From 2012 they used the V8, before that the cars had a Nissan/Renault 3.5 V6.
Many of the drivers from the "World Series by Renault" made it to F1, which is why this series was regarded as one of the most important proving grounds for the drivers since all cars were basically the same.

2017 was the final year of this series. Formula 2 is now the series just below F1.
