Yeah but it’s a team game. Jordan can’t carry all himself. “I would never have called him the greatest player I’d ever seen if I didn’t mean it,” Bird told The Boston Globe. “It’s just God disguised as Michael Jordan.”

His trash talking was literal, he would tell you where he's going to go and how he was going to shoot it at the defensive end then come down the court and do exactly that. I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley “I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.” -James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury " The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy “Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan Jordan is the best scorer in NBA history, but Bird was the unicorn. There are no players like him in NBA history with so many skills and winning percentage. And there may never be another again, so it is difficult for younger fans to understand what Bird did. They focus on Jordan’s scoring and defense and miss all the other skills and winning that Bird brought to the table every game.

Larry had a wicked step back and looked opponents straight in the eye like he was going to kill them. That, and not knowing if he was going to shoot, pass, fake, or something else dropped the best of defenders. They would genuinely roll their ankles trying to guess the right direction to turn. That last one was Dominique Wilkins, the Human Highlight Reel.

Larry and Magic both entered the NBA in 1979. The confusion you have is that Larry was drafted a year earlier but decided to go back to college instead of going into the NBA right away. Larry won rookie of the year over magic with 63 votes against magic’s three votes.

@GazeboGazer 6 месяцев назад
MJ is the GOAT athletically, but IQ-wise Bird was able to do so many things offensively and defensively (without being fast, or able to soar like MJ), that he is the GOAT as an all-around basketball player/coach/executive. He never used the 3-point line until he hit the pros, and only averaged about 3 per game, but he used it so strategically to be the winning shot. Still, he averaged about 24 points per game, 10 boards per game, 6 assists per game, and 2 steals per game. He was the MVP 3 years IN A ROW; he WON THE FIRST THREE 3-point contests (I think Curry has lost it 5 of 7 times, but he is supposed to be the best?). BTW, Bird only did it for those 3 years so he retired the undefeated champion. He was the FIRST player to become a member of the 50-40-90 club, and he is only one of 3 who has done it multiple times, by doing it the first 2 years IN A ROW. He was Rookie of the Year; NBA All-Star 12 of his 13 years, All-Star game MVP in his third year; All-NBA First Team his first 9 SEASONS IN A ROW; All-Defensive Second Team 3 YEARS IN A ROW. The season after he won his third 3-point contest and his second 50-40-90 accomplishment, he was only able to play in six games due to Achilles tendon surgery on both heels, and he retired three years later with severe back problems. So severe, that he needed to lie on the floor when he wasn't in the game, and sometimes could barely put his uniform on. Funny how he has done so many things consecutively. Bird was the Coach of the Year with the Indiana Pacers, and Executive of the Year, as well. So, I'd say Larry Bird is THE GOAT OF BASKETBALL! Please, don't anyone take offense to anything. I'm just an old lady from Southern Indiana who is also an alum of Indiana State University Sycamores where Larry Bird starred, and was Player of the Year. I may be a little biased, but I have a very good argument to back it up.

Bird made the hard passes look easy.. Magic averaged 11 assists a game so he was way more profecient at passing than Larry was BUT Magic was a point guard that CONTROLLED the ball. Larry was a small forward that DIDNT control the ball. Bird is probably the BEST passer that DIDNT control the ball like a pg would..

Magic made easy passes look hard. Larry made hard passes look easy. That's the best description that I've heard. Their first nationally televised competition was actually in the NCAA finals. Larry had led his Indiana State team to their only finals appearance playing against Magic and his Michigan State Spartans. The Lakers-Celtics rivalry basically saved the NBA. When Larry and Magic arrived, the league was fading. The Finals were broadcast on tape delay so people could watch Gunsmoke at its regular time. You had to wait until after the evening news to see it. A Jordan-led Bulls were swept in two different playoff series by the Celtics never beating them in a playoff game and were under .500 overall against them in regular season games during Bird's time on the Celtics rooster. Larry spent his entire playing career with the Celtic organization. The last 5 years or so, he played with what was essentially a broken back, requiring being in traction at times. He had surgery on both achilles tendons and bone spurs in the season he missed. Only three players have won MVP three years on a row, one being Bird and the other two were Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Bird also received 67% of all votes cast for MVP during his caree After he retired from the Celtics, he became the coach of the Pacers and took them to their only appearance in the Finals. He was awarded as Coach of the year for his efforts. He then moved up the become the President of Basketball operations for the Pacers and received Executive of the Year for his work in that capacity.

Larry was one of the only players who had called him when he found out. He stood by Magic through the whole thing. I don't care if anyone thinks Larry Joe is the GOAT... The man he was spoke so much more... PS -- And he retired because his back was so bad, he was warned that if he continued to play, he could end up paralyzed. He said he didn't want to end up not being able to hold his children. And we he came out after the cheek fracture/concussion -- he was actually seeing double and had to guess which basket to shoot at. He won that game for his team.

The three-point shot didn't come around till 1986, bird won it in '86, '87'and '88, he was scheduled for a 4th appearance in '89, but he had the flu and had to miss his chance the 4 back-to-back to back-to-back. Back in 80s there wasn't FA like it is today. More players stayed with their teams for entirety of their career. The thing about Bird is he made the difficult look easy. So when it's hard to understand why defenders fall or that he's not flashy, it's because he was that good and that feared. I remember watching these games on TV growing up. Larry Bird was not about flamboyance & theatrics - its been said that many players made easy shots look hard ( theatrics) while Bird made hardshots look easy.

They didn’t even have a three point line until Larry’s rookie year. So it was a new thing, and he perfected it. He was the founding member of the 50-40-90 club too.

Bed is the GOAT, he was the best all around player. 5 straight 50/40/90 seasons, 1 steal away from a quadruple double team n only 3 quarters and decided to not play the 4th because they were so far ahead. Founder of 50/40/90 club, won all 3 point contests he entered and they were consecutive 86-88, 3 straight mvps and swept Jordan 3-0 in playoffs back to back years.

My feeling on the comparison between Larry Bird and Magic was that if you watched Magic run a fast break, his head would be on a swivel and he'd find an incredible pass. It might be one he saw a couple of seconds before and might be in any direction (including no-look). With Larry if he ran a break he would run down the entire length of the floor without looking around, and then pass to someone just by knowing they were there. Sense of smell or something. It was mystical.

Bro you might better do a little more research on Larry Bird. Michael Jordan couldn't win shit until after Bird retired. Michael Jordan never could beat Larry Bird. You young fellas don't seem to know much about the history of the NBA. If it didn't happen in the last 20 years you dont know nothing about it. No one playing in the NBA today is even close to being the goat.

Larry broke ankles because no one knew what he was going to do with the ball. He often had a clean shot but would pass it to a team mate. Sometimes he looked like he was going to make an easy pass...then shoot a difficult basket. James Worthy, said: ~He would rather guard Michael Jorden, than Larry Bird, because Larry was so unpredictable. He also said: ~Michael Jordon made you look slow, but Larry Bird made you look stupid. Larry, was broke down with a severe back injury, but still played on during his last 7 years while in severe pain. He said near the end of his career that every time he went out on the court, he wondered if he was going to end up in a wheelchair. I always wondered what Larry could have done if he hadn't been injured and played the last 7 years of his career in some horrible pain.

He swept MJ during Mike’s best year, arguably, as he won every accolade that year, except the playoffs. MJ never was able to beat Bird in the playoffs, even though he scored 63 points one game, and not even when Scotty Pippen joined him, though it was a tad bit closer. In fact, Jordan credits Bird and the Celtics, with teaching him to use his team; play with his team; that it’s a team sport. Bird did all of this in horrific pain too. People always talk about his back, achilles, or bone spurs in both ankles, but he also broke his hand really badly the summer before his first NBA training camp. He was playing baseball with his brother, the ball shattered his knuckle, and bent his finger out of place. He had to have surgery on it right away. He required many corrective surgeries on it, but it was never fully healed. Larry, himself, said he never had the same feel for the ball. Yet, he was still this good! When he did show up to camp, the doctors told the owners and manager that he was damaged goods. Red took him out to the court and had him shoot a few baskets. He told Larry, “you look alright to me, kid.” You should checkout Bird vs. Jordan or Bird’s best trash talking stories.

In comparing Bird and Magic passing, Magic definitely actively attempted to misdirect with his passes such that you might be hard pressed to follow the pass even if you were watching him. Bird didn't really do that, and opted for much more straightforward efficiency with his movement. Bird arguably had a bit better predictive capacity and seemed to just always know where everybody on the court was. What you prefer is really down to a matter of taste, but it's not too hard of an argument to say that one of the two of them is the best passer in NBA history.

Larry vs Mike? Bird's lifetime numbers against Jordan: 27/9/6 on 50/47/93 shooting splits and a 61% win percent across 24 games. Bird famously swept Jordan in the playoffs twice, but even in the regular season Bird elevated his game when MJ was on the court. MJ respected Larry as a GOAT

Bird dropped guys all the time because 1) he was the best passing forward the game has ever seen; 2) He had the most lethal true stepback jumper (not this gather step hoppy crap of today) in the game; 3) he made guys look silly routinely with the pass fakes. He didn't have to dribble and travel all over the place to create space.

Where he slammed his face, he had to go to the locker room. The other team took advantage of him not being there and they were ahead on points when Larry came back to play. He played the rest of the game with a fractured cheekbone, and Boston won the game. The games were better back then, and much tougher, not like the wimp games of today.

Jordan might be one of Bird's biggest fans. In 90 Bird was coming off double Achilles surgery. There were rumours that Celts might trade Larry. Jordan said "They would be idiotic to trade Bird but we will take him. I will take the cut to pay him. I make enough from outside stuff." He wasn't taking a cut to pay Scottie.
