This was once the Prince of Persia any% Speedrun World Record. This is the current WR: • [Former World Record] ... Where can I find and play Prince of Persia • How can I play Prince ...
Same. At least on PC. Our mom got a Windows 95 PC and this was the only ("real") game on it. I was pretty bad at it tbh, I don't recall ever getting very far, but it was a lot of fun regardless.
@@malcador the only way I finished this game was by using cheats. In MS DOS, if you appended "MEGAHIT" at the end of the launch, it'd enable cheats allowing for instant healing, unlimited time, additional life bars, instant killing an enemy, etc (it was "yippeeyahoo" for PoP S&F) - don't ask me why I remember this literally almost 30 years later when I can't recall what I had for breakfast this morning 🤣
@@Clavinovaman as an adult I have the same problem I had as a kid, I play 10 games at the same time in a rotation, and lose interest in most long before I finish, and those just get replaced with the next game which I will inevitably get sick of before I finish, ad etcetera ad infinitum.
@@teenspirit1 no doubt. I have one of those little Sega Genesis mini systems I hooked up to the computer and loaded up with roms from a few systems. My kids and I play some of the classics on it from time to time and those games are just so much more timing precise and stuff. Everything was analog back then too which made a difference with response time playing platformer games like Mario and such.
I am so attracted to this guy right now. Such a cool, funny, humble personality and his gaming skills on point. I was in between a panic attack and watching this speed run helped so much, the panic attack is gone. You're my hero ❤
Thank you for your kind words. I can tell you I was in a lot of panic myself during this run. I should mention that there are faster runs than this one. I am actually now in 7th place
I've played this game when I was 8 years old and this was only back in 2009 but I instantly fell in love with this game it's still one of my favorite games of all time
Very, very good play! Congratulation! I have download this game one week ago, after 30 years. I have finished it, but I always killed every guardian and take every superdrink I get. Very interesting to see this solution :D
Back in the day I read in a gamer magazine that the main character is not just drawn. They took a video of the athletic son of a developer and based the animations on that.
Actually, the Developers little brother. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZW_eExHpTZI.html Althought the fighting is taking directly from an Errol Flynn movie.
Awesome, it feels good to be loved. Honestly, anyone can play this good if they have enough time. The game really has a low skill ceiling. There are no sub pixels and it only runs at 12 to 10 fps.
There is a Pacifist version of this run... Unfortunatly, the last door won't open unless Jaffar dies so runners often say "Jaffar I mean you no harm" before making him fall down the hole.
That was kind of awesome. I had recently changed to ingame time, so I kept increasing my ingame PB. I also made a few mistakes/did things unoptimally, but I guess none of that mattered to the final score.
The SNES version is very charming. I love the dust that the kid kicks up when he slides.... nice attention to detail. I wish it played more like the DOS version, but it had to work with a controller. There are some nice speedruns of the dos version.
24 minutes is pretty impressive.... but you gotta try for that sub 20 man. You can do it. You know that with 24 minute run you would be 25th on the Speedrun.com leaderboard!?! That's pretty impressive.
Such an interesting old classic! It was one of those games where everything was a bit of an event, the sound effects meant a lot too. Congratulations on the WR!!
I played a version on Mac. The mouse played a important role in the game. The prince was dressed up as a Arab medieval warrior and as far as I remember he has to fight Jaffar at the last round....
The mouse 🐁 usually has an important role in level 8, but the in the speedrun we usually skip the mouse... However! Recently we discovered a way to have the first level 8 guard knock us through a wall landing us at the end of level 8 and the mouse saves us again!
The creator of this game didn't do a proper search about the culture he created his game around! It's like creating a game based on the Japan culture and architecture and then call it the emperor of Guatemala!
Thanks! There is even a faster run here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kw4li-hOkE4.html by my friend Esteban Figueroa who currently has the WR.
So glad to see such an awesome speedrun of a DOS game as opposed to all the NES ones... I think I beat it in around 35 minutes as a kid, which was a massive achievement... yeah... 14 minutes, that's madness :D
Dude, if you beat the game in around 35 minutes... if you did that again, but recorded yourself running, you would be in 27th place on the Pop1 Speedrun.com leaderboard. Basicly, you are one of the best players. Might be a good time to get into speedrunning. Getting that Sub 20 feels so good!
@@TimothyMakin Ah..... then I must be misremembering that number, I really doubt I was speedrunner-levels of good, eventhough I played it a lot, lol. I definitely don't have the patience to be a speedrunner, which is why I respect it so much. Btw have you considered also doing PoP2? Now that one would be pure hell :D I've never even beaten it without cheats....
Well, that's 27th place out of 27 :P. Honestly, If you play this game you already are a speedrunner. If you just submitted any time you would be in 28th place. *I didn't submit untill I at least beat someone* Ya, I got to do PoP2 at some point... I honestly don't like it as much. I wish they haden't changed the gameplay... and I really really hate those floating head things.
@@TimothyMakin Yeah those were borderline unfair. I'm sure there's some strategy to them, but as far as I remember the sword just goes right through them, lol.
Played a lot in my childhood... could never finish. It was many years later I played again, and, after learning many tips and tricks I could finally complete this game, only once. But I was more than delighted. Reaching the ending on my own at last. Well, I needed much more time than this guy. 🙂
5:14 the fat máster... Hardest guard on the game, in my childhood i spent countless hours until i finally finish the game, with only 15 seconds on the clock!!!
The good thing about THAT guard(on level 8 actually) is that he is very consistent. A new strat is to actually have him push you through a wall that leads to the very end of the level.
But you did eventually beat it. I am guessing. It isn't a very hard game, but it is very unintutative. Beating Pop is like beating two games at once. You have to master these strange mechanics and then use them to beat the game. But you do feel a great sense of accomplishment when you finally beat it.
@@TimothyMakinActually, yes I beat it... and I even worked at Ubisoft on another Prince of Persia title thereafter, which included a version of this game bundled in as an extra. One of our devs had to hex-hack out the timer from the game to make it more palatable to a more modern audience ;) Still, great run!
man my uncle showed me this game on his pc when i was a lil kid. Used to play this game a lot🙌💯good times&the animations were so good back in the days.
Thanks, that's the cool thing about speedrunning. Most people only see that one run where you didn't fail a bunch :P So the really impressive part isn't the skill per se but the tenasity.
I actually have a tutorial on how to do it on my channel. Although you can actually easily go around him instead of getting the sword. If you lure him into the next room past where you fall, you can climb up and around him and not have to go get the sword.
I remember having somehow a different version. The level's color are either grey/blue or yellow/brighter, but green as in level 3 or brown/olive as in level 9. The sound was also a different one. The saw blades had higher and sharper sound just like the spikes. Being hurt by an enemy was also more a sound than a voice.
Wow! And I thought I was good at under 20 minutes. I also leapt through the blades and spikes, and did not take any drink, but I did finish off every guard.
Dooood this was a nice run! As for me, the farthest I could get was level 8. In the end I used that "prince megahit" exe cheat that allowed me to skip levels. lol at Jafar falling to his death instead of beaten in an epic sword battle
Level 8 is kind of the hump you have to get over to beat the game... The cool thing about "Prince Megahit" / "prince improved" is that you could use them to replay level 8.
I think I remeber acidentally jumping over a guard once as a kid, but I really didn't think it was Viable until I saw CapnClever's GDQ run: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-USv8OQbg73M.html
Omg..14 minutes..😲 Wow...👏👏👏 I'm new to this speed run thing but damn..this is insane.😅 Forgive me if it's wrong but is there any mods in use during the run?
No mods. Although it isn't hard to mod this game. Are you intrested in Speedrunning this? We have a Discord and eveyone is friendly and shares all the best strats.
Ah, the "Lurker" fortunatly because he is soooo aggressive he is actually MORE consistent and allows for a really cool NEW strat on level 8: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kw4li-hOkE4.html
“Okay so ah… that’s a new world record”😅. It didn’t sound like humblebrag, it sounded like you were coming back from another dimension hehe! Congrats!!
Ya, I was really confused... I probaby should have known better, but I had recently switched over to In Game Time on my timer, and I did make a few small errors and I was convinced they were much worse then they actually were. It was like I crossed the finishline balancing on one tire.
In level 8, at 6:36, you can save another 30 secs, by aiming to jump across from the edge, catch the other corner, and then leave shift to catch the below ledge. This is far more smoother.
Thanks for the advice. There is actually a brand new strat for this level that skips most of the level ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TTg9DwFRzlM.html
I think you could beat it... You have to remember that with Prince of Persia, the progression happens in the player not in the game. You get better at the game. The game does not get easier to beat.
So we know the Princess is the only daughter of the Sultan. We also know that she is not married. That makes the prince himself possibly a foreign suitor. He could be from anywhere. Most likely a viking prince, since they traveled far and wide and their presence in Persian territory was nearly constant. Viking soldiers were some of the most elite soldiers in Persian armies. That would also explain the prince's blond hair. Alternatively, could be Kievan Rus prince, or some pre-viking scandinavian prince.
A very large percentage of that area was white/caucasian, Macedonia being a perfect example. Same with Syria. The reason the demographics became darker was due to Arab Muslim infiltration from further east. They even changed the name from Persia to Iran when white Christians became the minority after Muslim invasion, the same as Constantinople in Turkey.
Do you know the "math" behind being knocked through the closed gate at 10:13 on level 9? Is it the hit and the right movement timing that does it? I can pass through that same gate in a different way, exploiting that a horizontal displacement of his center of mass occurs when his sword is put away, but this is faster. The same trick must be possible to use elsewhere...
I don't know the Math but some members of the pop community do. This is actually a rather old run. We have discovered many new and exciting exploits. One of which actually allows you to skip most of level 8. You should check out the latest run.
I'm surprised that somehow in my childhood I've achieved beating the game and writing my nickname in the scoreboard taking in account that I'm absolutely stupid at gaming.
Always felt the fat guard was tougher than Jaffar, also when the fat guard dies, his body's position is different compared to the other guards and Jaffar
@@TimothyMakin If I remember correctly, when he dies, he lies on his back and his head faces the viewer instead of the body lying sideways like the other guards
I got into this in 2020 and managed to finish the game in about 15 min and 30 sec [ish]. There was a few tricks I couldn't manage. I couldn't do the 10th stage shortcut when you jump into that pit and reapear few screens to the right / up. Also I had tons of problems getting through that level 5 shortcut. I couldn't get it to work. I also couldn't jump passed any guard but the first two so I went around them which takes a sec more per guard aprox. Also - I never was able to figure out how to go straight through the level 7 chompers. There's a trick btw to make them jam, but I couldn't do it. And also there's an amazing shortcut on level 9 that will save you extra time but I couldn't pull it off. Like the last guard can send you through that last door. The rest I was able to figure out and it was pretty awesome :D Also - I think I've seen some new insane tricks not too long ago, but I can't remember. I think it had to do with shortening the level 8..... ow man I forgot :((
Ya, we got a friend of ours on the Prince of Persia speedrunning discord to figure out that level 8 trick. You should really rechord and submit a run if you are able to do sub 20! You should join the prince of Persia speedrunning discord.
@@TimothyMakin Yeah I wanted to do it but I was too lazy to be honest. I'd have to install a screen capture app etc. Under 20 min is easy. It's those minutes below that are really hard to chop away. Also I didn't really consider my gameplay that interesting to upload as it didn't really stand out in any way. I had a pretty good start to level 7 figured out but nothing special.
@@TimothyMakin Also : I had real problems jumping pass the guards. Like I only managed to jump pass the first two and even that took me like 10 to 15 takes... and it's really time consuming to get everything right so eventually I just kind of gave up :D I have to say though' it was a lot of fun. I installed the game in march 2020 during the quaranteene and then I just played it for like 2 months and got my time down to about 30 minutes. I initially played like "no lives lost" kind of thing but then I saw a speedrun and I was like WTF.... :o O.o it blew my mind and of course I had to try and learn and it took about a month to figure most of the things out, however I had a lot of problems with some of the shortcuts and specially Level 5 beginning gave me so many problems.
Jordan Mechner. He actually published his Journals during the making of pop1 and pop2. I was also lucky enought to get mentioned in the back of that book.
There is an Amiga leaderboard I am actually higher up on that one 3rd place. Both games play *almost* exactly the same. There are a few strange color limitations of the Amiga version.
I remember the first time I watched a pop speedrun and was amazed at all the guard jumping. I had played so much of the game as a kid that I knew it wasn't impossible.
That is how this all started for me. I remember beating it as a kid and thought "can I beat it again now that I'm older?" It took me two weeks of playing two hours a night to beat it the first time again.... but I beat it again that same night. Then I tried to do it faster.... eventualy I was getting very very fast runs. Honestly, you could do it too if you have the time to put into it.
The Prince of Persia game is really difficult. We want to go out the door and find a sword to fight the enemy in order to save the princess trapped in the palace and also forced to marry by the head of the king.
As with any thing it is only hard because you don't know stuff. Specifically, you don't know the route the prince has to take and you don't know the controls. The route can be studied, but the controls need to be practiced. Honesty, I feel that any one can beat the game in two weeks two hours a day. And anyone who has beaten the game can immediately beat it again.
Heh when I was a kid I had this game on Amstrad CPC clone (Schneider), on 3 inch floppy. I remember I was able to glitch it into repeating first level over and over, and I would just go right, jump over first guard, go to next level. Fastest speedrun ever but I don't think it counts, lol. Also: it was so much easier to jump over guards in that version.
I haven't played that verson yet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TQpbCCUquFY.html it doesn't look like anyone has attempted to speedrun this version.... Maybe you could submit a run and get a WR?... before I get that idea.
Question: Why does the timer stop at 14:04 when there still seems to be control and gameplay? The video in the lower-right seems to continue the timer where the current game has stopped. Where is the Time!-spot supposed to be?
We have an autospliter. The in game time stops when Jaffar dies. The real time continues till the last moment. Our speedruns are based on the in game time not the real time because the in game time ignores things like loading between screens.
I had recently switched from a real time autospliter(the one in the replay) to an in game time autospliter. That's why I am so confused at the end. I didn't realise I was doing as good because I was still used to the old numbers from my previous autospliter.
Or is this another version? Even in the second enemy you escape by just jumping and when he draw the sword I can't move forward to the enemy he will just stop
The first jumping through the guard trick is insanely hard, I can only do it like 1 time out of 50. Even when I go through the guard without being stabbed frontally, he gets me after I went through him most times.
It's all about were you are prior to jumping into the room. I actually have another video on my channel that explains it.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cHTJe-MeAdQ.html
@@TimothyMakin Thanks, I'll watch it. I'll have to practice some others too, at least the level 4 and 7 ones are already mastered by me (well, sort of 😅)
How do you run past the enemies without fighting them? I played this game and I thought it was forced for you to fight enemies? Is it a glitch? Just remember this game being really difficult
The game is difficult, although probably not more difficult then most Retro games from it's time. Three things make this game rather fun to speedrun: one once you know the layout of the levels it becomes trivial to navigate the levels, Two the game is low frames per second(12 out of combat and 10 in combat), Three there is few moments of RNG(Although the moments remaining are emancely frustrating). Jumping guards is usualy frame perfect.... although the lower frame rate helps. Also you don't have to worry about subpixels. I do believe that there are some versions of the game where you Have to fight the enemies... In the DOS version you can jump past them(Considered a glitch by the comunity) or you can advance past them put away your sword and run away(not considered a glitch.)
Jumping guards is considered a glitch... although I only view it as very very hard. but switching sides and running aways isn't considered a glitch.... just perhaps cowardly :)
