Hickery here . Hadn't watched this video yet but I started getting text & Instagram messages with concerns of Positive Covid test I received a day before I was going down to Charlotte and fly to Texas with Turk. It was a quick test,known for flaws but I had my 2 best friends and a lot of others to keeps safe. Got another test later,was negative,had no real symptoms except my body is 63 years young! I'm more of a NASCAR guy, but the fact that Shug enjoys any motorsports at all brings me joy, and seeing him get to enjoy this is awesome.

Back in the late 80's I think, there was no American F1 race, but there was on in Montreal. So we drove up there from TN. It was a great time. The pneumatic-valved petrol engines were a joy to hear in person. Thanks for the flashback.

I'm from the west coast of Canada and this is the first time I've watched your channel and I'm glad I did. I'm 74 and saw the first F1 race held in Canada, the 1967 Canadian GP At Mosport. Jim Clark was on pole in his Lotus; Jack Brabham won. It was a dream come true. I had to wait a long time to see my second race, 2014 at Montreal. Daniel Riccardo won for Red Bull; Nico Rosberg on Pole for Mercedes. Imagine that, a lifelong F1 Fan and I've only been to two races. Thanks for posting this. What surprises me is how excited and knowledgable American fans are about F1. I thought they didn't care. Now I want to make the trip south and be at COTA next year. Maybe I'll see you there.

Thats great you were able to attend the GP! I didn't realize you were a F1 fan. I attended the F1 races at Indy until they stopped using that venue. Have been going to the Indy 500 the last ten years, well at least up until the Covid threw a wrench in that, but am going back in 2022. You would enjoy the Indy 500 I think.

Love it. When I was in high school my friend and I used to go to Road America for the vintage races. Our first time there we were sitting at the top of the hill looking over the hurry downs section. From that spot the trees blocked the view of the long straight into turn 5(?) but you could hear it. The sprint we were watching from that spot was an open wheel class from around the late 70's or so and later. Most cars were of the earlier era. The pace lap started and all the cars went by. Then the announcer on the PA said one more entry was starting from pit lane and a moment later we could hear behind the trees this high pitched EEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee SCREAM of an engine. My friend and I just turned and stared at each other. The only thing we saw in the pits that could make a sound like that was a 90's (relatively current era at the time) Ferrari F1 car we thought was just on display. It was in first place by the end of the first lap and an experience I'll never forget. Those cars are on another level and you have to experience it to truly understand it.

Went to COTA over the weekend to my first F1 race with my brother-in-law. We were in some of the same areas and might have walked past you. It was a great time and so glad I went.

Glad you got to see the race in person. I watched my man Max win at home on TV. I did see one F1 race live many years ago at Watkins Glen with Jimmy Clark. Nothing like seeing them live. I actually took my VW beetle out on the course a few weeks after the race. Nobody there but me and and the Jag I was getting in the way of. LOL. Take it easy.

The good ol "my covid test was positive" excuse. I can't wait to use that on a future family outing.

Many of us enjoy that solitude and quiet of the forest but whoooooo buddy the energy of a crowd like that is also exhilerating! Could feel the energy in your video. Go team McLaren and Ricciardo who's a Buffalo Bills fan!

I was there! We were in the main grandstand three rows up from P4 and the Alpha Romeo and Haas paddocks). My first f1 race. When I saw you at turn 1, i was hoping you had video of Riccardo's donuts in the dale earnhardt car. Thoroughly enjoyable weekend at the track, and in Austin.

I hear ya Shug, went to the Daytona 500 a few years back. Can't even describe how fast those cars were and the sound was incredible.

Terrific! This just came into my feed. I'm American and have a few years on you and am a lifelong F1 fan. How could I not enjoy this video. I live in New Hampshire and my "home" race is Montreal. Been to quite a few beginning in the late seventies. As you know the Canadian GP has been cancelled twice. It was so great to see you walk through the gate and catch Lando and Daniel in the pits. And man were you rewarded, That was a worthy race under any circumstance. So glad you had fun and thanks for sharing the experience.

So happy you got to see the race in person. Sounds thrilling to be planning future trips. Think about Road America next year. It's a beautiful track with lots of good places to get up close to the action. I drove formula fords there many a long year ago.

You did it Shug! All that planning and preparation, long drive, hotels and spending time with friends. There is NOTHING like be AT the track to see it live. Thank you for the encouragement to get out and do things and see events live. Sad that Hickory got sick and couldn't join you guys. Thanks for what you do.

Found Formula 1 via Drive to Survive on Netflix during lockdown and have been a fringe fan ever since. Your excitement on it is contagious and thanks for sharing it. 👍

The 2021 USGP was my first race in-person as well. Also woke up around 4:30 on Sunday morning to get my seat at Turn 1 and me and my high school buddies didn't move for 9 HOURS! Thank you for sharing your experience! My experiences that weekend were very similar to yours!

Great video Shug, I was fortunate enough to be involved in Indy Car and NHRA drag racing in my career. You are 100% right, the televised experience while different and having its advantages, are no match for the in person sights and sounds!

I got really, really hacked last year. I lost basically every Google thing I had, including RU-vid. I had to start fresh. New accounts for everything. I've been slowly remembering what I liked to watch, and man, I can't tell you how much I missed your channel. I'm back. Old face anew. Thank god you still make videos. I really love your stuff! Excuse me. I've got some catching up to do.

I was there last year too! I think I want to sit at the esses this year. I was at turn 1 last year. It was cool to watch the start, but I want to see the cars rip going 150+ through those s curves. I’m leaving on Thursday too, so maybe I’ll see if they have the track open. I’m in Dallas so my hotel is about 2 and a half away.

Awesome time @ COTA! Speedy recovery to Hickory. I’ve been up to Montreal twice, hard circuit to walk around and get a good view. COTA is such a great circuit for both drivers and fans! Woo Buddy! Team Papaya!

We share so many things in common Shug! Very many similar interests and likes - Hammocks, Backpacking, Cars, F1, James Hoffman and coffee! Great stuff, so happy you got the opportunity to make this happen, too bad Hickory couldn't make it, damn the COVID!

Glad you got to make it out. My brother and I were camped out at turn 11 as well. Just a little bit deeper into the corner so we could see the monitor. Great spot to watch!

I went from Prost to Mansell to Schumacher. Many others of that era as well. Actually got to meet a few. Happy for you buddy. My routines were similar when I was a fanatic.

I was lucky enough to see all the F1 races back when they were at Indianapolis during the Schumacher era. Lots of fun! Glad you got to experience it.

Love F1 racing! I was lucky enough to work behind the scenes doing photography for Indy racing at COTA... I had access to the garages, cars, pits, and shot from the inside of turn one! But F1 is a completely different story, I could only dream of getting that kind of access!

That's something that I would like to see as well. A few years back, we went to the Cheyenne Rodeo. It's just one of those things that you should experience at least once.

Hey Shug. Nothing like your first F1 race live. The speed just doesn't come across from the TV. Its a brilliant circuit with some great views. That meal you went for looked yum. Bet you got home quicker than you did going. America is really embracing F1 now. Its a great weekend. I love F1. Have done for years. Great atmosphere with the fans. Never done the hotel thing, I usually go camping with my tent around Europe. Maybe next time take your hammock :)

Went to F1 race at Brand Hatch Circuit UK back in 1971 was excited to see Graham Hill race, unfortunately Jo Siffert crashed and died and the race was called after 15 laps. I've always wanted to watch a NACAR race at Talladega, you may have just given me the motivation to make it next year. Cheers Shug !

Glad you all had a good time. Speedy and complete recovery to the Maple King. I did the Angleworm trail with a buddy. Really opens up the possibilities of the Boundary Waters for other than canoeing. What a great trail, not at all what I expected.

From a veteran of F1, my first GP was in 1983, I love your enthusiasm and love of the sport. Next year see's great changes to the cars and great opportunities for all teams and drivers. If you have a way to do so, come to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, you will be able to join 100,000 others camping out for the weekend, and experience the love of motorsport we have here in the UK.

So pumped for you getting to do this!! I did a similar trip solo to the USGP a few years ago. I tent camped at a nearby state park, got there before the gates opened each day like y’all did. Hammock camping, F1 and now I heard you name dropped James Hoffman, if we ever meet, we will not run out of things to talk about!

Glad you got to go Shug! I’m more of a Super Bike and Moto GP guy but nothing, absolutely nothing, beats being there and having the filings in your teeth loosened from the exhaust notes (never forget earplugs). I was at the first Moto GP in Laguna Seca ( my first) at the Corkscrew with my camera during practice runs. I had just turned off the camera to preserve the battery when Valentino Rossi ran off the track and through the inside gravel. He rode through, at speed, on that custom GP bike like it was nothing and I missed the shots that probably would have paid for my entire trip. Exciting times at any major race track and good on ya buddy.

There are places that will train you and let you drive a formula one car for not too much money so maybe that is your next adventure? I have been to many Indy 500s, and qualifying days. Hard to put into words how fast those cars are. The engine noise is awesome. We sat at turn 3 to see the short shoot, turn four and down the homestretch. If you’re inside the track, the cars are just a blur going by. Glad ya made it to see it live.

Was as much fun as watching you in a canoe. Hope, your friend Hickory is fine.

That was an intense race. My heart was pumping hard in the final stages. Glad you got to experience it. The first lap fight between the McLarens and the Ferraris must have been incredibly special for you. I'm studying Vehicle Dynamics and just the thought of seeing such majestic cars in person gives me goosebumps.

Happy you got to see a F1 race, it's a wonderful experience. I've been a McLaren fan since seeing them and James Hunt at Brands Hatch in 1976. Living in the UK, I've been lucky to see a fair few. That first day anticipation at the track never leaves you. Hope you get to see a few more Grand Prix. 👍

Been to COTA in 2018. Best time ever. Floating on air for a few weeks afterwards. My wife is in love with the Honey Badger. She actually wept when saw him on the grid pre race. Good times. Definitely need to experience in in person to feel the energy of race weekend.

We went to an Indy car race about 20 years ago and it was awesome.

I was there!!! What a fantastic weekend! We sat on the S-turns for qualifying, the Turn 11 (on the 10 side) for race day. Oh crap! I'm in your vid! Last lap, black shirt, papaya McLaren hat, black shirt, gesticulating top left. No kidding! Does that make me Shug-famous? Haha Bada$$.

Shug, Been watching your channel for years. Every once in a while you give us a glimpse of your personality. I had no idea you were a F1 fan. I can absolutely understand your fascination with F1. I was at my 1st F1 in downtown Detroit 1984. There is no way that a video catches how awesome F1 cars and crowds are. Thanks for sharing your excitement!
