Former Secret Service agent describes JFK assassination in new detail 

The one thing we can take away from this is that a lot of law enforcement officials destroyed this murder investigation.

I count FIVE shots. One MISS, which caused concrete fragments to hit James Tague, one THROAT shot through the front windshield, one BACK shot which did not penetrate, a shot that hit Connelly and caused all of the damage to his body, and of course the Kennedy Head shot, which I believe originated from the front. That's five shots and that means that a conspiracy was in play that day.

It wasn't an Assassination, it was a Coup.

Something doesn't smell right here...Landis was a trained Secret Service agent who knew better than to sheepishly slip such important evidence on to a stretcher...He would have given it to his supervisor and explained where he found it...I not only find this totally unbelievable but also find his saying he never heard or saw anything about the assassination or that bullet over the last 60 years to be laughable...Landis could have been charged with obstructing the investigation and failing to perform his duties and suffered serious consequences, so it just isn't believable that he would handle such evidence that way or no one would see him dropping that bullet on the stretcher...What rotten journalism the NBC host practices by failing to register that once Landis disproves the Magic Bullet that therefore Landis' claim that the 3 shells prove Oswald did it is invalid because the scenario now requires a 4th bullet...

The Secret Service was probably part of the conspiracy that day. When the motorcade left Love Field, one of their men was ordered off the back of JFK's limo. He can be seen, in a video, raising his arms in consternation about the unexplained decision to remove him from the standing post on the rear bumper. Also, there were supposed to be motorcycle cops riding alongside JFK on both sides of the limo,, as part of his protection. When questioned about why those officers weren't there, some Secret Service guy said JFK had asked those officers not be there so people would have a better chance to see him. But the Secret Service later admitted that JFK's attitude toward their protection strategies was always to agree with whatever security formation they wanted. So they were lying.

if you want to stop crime scene tampering why do you remove a bullet from the car and then surreptitiously put it on a stretcher without explanation. maybe it's true, and maybe he didn't have a bad intention. But bad decision.

My spiddy senses are tingling listening to this guy. Lets see if I got this right, he takes it upon himself to tamper with evidence at a crime scene (the bullet). He says he's concerned about the safety of the bullet (getting lost) yet he leaves it on the presidents gurney unattended and doesn't report to anybody what he did?!? And what's up with the cigarette lighter he also removes from the crime scene, finder's keepers?!? Nope, something is not right with this guy in my humble opinion.

This story just does not add up: a Secret Service Agent with a bullet with rifling marks does not responsibly hold on to the bullet and turn it in to proper chain of command authority? Anyone with training in police work would know the rifling (striping?) would most definitely tie the bullet to whatever gun fired it. An essential piece of evidence that should have been tagged and identified with the time and location where it was found and the name of the person who found it and turned it in. Better yet, the bullet should have been left where it was located on the limousine, for fingerprinting, (and today DNA testing), as well as ballistic trajectory analysis. Of course in 1963, he did not have a mobile phone to call for backup to cordon off the limousine from the surging crowd at Parkland Hospital, so maybe it makes sense that he would pick up belongings and evidence that might otherwise have disappeared. Furthermore, the bullet as seen in the Exhibit photo does not in any way appear deformed from impact, . . . which raises all kinds of questions. And then, why did Agent Landis not pick up the “2 bright brass bullet fragments” (8:59) “on the seat,” "one of them, like my pinky finger, it was kind of mushroomed", . . . IN ADDITION to the "intact, . . . fully . . ., bullet," (9:14) seen "where the cushioning met the trunk of the car" that he did pick up, put in his pocket, and later placed on the gurney? So, according to this eyewitness, there were at least 2 bullets, which the NBC moderator did not acknowledge. Like everything in the minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years that followed, the Kennedy Assassination was a whirlwind of confusion, cacophony, and unreliable investigation.

This man's statement that he believes it was Oswald, acting alone, could simply be fear. In the weeks after the assassination, people in Dallas became aware that some of those who had a piece of information that contradicted the official story of it being the "lone nut" Oswald were being found dead, their deaths poorly staged as suicides, but looking like murders in reality. In the next 15 years, many people who knew things about the assassination that didn't go along with the government's version died under "mysterious" circumstances. It's possible that he waited all these years to tell his story for the same reason.

It could not be possible for the bullet to make a hole in Kennedy's back and then fall back to that location with no evidence of any material on it. If it actually was there and Pauls story is true then it would make more sense for it to be a plant by someone else who wanted a bullet with the Carcano marks on it to be found. Maybe Clint put it there? :)

Too much evidence was lost, destroyed, and ignored in this case for me to accept the official explanation. This just adds another layer of confusion.

You can not be serious ... At 16:15 Landis says "I saw a bullet and wanted to preserve it, and make sure it did not get lost." So what does he do ?? He just lays it on a stretcher without telling a soul, having no clue who might find it, and leaves. HEY - how about giving it to Roy Kellerman the Secret Service Agent in charge that day and then showing him EXACTLY where you found it ?? Then he keeps silent about it for 60 years, even though it ends up being (somehow) found on Connolly's stretcher. I 100% believe Clint Hill, who not only was the most attuned person in Dealey Plaza that day, but has been the most honest, transparent, reliable and haunted witness since Nov. 22, 1963. Clint Hill wrote a very good books about 10 years ago in which he contacted EVERY Secret Service agent on the JFK detail asking for their accounts and recollections but Landis says he was never even contacted. BS. Then Landis makes the even more ludicrous claim that he merely found the bullet QUOTE "just lying where the seam on the back seat meets the middle of the trunk, and it's uhh where they would have attached the bubbletop." So that is on TOP of the back seat. So now JFK researchers who question that the spent "magic bullet" had been likely to have fallen out of Connolly's wrist and ended up on his stretcher - is going to instead try to imagine this same bullet (not pristine in any way to begin with, base is completely oval) went IN Kennedy's back but then just fell out BEHIND him. And what convenient timing for this new money-maker of a Book --- 2 months before the 60th anniversary of that horrible day.

I don't know about you but I would love to see a professional marksmen replicate the shot from room, floor, vehicle, speed and even weather.

It also shocks me that so many involved have never read the Warren Commision Report, or studied any information available.

I was born in 1965 two years after his assination, in 1984 my History class all believed that there was a CIA cover up.

I am writing this from memory, without referring to any books on the assassination. It has long been thought that the pristine bullet either worked its way out of the president's back when the doctors in the trauma room were trying to save the president's life, or else it was placed on the stretcher by somebody (which led to theories that the bullet was planted in order to frame Oswald). My recollection is that witnesses said it was found on Kennedy's stretcher and not Connally's stretcher, which has always been one of the difficulties with the single bullet theory, the other being, of course, that a nearly pristine bullet could not have done all that damage to two bodies. One of the doctors at Parkland Hospital probed with his finger the wound in Kennedy's back and found it to be only three inches deep, which suggests that the bullet struck him at a low velocity. If I recall correctly, this was a not uncommon defect with a Mannlicher Carcano rifle. Given the Secret Service agent's account of where he found the bullet, this all makes sense. And it is consistent with the long standing criticism that Kennedy's throat wound could not have been caused by the same bullet that entered his back because: (1) the throat wound was several inches higher than the back wound; (2) the president was sitting upright when he was struck in the throat as the Zapruder film clearly shows; and (3) the back wound was not a through wound. The conclusion is almost inescapable that the throat wound was caused by a bullet fired from the front. Its dimensions have never been described because it was obliterated by the tracheotomy, so it was never identified as an entrance wound or an exit wound. This leaves us with five bullets: one that missed the limousine altogether, one that struck Kennedy in the back, one that struck Kennedy in the throat, one that did all the damage to Connally, and one that hit Kennedy in the head. Some of the witnesses said they heard three shots, others said they heard four or five. Given the rapid sequence of the shots, the echoes in Dealey Plaza, and the differing locations of the witnesses, it is no wonder that accounts differ. In defense of the Secret Service agent, he was wise to protect the evidence without turning it over to the Dallas police. Granted, it would have been better if the bullet could have remained where it was found until the car was photographed as a crime scene, but it was not in his power to make that happen. From Landis’ Official Report Submitted on November 27, 1963: As the Motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository (TSBD) “None of the windows were open, and I did not see anyone standing by them.” [Numerous windows were open and people were visible in many of them.] “The President's car and the Follow-up car had just completed their turns and both were straightening out [on Elm Street].” “At this moment I heard what sounded like the report of a high-powered rifle from behind me, over my right shoulder. When I heard the sound there was no question in my mind what it was.” [Surely the Warren Commission would want to hear every word Landis had to say.] “I did not realize that President Kennedy had been shot at this point.” “It was at this moment that I heard a second report and saw the President's head split open and pieces of flesh and blood flying through the air.” “President slumped out of sight towards Mrs. Kennedy.” “My reaction at this time was that the shot came from somewhere towards the front, right-hand side of the road.” [That area would include the Triple Underpass and the Grassy Knoll. The Warren Commission immediately lost interest in Landis because they did not want to hear a single word about a shot coming from the front or the right.] “I did not notice anyone on the overpass, and I scanned the area to the right of and below the overpass where the terrain sloped towards the road on which we were traveling.” [Landis did not look to the TSBD following the head shot, he looked to the Grassy Knoll.] “I do not recall hearing a third shot.” When the Motorcade arrived at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Landis said “Mrs. Kennedy's purse and hat and a cigarette lighter were on the back seat. I picked these three items up as I walked through the car and followed Mrs. Kennedy into the hospital.” A purse! A hat!! A cigarette lighter!!! Not one word about a pristine bullet!!!! Not one word about bullet fragments!!!!! Not one word about placing the pristine bullet on President Kennedy’s gurney!!!!!! Landis’ 60th Anniversary memory improvement is too little, too late, and unbelievable!!!!!!!

I am hard pressed to imagine how a bullet fired from a gun could possibly come to a stop without deformation. I have enough familiarity with ballistics to realize that really cannot happen. A bullet hitting a down ski jacket will deform. The velocity is just so great and the bullet is designed to deform. Thats why its made of lead. (The guy said brass but he was mistaken - bullets are lead with copper jackets) I don’t bring this up to cast doubt on this guys story but rather to just clarify the fact that bullets don’t just stop without deforming. And they deform a lot. So assuming this story is truthful - what could that tell us?

One of the most important principals of police work is continuity of evidence. From the time it is first secured, it must be documented to whom it is transferred every time it is transferred.

I thought the Secret Service was smarter than this, I was wrong. 😮 He kept this to himself all these years and now he wants to sell a book. That's some integrity there.

Question not asked: Why did Landis believe he needed to tamper with (i.e., move and deposit elsewhere) such critically important evidence? Did he believe it would disappear if he left it where he first observed it? If so, why did he believe that? If not, Landis’ actions and statements demonstrate extremely shoddy safeguarding of crime scene evidence. Negligence and mishandling of evidence to that extent is more consistent with 1863 than 1963. Second question not asked: Why did Landis transplant the intact bullet but not the fragment? Mr. Landis, you condemned yourself with your own words. If what you say is true you have committed a great disservice to your oath, your agency and your country!

Anyone with a microscope and had grade 5 chemistry could clearly tell if there was more then 1 gun man...the rifling on the bullet doesnt lie

I agree. It doesn't make any sense he would put the bullet on the gurney. I can see why he'd want to pick it up to make sure someone didn't take it with all the melee going on but, why wouldn't he show it to other SS agents, or the police or some other authority? Why did he stay silent? Maybe he was told by the CIA to keep his mouth shut... who knows.

I don't understand why he didn't immediately turn that bullet over to his supervisor. What he did was actually tampering with evidence., Many years ago I saw a program on tv about the claim that witnesses had heard a fourth shot. A cereal company had put a recording on the back of a cereal box. It was an actual 45 recording taken from a motorcycle police radio that had been left open. (I remember seeing this when I was a kid) It's believed to have recorded a fourth shot. I personally will take anything this guy says with a big grain of salt. He tampered with evidence. He should have known better.

I'm sorry for being so graphic, I don't buy the one shooter theory. I'm an experienced hunter and I've never seen an animals organs or tissues blow backwards when it was shot. The President's brain, if shot from the rear, would have splattered all over Governor Connally and his wife, not all over the rear of the limo. Mrs. Kennedy was seen and has stated that she crawled up on the rear of the limo to retrieve pieces of her husbands' brain. That shot had to have been from the front, thus proving there were at least two shooters. The bullet that was found by the Presidents' side, if it had been any of the bullets that struck either The President or governor Connally would have been deformed by the impact, which is what bullets are designed to do. I'm sorry, but the evidence screams conspiracy/cover-up.

It was the president, but what a horrible event for any who were involved. To witness the utter violence of seeing any human being being shot, especially a head wound like that, never leaves you, never. You will see it for the rest of your life. May that man have peace. There is probably not a day that goes by that he doesnt think of it. Things like that never leave your mind, never.

This doesn't seem credible. A trained secret service agent, with important crime scene evidence but doesn't even inform his superiors, really? However, I always thought the stretcher bullet came from Kennedy's back, and this confirms it. Also, in the interview he says 'I heard the first shot, then a second shot closely followed by a third'. Why doesn't the interviewer ask how close together were 2nd and 3rd shots? This is absolutely crucial to the case. If the shots were very close together - some witnesses said they were almost on top of each other - then there had to be two shooters, because it's impossible to reload and fire that quickly. Two shooters equals conspiracy...

A normal secret service guy does not leave a bullet anywhere. He places it in a bag and gives it to the police for example.

The story I heard, and that makes the most sense (to me), is the two-shooter theory: Oswald plus a very hungover secret service guy. The secret service guy, reacting to Oswald’s shots, ACCIDENTALLY shot Kennedy. The guy apparently became a hopeless alcoholic as a result. SEE: “Mortal Error: The Shot That Killed Kennedy” by Bonar Menninger.

Somehow Oliver Stone knew all about this 33 years ago.

It's understandable as to why Landis had fear regarding his action/ account. Everyone who posed a possible serious challenge to the narrative (for quite some time), ended up dead.

This makes no sense..he would have been trained to report evidence where found ...US Secret Service is very strict in their training and was even then...

I would like to see if he was interviewed by the Assassination Records Review Board in the 1990's and what was recorded? The fact that the "Super" Secret Service when instructed by the ARRB not to destroy records did in fact destroy records speaks volumes about what they were hiding. Also the fact that the two Naval doctors at the Bethesda autopsy never performed a gunshot autopsy, then burned or lost their original autopsy reports is troubling. These doctors reported the back wound was shallow with no projectile found, yet world renown pathologist, Dr. Cyril Wecht states bullets do not "back out" of wounds. And add in the fact that in the Warren commission final report, then Congressman Gerald Ford moved the back wound up several inches to fit the single bullet theory. Now add this into the narrative is to muddy up the waters further while President Biden refused to release the remaining Assassination Records. Imagine that?

First, thanks S/A Landis for your service to our country. Second, some time before he died in 1997, didn't S/A Sam Kinney state that it was he who put the bullet on the gurney? Does this mean that two bullets were found and left (without tagging as evidence) on two different gurneys, or are two agents taking credit for the same act? The upcoming book may be an interesting read, but I'm curious as to who funded the project. Which companies contributed? And of course, at 4:23, if a bullet rolled from JFK's gurney to Gov. Connally's, without hitting the floor, then it truly was a magic bullet indeed.

Hmmm, seems pretty strange. What about HIS fingerprints on this bullet? The only other remote explanation is this might have been the 3rd bullet no one could find from 3 shots. However, for a highly-trained secret service agent to tamper with evidence and then remain silent just doesn't add up.

There was a hole in the windshield of the limo. This is probably the bullet that came from the other direction. It explains a lot.

If he's convinced that there were only 3 shots because of the 3 shells on the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository.... then let's count the shots. 1) the one in his back that they says is this pristine bullet that fell out onto the rear seat 2) the one that hit JFK in the neck (although there was no bullet hole in back of his neck)that then did acrobatics hitting Connelly in his back breaking a rib n then his wrist n ending up in his leg 3) the head shot that exploded JFK'S head... so there's the 3 shots... but.. what about the shot that missed the car and hit the curb in between Main n Commerce that struck Mr Teage in the cheek... that would be 4 shots. By the Zapuder film there would not have been enough time for one shooter to fire 4 shots ... hmm.

So let me get this straight, a trained Secret Service person found evidence in the back of JFK's car and took that evidence and put it on the gurney of of JFK and didn't publicly talk about it for 60 years? Absolutely amazing to bring this up on the 60th year anniversary and wrote a book. What a coincidence. "No one asked me about it" ridiculous. He's trying to sell a book and make some money.

How much stock should we put into the memory of someone in their 80s from an event that took place 60 years ago? Most people his age can not remember what they did the pervious week.

UPDATE: In a separate solo interview James Robenalt further explains his belief that the Bullet was undercharged (he claims that was not uncommon for the Manlicher Carcano) and being undercharged did not have the energy to go through the president but instead lodged in Kennedy's back (sticking out) Jackie comforting the president may have snagged the bullet and possibly it fell onto the back deck when she crawled over the rear of the limo. Highly plausible explanation of how it got on the rear ledge and wasn't deformed as a fully charged bullet would have been. Still doesn't explain the two shiny fragments. Or Landis not securing the crime scene (his primary protectee was Jackie so he was solely focused on her) but he could have commandeered someone (DPD or even a civilian to guard the car - maybe) This rationale has elevated my initial impression of Robenalt.

If it wasn't for the motorcycle cops mike being left on, and the eyewitness that was struck by curb fragments, they would not have altered their 3 shot theory. They took an identical rifle, placed it in a vice, and tried to fire 4 shots without aiming and could not do it. The first photos taken in the book depository of the sniper's nest and gun found show the gun was a Mauser.

Big deal, he found one of the bullets that was shot. Magic bullet theory was debunked a decade ago.

I haven't watched this yet but i assume they are finally going to admit that the 3rd bullet was accidentally fired from an armourlite rifle in the secret service car travelling behind

There's a very simple explanation to this story. First, there's no way this is the bullet that struck Kennedy's head, and there's no way the one that went through his throat ended up falling on the seat immediately after leaving Kennedy's body. However, the most likely explanation is that it's the bullet that went through both men, and fell on the seat when they removed Connally's injured body from the vehicle. The jump seat was right there close to Kennedy's seat. BTW - the term "magic bullet" was coined before it was generally known that the jump seat was inboard of where Kennedy was sitting... Initially it was believed that Connally sat exactly in front of Kennedy, making it such that the bullet would have had to turn a corner to enter Connally's body. But he was not sitting precisely in front of Kennedy - he was slightly inboard from him.

Those secret service people have a lot to account for ... where were they? ... even the Secret Service detail were perplexed by the absence of surround officers ... they weren't there ... even one of them only 3 minutes before had his hands in the air as if to say what is going on ??? You tell me ... a secret service detail who were conveniently absent at the time of impact !!!

The one thing he said that I truly believe is that he couldn't look at the President's head or he would have passed out.

What is in the back of every researcher's mind into the Kennedy Assination is that if Paul Landis' account is 100% accurate, it brings up the annoying possible explanation that the bullet had been already discreetly placed there to embelish the story of a lone assasin, before Kennedy was even in the limosine and in the motorcade. It was planted there before the assasination.

I wonder if Landis would care to speculate what sort of calibre round would be fired at a distance of 60-100 yards and yet would only have the power or force to penetrate about an inch of flesh in Kennedy’s back and then fall in to the back seat in a pristine condition. This man is mistaken.

At 9:00 minutes in he says he found "bullet fragments". One was the size of the end of his pinky and mushroomed and he doesn't mention the other of the "two shiny fragments". THEN he found the intact bullet above the seat. Those fragments were forensic evidence. I have never heard that any fragments were found in the limo, and I have written a movie and an upcoming book on this. The limo was a crime scene. Today we know of CSI or CSU, but homicide detectives for decades preserved, photographed, and documented things like fragments and blood splatter as important in determining the direction of a bullet. The direction of the bullet is at the center of the whole 60 years of conspiracy madness. I find it hard to believe that SS agents were not, at minimum, aware of crime scene procedure. There are eyewitness accounts of them scrubbing down the back seat right outside Parkland Hospital. Destroying blood splatter forensics. Also if the bullet was on the back ledge of the limo, then it never entered the limo. (Although a sub-sonic bullet, meeting any object would have either dug in or bounced off, Kennedy had a back brace. Maybe the bullet glanced off that,) but the kinetic energy of a projectile traveling like a bullet pushes the bounds of physics to suggest that it just stopped cold and fell onto the open rear deck of the limo which had just sped down the Stemmons Freeway at 80-90 miles an hour taking turns and stopping with a lurch. For these and a few other reasons, to my way of thinking, this does not line up with reality. - Tom Avitabile, author of Ask Not!

Six Seconds in Dallas... my campus of the University of Toronto had a copy of that, and I had it almost constantly signed out from late 1987 to early 1991... Eventually I found my own copy of it.

He should of come out with this information years ago. Waiting this long is a terrible mistake as he could of put an end to the whole lone gunman BS.

Totally unrelated: I was once in a a very large field at a firing range. I found a "pristine" bullet on the ground that someone shot and it just ran out of steam. The shooter (maybe Oswald ) may have used old ammo that just plain quit on that one shell???? I have always thought that 2 shooters were involved. An important mission could not be left to one alone??? From the beginning the pieces never fit!!

What about the head shot? You think Lee Harvey Oswald took that shot too? It doesn't make any sense.

In subsequent ballistics tests, a bullet passing through similar tissue as was the path from the right rear shoulder/ upper back of JFK and out his throat, bullets did not deform (of the same caliber as the carbine used by Oswald).

I believe him. He disclosed this once before but it did not get picked up in the media. It makes more sense than the magic bullet theory. But it's strange that he wouldn't say anything about it to his colleagues.

It makes absolutely no sense that a secret service agent would pick up a bullet and pick it up and put in his pocket....without turning it over to Dallas Police. That bullet was part of a crime scene. Putting it on a gurney was just stupid. Anything could have happened to it. Also, shortly after the president was brought in to parkland, someone was dispatched to clean up the back seat of the limousine with a rag and a mop of water. This is madness! That was a crime scene. The location of blood and brain tells a lot about bullet trajectories.

What kind of investigation is it if after the Presidents car pulls up at Parkland hospital and finally getting everyone out of the car but then dont put up police crime scene tape up around the car to keep people away from it so investigators can come in to check the car for any evidence of blood , brain matter , skull bone , bullet fragments , whole bullets , or for any bullet holes anywhere in or on the car or through the windshield? You dont preserve a bullet trying to make sure it doesnt get lost by removing it fom a crime scene with your own fingers and hand that doesnt even have a protective crime scene gloves on it. Smh
