Former Taiwan president Lee Teng-Hui has died at the age of 97 in Taipei. He was Taiwan's first popularly-elected president after more than four decades of authoritarian rule. Mr Lee had been in hospital for months. In the last years of his life, he was better known as a mentor to Taiwan's first female president Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.

@@odebla2015 Traitor? He brought to Taiwan democracy with no violence or blood. The same democracy that Sun-Yat-Sen wished for China when founding the ROC in 1911. The only traitors to their own kind and to the memory of Sun were the PRC when they wanted to end the ROC democracy in 1996 with the Third Taiwan Strait crisis by sending missiles and torpedoes. Here are your traitors!

@@AMTFan1 He was a traitor of the highest order. He sold out his kind to the Japanese, by changing his name and joining the Japanese Imperial army. He denied the Nanjing massacre and the comfort women issue. He visited the Yasuki shrine several times where war criminals are buried. He refuses to cede the Diayou Islands to its owners, the Chinese. He thinks they belong to Japan! I don't care if he brought democracy. Democracy is a demonstrably shitty system. Even the worst men that ever walked the earth never shat on their ancestors in that manner. Hitler never forgot he was Austrian. Mussolini never forgot he was Italian. Hideki Tojo never forgot he was Japanese. Lee Teng Hui forgot he was Chinese and that's unacceptable. Sun Yat-Sen had a vision for China, but his party lost. The KMT lost, and they have to accept that they don't represent China anymore. I'm an overseas Sino from the African region, and I will tell you straight in your face, you Taiwanese, Hong Kong protesters and other white worshippers and collaborators of the criminal USA: I will not forget your treachery and racism towards Chinese people and your attempt to stop the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We here in Africa stand by China. You first world former slave owners and imperialist collaborators will get what's coming to you. Expect us. PS: And as for Tsai Ing-Wen, she's sullying the Hakka name. She's another traitor to her own kind.

@@MrBoliao98 Martial Law is lifted in 1987 which was initiated By Chiang Ching Kuo. so what fact are you talking about? On what ground does Lee Teng Hui have to reinstate Martial Law? Taiwan is a developing country due to the 10 Major Construction Project which make Taiwan a stable country without any risk of major conflict. He won't and cannot reinstate Martial Law. Chiang Ching Kuo handpicked Lee Teng Hui as the next Presidential candidate which will be elected by the National Assembly. So who picked his own son?

@@hilo4110 he had the choice of continuing a KMT one party state and not allow elections, he did it in 1996. He could have allowed people like Hao Bo Cun to continue with the militarism that was Taiwan, he did not. And what are you, a bum there condemning a dead man and belittling what most would never achieve in a lifetime.

@@MrBoliao98 Since when ROC do not have election? Didn't their National Assembly and Legislative Yuan host a supplementary election once the term ends? Chiang Ching Kuo is the person who allow voices from the alternative. National Assembly and Legislative Yuan have the members of other approved Parties and the Tangwai member which mostly compromise of DPP member. DPP are able to host meeting or give speeches under Chiang Ching Kuo administration, even it is against the law for not being a approved Party. This action indirectly gave the chance for the Wild Lily student movement to happen, which lead to the 1996 election you are talking about. ROC never had militarism, maybe during Chiang Kai Shek time there is, because of unifying if China. But during Chiang Ching Kuo time, there is no militarism in ROC anymore. So where is the not continuing with militarism?? Lee Kuan Yew didn't put his son as Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong was elected by the parliament. It is never wrong for a son to follow their father's foot step. Lee Teng Hui's son did not and was not interested in politics, if not he might be a top ranked politician in Taiwan too. I am just stating the fact. Stating fact = belittling Lee Teng Hui? So are you belittling Chiang Ching Kuo now too?? Correcting you doesn't mean that I am condemning Lee Teng Hui. I am just correcting your wrong "fact" by telling you the history. Please stop talking about democracy with such a extreme mindset, different viewpoint from you means that I am a bum?

Let us indeed hail Lee Teng-Hui who helped Taiwan make that smooth, peaceful transition from an authoritarian to a pluralistic, democratic nation. Indeed, the late Chiang Ching-Kuo was very precise when he handpicked Lee as his successor. Amidst the odds that Taiwan faced during his term--most notably threats from China--Lee will always be remembered for his unbique brand of diplomact that has helped raise the profile--as well as respect--of Taiwan even among countries that do not have diplomatic ties with Taipei. An extraodrinary leader and statesman indeed :-)

Taiwan is independent in every sense except formally. The United States and Taiwan are major trading partners, along with the European Union, Hong Kong, and even the CCP, themselves. But, I believe that the Republic of China will get the formal recognition they are long owed, soon. As I doubt the CCP can continue to run their government and treat their citizens the way they are for long.

@@besttiktokpranks180 No they won't, at least won't happen in this decade, US or EU will not fight for ROC and abandon the benefits from PRC. And just so you know, ROC's biggest trading partner is PRC, double the amount of US. The market value of ROC will never be comparable to PRC market value. No country in the right mind will support ROC to be independent unless PRC is agreeable to it. Also what did CCP did to their people? I see people in China leading a comfortable life, able to travel, see the world and even study aboard. China are experiencing their growth, only a small portion of Chinese will push for a change.
