Former USS Cowpens (CG-63) Departs San Diego for the Last Time. After more than 33 years of naval service, she was decommissioned at Naval Base San Diego on August 27. Seen here being towed out by USNS Grasp (T-ARS-51), with a destination of Pearl Harbor.

I feel real old. Ships that were new and cutting edge when I served are being decommissioned. I did a lot of ASW training on that class of ship in Pearl. From a Sonar Tech's pov, they were great. Roomy, all kinds of tech, armed to the teeth. Really impressive platforms. CIC was like walking into a Star Wars spaceship and Sonar Control was spacious. Lots of memories.

Yes very true.. i work at nasco ship yard san diego.. that ship was was about 74% redone inside.. never to be finished

The Cowpens was Pier side next to my ship the USS Boxer at 32nd Street often back in 95-99! Sad to see her go! But a long and commendable service life!❤❤❤❤❤

I was on the Coral Sea and I remember having to rig for tow during refresher training off the coast of San Diego. Towing a large warship all the way to Pearl harbor is a task! Go Navy!

The USS Cowpens' modernization has cost nearly $1 billion, but the work was never completed. The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser began its modernization in fiscal year 2015. In August 2018, GD NASSCO received a $147.6 million contract for work on the ship. In early 2024, the U.S. Navy ordered all further work on the USS Cowpens to stop and placed it on the decommissioning list. The Navy plans to decommission all of its guided missile cruisers by 2027 1 BILLION $$$ OF TAXPAYER MONEY BEING TOWED TO THE GRAVEYARD WITHOUT EVER MAKING IT OUT OF THE SHIPYARD. NOBODY WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

Thankfully, that ship is not the USS Cowpens! That ship has no missiles, large caliber guns, or long range search /guidance radars . The ship is an Auxilliary vessel, probablly Salvage or Rescue (USS Grasp (AR-51)assigned to what is known as the Military Sealift Command. The Blue & Gold stripes on the mast/smokestack reflect that assignment.. They also consist as oilers and supply ships as part of that organization.. They are not considered combatents typically and have mixed crews of civilians and active duty Navy people onboard.

Pearl Harbor according to the video description. EDIT: More specifically, the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility at Pearl Harbor, to which she will later become part of the Mothball Fleet.
