I am so stoked you made this video. Formosa Tea is easily a Top 5 game for me. Thanks for reviewing all the changes-- they all look really positive. I totally agree with you that more cards are needed! I hope they will also improve iconography and maybe put an icography guide and round summay on the back of the rulebook.
Thanks for doing this overview & comparison! As a big fan of tea, mid-weight Euros, and thematic integration, Formosa Tea looks right up my alley, but I had to pass on the first Kickstarter campaign for external reasons. Looks like I'll be well rewarded for my cowardice and greed! But seriously, all the changes they're making to the second edition look solid. This is an easy day-one back for me.
Loving your channel lately! Formally requesting a a how to play of mini citys because I am not following the English rules very well and there are no videos on RU-vid on how to play
Oh man,I love the first edition. I can start implementing some if these changes now while I hem and haw over if I should get the second edition! Great video Jay!
They can’t. If you saw my copy, an upgrade pack would touch almost every component, meaning they’d be upgrading nearly an entire game. Not financially viable for them to do an upgrade pack.
@@CardboardEast It's too bad. As much as I love this game, paying for the 2nd edition plus shipping is out of my price range. I'll continue to play our 1st edition for now.
@@josyuen4207 That’s fair. We all have tons of games to play. Out of curiosity (and not to be mean or snarky in any way), what would be an acceptable shipping cost?
@@CardboardEast, for me, I look at what percentage of the shipping is the price of the game. If the shipping is close to 50% the price of the game, then it makes the purchase that much harder to do. Anything greater than 50% is a definite no for me. Anything around 20% would probably be acceptable but I understand that not all companies can do this. Of course, it’s also depends on whether the game is good, whether the game is available at retail, whether there are any exclusives. So, the percentage is not a hard rule for me but it’s one of the starting points. 😊
Sure. Some minor differences could be done & I go over that in the video. Though the main difference is the new market cards. The reduction of points and the tying the special action to the cards is key to the second edition. You’d have to replace your entire deck. If an update kit is available, I think it would be a deck of cards and stickers. I play a lot of GMT games and they often use stickers for update kits. I don’t foresee the people who want an update kit for Formosa Tea being happy with stickers on their board.
@@CardboardEast I'll try to add the minor change to my first edition game, I have already printed your variant. I have to really thank you for your dedication on this game, cause is because of you I have looked everywhere to find a copy of the lost TMG edition here in Europe, when I found that it looked like I've found an unicorn.
@@andreaferraglio2025 😅 Apparently it’s the most requested game from TBD who have told me they often get requests for a copy. I’m not sure if that’s because of me. I’m just glad more and more people are discovering the game!
Wife: NOK when I’m feeling chill. FT when I’m feeling competitive. J: Formosa Tea hands down. I find the mechanisms at play to be far more fascinating and I love games where you can piggyback off the work of others.
This is initially, annoying news. I'm not sure how I can communicate my thoughts w/o sounding mean, whiny, or rude. It stinks feeling like my copy is "broken" and this second edition is "all fixed".
It's been five years, which is enough time to release a second edition. I don't think the 1st edition is broken by any means. My variant for 1st edition still works quite well. But I do think that doing a reprint of TBD's most requested game without doing any revisions would be the biggest mistake. Soso Studio has done "upgrade kits" before with Dadaocheng (although only for Taiwan). If they were to add a pledge level for that, it would have to be stickers and a deck of cards in a plastic bag as adding more to that would be too expensive to make it financially viable. I'm saddened to see that this isn't making the splash I wanted as it is a great version of the game.
