A bit off subject. I was recently discussing the definition of "educated" with a friend who is a Liberal Arts college professor. He made a comment how "skilled" trades folks are "uneducated" and mentally can't understand the "complexities" of the world. I see it over and over. Folks who think anyone who isn't sitting in a cubicle at some random corporation is "stupid". Your video would run counter to his claim. As the owner of small auto repair/performance shop, some of the most intelligent folks I have ever met have been mechanics/tuners and machinist. Awesome job folks, awesome job.
@Ethanmor
@Ethanmor 6 лет назад
Off topic, but oh so true. Many people in the liberal arts who read and write well and are well spoken believe those qualities are the only important qualities, but that is because they are the people who we tend to see in the media and in business management where those qualities are important. And most importantly, in politics the wordsmiths rule over us, so they come to believe they are superior. In reality no one shook up the countries so that all the intelligent people ended up in the coastal regions and capitals, intelligence is geographically dispersed and there are plenty of incredibly intelligent people who are not glib, who are even socially awkward and poorly adjusted. In fact many of the greatest historical geniuses were poorly adjusted socially, there are entire books devoted to them such as "Weird Brains." The Silicon Valley is full of awkward but brilliant engineers. And the fact is that few of the liberal arts mavens have ever designed or built anything, they comment, they write, but they don't explore, invent, build and take risks. Our entire world is dependent on engineers, not wordsmiths. Just look up the epic accomplishments of Scotland's Stevenson family, the lighthouse engineers who saved countless lives, the father, uncles and grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, one of the world's great writers. Look at the great bridges of the world, the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, the product of a self-taught engineer that is still carrying traffic today and closing in on its second century. Motor racing is full of brilliant self-taught engineers who have pushed the limits of technology, men like Bruce McLaren and Jack Brabham and of course who can forget Smokey Unick?

Skilled tradespeople are as educated as anyone with a liberal arts degree. This includes skilled laborers. They are not educated in the same way as a college graduate but they are trained in the same mathematics, sciences, the scientific method of analysis, writing, all the things a college graduate knows. You can get a bachelors or masters degree in mechanics now...

A few notes. First, glad to see the videos again, because Tom and his team at NRE are an inspiration to all gearheads. Second, it seems like I start asking if something is possible, and here comes Tom with it on display. Third, I would love to know what power she makes at full bore (I'm going to estimate somewhere between 1900~2300). And lastly, if Tom were to read this, with you guys building true mechanical artistry, would you be able to point me in the right direction to learn how to build motors like this? I would love to be able to pass something like this down to my children and grandchildren, because an addiction to horsepower beats an addiction to drugs! Thanks, guys, and I can't wait to see what comes out of the Dreamland at NRE.

Tom, I wonder if that ECU can be used to control common rail diesel systems. I ask because there are a whole lot of '08 to '10 Ford 6.4 powerstrokes that fail, leaving nice truck bodies without an engine. Updated fuel and emission controls can make replacement engines last longer. Specifically to add a 9th injector for the regen cycle after the turbo, as opposed to adding fuel to the exhaust stroke on the back cylinders with those cylinder injectors, resulting in high temp conditions and failures in those cylinders. I suppose that is a question to pass on to the controller manufacturer, as your videos are for gasoline engines.

All F1 cars use a mandatory ECU supplied by Cosworth, and have been for some years - but I know what you mean, LIFE ECUs are used in pretty much all other top end motorsport. The top end european race stuff is gob-smacking in what it can monitors and control - like the spark plug voltages for combustion efficiency. If you check out the options, I wouldn't be surprised if you could rig it up to wipe your bum - very versatile bit of kit.

Tom Nelson ah that's makes sense I take it pretty much closer the over laps the more time both valves are open at the same time hence less pressure builds up and the longer they are apart the more air and pressure builds since it was no where to go. I'm sure there is a hell of a lot more to it then that but super interesting! Thanks Tom I know your a busy man and I appreciate the wisdom!
