Yep... It *could* be improved to the first 42 minutes but the super early Mount Pajamaja route is practically TAS only, lol. Maybe one day we'll see it becoming the first 20 minutes... I don't have much hope, though, lol.

@@jefforjacksonwarren2108 Very simply put, if we do not do that, we have to get hit more than once against Capnaps as Luigi and it forces Mario to also get hit, as otherwise we do not die fast enough against Sandoons. Though, technically and optimally, the fastest strat is to not die at all, but... this game already has enough rng as is lol

It's funny that we can say we have nostalgia for this game... Game's almost 10 years old... Pretty crazy honestly lol. Sure doesn't feel like it. MLDT is awesome, though. Probably my favourite, too, with MLSS then MLBIS behind (I haven't played MLBIS in years whilst MLSS I've been playing constantly (There's a Randomizer for it now so I've poured at least a hundred hours into it since release lol (MLBIS randomizer is also being worked on (jamesbrq is goated (parenthesises (I swear I am childish sometimes but I don't care))))))

Jokes aside, pretty entertaining run. I have fond memories of this game but wasn’t really aware of any speedruns. Seeing how glitchy it can be has me wondering about just how fast you can beat this game. The game seems pretty glitchy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some crazy sequence break could end up happening cutting the time in half. An example being clipping into Sonnom Woods in early game Mushrise Park, or something.

There is a route in which you enter Mount Pajamaja much earlier than intended, which allows you to get Spin Jump early and also Walk through Walls which ultimately lets you speed up the rest of the game significantly, but unfortunately because of Somnom Woods we must return to Mount Pajamaja in order to learn the Luiginary Cone, and for that we must be able to collapse -- since we must also use Ground Pound, it is the fastest to enter Dreamy Wakeport (because it just gives us the abilities we are supposed to have by then for some reason... It's the only reason I enter the room in Dreamy Wakeport, lol), and this route would probably net you a 2:4x time, maybe even 2:3x, hard to say. This route however is extremely stupid because it requires 2 of the hardest clips that have ever been found, and one of the 2 must be done a second time so essentially we do 3 practically impossible clips, lol. Maybe one day someone will use the clips.

I've been doing it ever since I first got the game...lol, its fun. Especially Mushrise Park's theme works really well for jumping

@Pixiuchu when I first played I was like 8 and never fought any enimes, so I couldn't even beat the game because I was like level 10 at the mountain 😂 🤣

Version 1.0 and 1.1 is the same for speedrunning, the only difference being Gyrocontrols suck in 1.1, and random freezes are fixed too in 1.1 but in my 1500+ hours of playing this game of which most of those were on 1.0, I only ever got a single freeze, so honestly the risks are really low. So I use 1.0 lol And thanks, and yeah this game is pretty neat

The Homebrew application I use is called stepdit; links below. Setting it to 12007 was mostly random, usually I set it to 12580. But the reality is all we need is 10,000 and anything more than that does not affect the speedrun in any meaningful way. We set the steps because the Hiking Boots' max power is 150, which we get when we have 10,000 steps in a single day. Minimum power is 30. For reference, the strongest boots in this game are Challenge Boots and Coin Boots at 155 power, and then you have the Pro Boots which has a power of 90 I believe but lets you jump three times. So the Hiking Boots is extraordinaly powerful for speedruns, especially with it being so easily accessible... And for glitches, there are a few small backups most of them involving Walk through Walls. If you softlock with Walk through Walls (which becomes very easy to do when you're new at this game), you can enter a battle which resets your height and if there is no battle, then usually the only thing we can do is save the game and reload the game (which gets rid of Walk through Walls), which you can actually see demonstrated precisely at 2:54:16 , where I got Luigi too far down which made it impossible for me to change height, so the only thing I could do was save the game. In some cases it is preferable just to reload the game without saving, like if I mess up right after Pajamaja WtW (at 1:57:00 ), I would prefer to restart the game. Optimally we do not need the safety save, but I do it anyway because I tend to mess up the room at 1:58:44 far more than I would like to admit lol (like here where I entered the room from the bottom loading zone instead of the top one..... I didn't softlock, though, but it definitely cost me some precious seconds). And thanks! I agree on it being the best M&L game, lol, and yeah I am working on a tutorial right now! It'll probably be finished by the end of September, hopefully sooner, it's very hard to say lol. They are too far out of the way and they're not as good as you think. It says "Increases your striking power by 400% on your day of birth.", but this doesn't mean you deal 4x more damage, but rather the Boots power (for example) is now at 120 instead of 30. Hiking Boots has a Boots power of 150 so it's better than Birthday Boots. Birthday Hammer might be useful for Glitchless, though, you only need to revive 7 Pi'illos and I personally never considered Birthday Hammer for Glitchless until now. But it's just as likely to be useless since we don't have much use for Hammers besides sometimes countering. It would take maybe a minute to go get it after Dozing Sands. Might be useful. Definitely not for Any% since we don't revive nearly enough Pi'illos for it to be worth considering (3 in Any%). Might be useful for All Bosses since we do need all the power we can get against the X Bosses.

I did think about the fact that I did run into the Boomerang Bro in Somnom Woods after I had written that in the bottom comments, but that encounter is done on purpose for leveling up (Pi'illodium takes too long otherwise). It is my first ever run in which I did not get any unintended encounters, and my first run in which I got 0 flees in the stats. And thanks!

I don't know what stall city is, but... yeah... I never expected it to go so low when I first started lol (it was at 8:12:14 I believe, so effectively it is now 5 hours shorter)

Because we have not yet managed to find anything for the first hour that's useful. It being after the first hour is merely a coincidence lol. There IS a possible route in which you go to Mount Pajamaja after Dreamy Mario, therefore doing glitches at 44 minutes or so into the run, however this route is practically TAS only.

Actually no I don’t think it’s that difficult since people had the time to TAS the other Mario RPGs. Plus we can TAS 3ds games now.

@@davyjones3105 I would agree but unfortunately an optimal TAS for this game requires insane RNG manipulation to get as many secret boxes from Viruses as possible (secret boxes are incredibly powerful with the right RNG), so a TAS for this game especially with the limited tools Citra has would still be tedious and difficult (ignoring the fact the TAS only glitches would be a pain in the ass even in TAS)

It's currently the only "proper" tutorial, though one day (possibly once I have a better PC, might try to do stuff before then too) I want to make a better tutorial and also tutorials for other skips and tricks. The gist of it is that the cutscene is very useful because it doesn't disappear, doesn't take away WtW, WtO and WtA (Walk through Walls, Objects and Air, three states you can get from cutscenes), and it also brings Luigi together with Mario. It also happens to allow us to change height, and we can also save & quit in order to gain control in the cutscene and allow us to skip the cutscene where we wake up Big Massif, which we need later. Everything we do in Wakeport is with a purpose. Even randomly entering that one Dreamy Wakeport room and immediately going out... :) (the reason for that one is it happens to give us the dream world abilities we obtain in Glitchless, meaning we can now use Spring Jump, Ground Pound and we can get out of Luiginary Stack. Without it we wouldn't be able to finish Somnom Woods or get Luiginary Cone.)

You get 5 coins, at a timeloss of 1-2 seconds. For a total of 10 coins, at a timeloss of 2-4 seconds. We get everything we need without those 10 coins, there are faster ways of getting coins. In the end we don't need to buy any gear, only badges. Almost no gear is useful to us that we can buy, the best gear we can get are all in blocks or boss drops. Hiking Boots (block), extremely powerful. Fast to get. EXP Boots (block), pretty powerful, but also increases how much EXP we can get, which is ultimately very useful for the final boss. We need those EXP. Fighter Wear (shop), the only gear we actually buy. Gives us 20 POW, the only stat we care about. Snare Wear (block), gives us 30 POW and is extremely conveniently right next to Pi'illodium, taking no time to get. Anti-air Boots DX, very powerful and is dropped from Pi'illodium. It takes literally no time to get. Boost Wear, very powerful giving us 30 POW, and is dropped from Zeekeeper taking literally no time to get. The only things we buy besides Fighter Wear are a couple of badges for a total of 3100(?) coins, and we have faster ways of getting those coins. So... yeah. It's faster to just get the wrong answers.

For the Hiking Boots, having 10,000 steps in a single day boosts the Hiking Boots' powers. You could just do it legitimately and walk for like 2 hours before each run, but... It is a bit inconvenient to do so, lol. Actually the Hiking Boots used to be banned...

I'm pretty happy with the capture card, though there is another service too which might be cheaper and offers more options: delfinocustoms.com/ The only reason I chose to get a Japanese 3DS for the capture card is because it's a good excuse for me to buy a Japanese 3DS, and I wanted it purely for obtaining the Mario & Luigi Dream Team update 1.1 on the Japanese version, as I have never been able to find a .CIA file of the Japanese update anywhere online. I finally have the update, so woohoo! Hope these links help :)

There are 3 glitchless runs, possibly 4. On speedrun.com, you have Demolition's 10:15 and my 10:37ish time, and I believe DhrGR's first run was also glitchless, 13 hours. Popirea has done speedruns too that only uses Normal Mode, with a time of like 10:25ish iirc; it's on NicoNico or smth somewhere. Sub 10 is definitely possible, sub 9 definitely is not. I am planning to make a route for Glitchless this summer, though I won't run it until my capture card is fixed, whenever that will be. Once it is, a run under 10 hours will happen :) I think the fastest time possible would be around 9:40.

Probably *might* work for a 100% speed run but otherwise it takes to long

@@PixiuchuSCRACH WHAT I SAID I HAVE AN IDEA!!! Basically the down side of the miracle + gold badges is that it takes to long to charge, BUT with the risk + master badges you get a 50/50 chance of a free time stop that charges way faster!

You need to beat Mount Pajamaja and enter Driftwood Shore the glitchless way in order to use Miracle Badge, Gold Badge... What you see here in Any% is the best we have. Although they are still very powerful badges, in all honesty. Risk/Silver is crazy good (powers up everyone). Absolutely! I have a couple of categories I want to run eventually, Glitchless being one of them :) Though right now it is not possible for me to do a 10 hour long category in one sitting because of the fact that I have dogs I must put outside (always taking 20 minutes each time and 3 times a day means I lose an hour); this should change once 2023 rolls in, but I will very likely do a segmented run at some point where pausing is allowed.

yeah just that small quick trick took us 8 years to find, and it was found by someone who didn't know the implications of this trick (it saves 50ish minutes, allowing us to skip Driftwood Shore and Dreams Deep) and in fact was just sharing a "funny visual bug" as per his words. game has a funny history lol
