the list is endless which would include almost all countries. We must react to today's events and only then can we blame those that wrong because they should have learned from history. A certain Vladimir Putin would fall into that category but we can not blame him for the sins of Stalin.

It was the British Navy who spent 100 years fighting to stop slavery in the world. African nations united to keep slavery and fought to keep slavery as their economic money maker. British why we dont have slavery legal or openly done except guess where....

Slavery is not a European exclusive trait. Happened all over the world and across multiple cultures. However Britain was one of the first to fully abolish it. People have a distaste against British due to its colonial past but fail to see the goods that have come from the empire.

They also forget or refuse to learn how the British went to South Africa and helped release 800,000 prisoners waiting to be taken to the Americas. They destroyed the prisons by blasting them with canon bombs. The British policed the high seas to stop the smuggling of slaves. No other country tried to stop this from happening.

What's rubbish is Britain still profited off the plantations after they abolish slavery. The people that still worked the lands weren't paid a fair wage or were left to starve and die. Britain turned its efforts to sell drugs in the Orient which was much more lucrative than paying for slaves to be shipped and then work the plantations.

@@harryselwind had the British not appeared, and the Africans not captured by their own people and sold into slavery, Jamaica would simply be a densely populated island full of Taino. What economy might have turnout we don't know. And frankly, they had 50 years of independence. I never hear of Chinese people demanding for reparations from the Opium Wars, I only ever heard colonies demanding for something as ridiculous as reparation. Boils down to incapable people sitting and waiting for a handout.

The issue here is that most of the people saying "we don't care about the Queen because of slavery" are not informed. Britain was the first the outlaw and abolish slavery even before the height of the Empire (Pax Britannica). Without the Queen and her father, many of these countries would not have existed. Even by WW2 the Empire was widely known as the British Commonwealth.
