Ryan Cleckner served in the U.S. Army's elite 1st Ranger Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, where he attended the Special Operations Indterdication Course, the Primary Leadership Development Course, and the French Alpine Mountaineering Course of which he was in the first group of Americans to ever graduate.
After serving for two combat deployments in Afghanistan, Cleckner works as a firearms attorney and owner of GunUniversity.com where he and his team educate readers about firearm use, reviews of products, as well as legal topics like CCW insurance - gununiversity.com/concealed-carry-insurance/.
Today, Cleckner will be analyzing four well-known movies with action-packed shooting scenes to give Thomas Insights readers the inside scoop on whether real-life snipers look just like they do in Hollywood, ultimately giving each a rating out of 10. Movies Cleckner rates include:
- American Sniper (2014)
- Enemy at the Gates (2001)
- Clear and Present Danger (1994)
- Heat (1995)
Spoiler Alert: he didn't hold back.

One of my favorite lines is from "Clear and Present Danger." Raymond Cruz (The Closer, Major Crimes) is the cadet who keeps ringing the target near the judges. He finally gets enough shots to pass and they ask him to stand up. He is inside 25 yards. "How did you get so close?" "Sir, by being a sneaky bastard, Sir!"

I need to watch HEAT again, it's been 20+ yrs since I've watched it and it was a great movie. I don't believe I saw Enemy At The Gates before so I need to.

Andy McNab, S.A.S. trained the actors for Heat, hence the realism.

In Heat, they used actual blanks so they could get the reflection of sound off the buildings.

Yes indeed Ryan. One of those scenes that make us feel embarrassed or embarrassed for Hollywood. Enemy at the Gates was also my favorite Sniper movie along with the infamous 'Lady Death' ( a Soviet Ukrainian incidentally)

Yeah, very cool indeed. Thanks for the insight from a true warrior. I especially love it when Hollywood gets torn up,... but that's just me.

"That;s an AR-15 with iron sights". Val starts shooting full auto. Umm... no it isn't? Unless its been modified, but I don't think you can tell that from there...

HEAT firefight was so good because they had a military advisor from the SAS. I believe it was the author of Bravo Two Zero, Andy McNabb.
