You lose your parents, you become an orphan. You lose your wife and you become a widow. You lose a child... And there's nothing to call it. That's how bad it is -Tobias Fornell
Katherine Hepburn said something similar in "Suddenly, Last Summer" to Montgomery Cliff. Loss of a child is so unthinkable there's not even a word to it. I've never had children, but I still feel for any parent who lost a child.
One of my brother suddenly died when he was 15, he should have been 30 now. But my parents and all family members never forget. The pain is still here, he was so kind. PS: sorry for my bad English
I think we all know who sent Vance the poem. The one and only Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the man who survived the losses of many loved ones and powered through. He saw Leon's pain and sent it anonymously. This is just my guess, but it feels right.
The NCIS writers must be related to every enemy Gibbs and Fornell ever had. They are so wrong for writing Emily off the show like this. She was literally the only living child/neice Tobias and Jethro had, and now they so ingloriously take her away? That is so messed up...
No they are being real, it happens in real life and also the actress who plays her, contract probably ended and they couldn't come to an agreement on pay or maybe she didn't want to do it anymore, many reasons why they could have wrote her off.
@@a_lotusinthemud Not really, even in real life not so many people die as in NCIS. It seems there is an unwritten rule that no one is allowed to have a happy family without severe trials. Even Mcgee with Delilah being injured and in a wheelchair.
@@drl5002 do you know how many people die in a year its a hell of a lot more than on NCIS and McGees wife was always in her chair and why do you think they aren't happy seems to me they are the writers wrote them having a child so yeah real life people die.
Relating to Emily helped make Gibbs more relatable to viewers. The killing off of characters long ago became gratuitous, like the Sopranos. Except on The Sopranos you lose gangsters. On this show we lose the ones we grow to love.
Gibbs still has his kids (team) he told Vance this season or last That those kids is all he has left he has his kids in Tony ,McGee ,Ziva Bishop Jimmy and lets not forget even though we don't see them There is Franks Daughter in law and granddaughter gibbs talks about them time from time he has Tony Tim's and Jimmy's kids too
@@thomascharles7724 I remember when Gibbs was also shaken up by Kate's death at the end of season 2. He told Fornell that Kate was like a daughter to him.
@@emilio2647 he wasn’t the only one shaken up by Kate’s death, the entire team was. Hell, I think that was one of the first times we saw Tony get deadly serious seeing as he basically wanted to do the same thing as Gibbs wanted to (kill Ari)
@@martinthomas1293 there already weren’t very major characters. Killing them off wasn’t necessary. They could have simply just given excuses. Brenna was never really shown and Emily could have just left for rehab. They would be alive and we would be happy
Emily wasn’t really my favorite character but it makes me sad I’m no longer gonna hear her yell at some innocent bystander or complain to Gibbs about Fornell. In my opinion that’s what makes this scene so sad. And then there’s Breena, like they really just killing off whoever they want now.
This might be a far far reach but I’m hoping that they can bring her back. Like maybe some government agency faked her death to protect her and find the drug dealer guys or something like that.
@@JamarriKelly yea abut they didn’t really need to kill her off since she was never really ever shown on the show. She was mainly just talked about so they could’ve just stopped showing her character but just continued talking about her and nobody would have noticed.
@@gracedicken8708 But the point of that was to show how the pandemic affected the team. they killed off the character they could most afford to be without to tell that story.
Old quote: "When a child loses their parents, they are called an orphan. When a husband loses his wife, he is called a widower. When a wife loses her husband, she's a widow. There is no word for when a parent loses a child, for no word has ever been invented that can express that much sorrow and pain."
@@caitlynmarie8186 I agree with you about thre reality check, but it has been "a serial" too much. if it finds love must be a tragedy as Gibbs, as Palmer. if we love it.. we as fans the characters must suffer a lot of seasons (tiva), Fornell for godsake give him a break.
This show is becoming more like Dallas or general hospital. Maybe at the end of ncis the whole series was a dream and gibbs's wife and daughter are alive. They did something like that on dallas.
'Everyone has their breaking point, this was mine' - Abby Sciuto Yeah we lose people and it sucks. The show, Gibbs, other members and characters, the whole story is actually about dealing with it. So not gonna gripe or question about these tragedies happening one after another. Producers, writers, whoever responsible, it's their call, and they have their reasons. I just hope they understand the dynamic of this 'breaking point', cause I see it's pretty much near in many meaning.
@@phillipmoran537 they definitely took it too far , was really hopeful to see more of emily , loved her dynamic with tobias. This sadly makes him the last long recurring character on the show
@@irespectmuzik yes from covid as tribute to all the families that have lost loved ones and going through it. Also the actress had retired years ago and wasn't coming back for any reason
Diane sure. I think for the most part her story had run it's course. Emily was in essence her replacement. But it would've been nice to see her become an agent at some point (either FBI, NCIS or Treasury).
@@emilio2647 Both actresses for Kate Todd & Jenny Shepard no longer wanted to be in their roles Kate Todd's actress couldn't cope with the hours that come with the role Jenny Shepard only wanted it as a temp role, one with only a few appearances
@@jamesamick3298 they didn't have the desire to kill her off. But this is exactly how things sometimes go. Especially with drugs. Even when you're THIS close... A happy ending is never guaranteed. And it will hit even harder when you allowed yourself to breath a little because of it. It's reality that is often forgotten about.
They did Fornell dirty. I never understood why the producers and writers killed her off. It does nothing to enhance Fornell's life or story and since she was the only family he had left it just seems unnecessarily cruel. Emily was so cool, too
Honestly I think the show is on its way out. It’s been a solid run. Mark Harmon wants to do more directing. I fully expect next season will be the last.
I like how NCIS addresses problems our country faces. Over 60K people die each year of drug overdoes including those who went thru rehab. Sorry to see Emily was a victum.
I felt sorry for Juliette Angelo (Emily's actress). Apparently she wasn't even told they were killing her off. She didn't even know her character was dead until she saw online that she was. It sucked to be sucker punched like that.
Emily was my girl man. She was my favorite. Her sass and attitude over the years. She was amazing. I was so happy when the episode came that she graduated but then this happened. I cried. I knew this was gonna happen. And poor Tobias has nothing left.
You know, I hadn't been up-to date with NCIS for a couple of Seasons now, so when I found out about this (and then, Breena Palmer's death from COVID-19, two episodes earlier), yeah, it was emotional. But it also kind of forced me to take stock of something as I looked back on the series as a whole. I mean, think about it. Kate Todd was murdered. We learned about the murder of Shannon and Kelly, which is why Gibbs is the way he is. Jenny Shepherd was murdered (only to have it later revealed that she only had months to live, anyway). Jackie Vance was murdered. Delilah was paralyzed by a terrorist explosion. Diane Fornell was murdered. Jacqueline Sloane was held captive and repeatedly tortured. Add to that, what happened to Breena and Emily and I just had to think to myself, "God DAMN, man! It is NOT healthy to be a woman on this show!". At least...that's just MY thinking on it.
@@thekryture Actually, I would have mentioned Ziva, had the show not revealed later on that she was actually alive. But still, that's a pretty dismal track record.
@@gothard5 She had Ducky run some tests and diagnose her in secret. I don't remember off the top of my head, what she was afflicted with, but apparently, at the time she was killed, she only had months to live.
Then there was Lara Macy from the LA spinoff who has her throat slit and body burned, recurring character Paula Cassidy who lost her team then dies stopping a bomber.
When I see a movie or show that involves a child dying, all I think of is Lord of the Ring the Two Towers. The king of Rohan when he is visiting his son's grave: "No parent should have to bury their child"😥
Is Season 18 the worst emotionally for NCIS fans. One of owned get shot; Breanna passed away due to Covid; Emily had a fatal drug overdose; now someone we love gets arrested. What is happening?!
At what point do you just don't care anymore. They're killing off another loved one or someones in trouble - again. It's not emotional when its overkill.
This was too much. NCIS has gone nuts!!! This past year has dealt me the death of my mother, youngest brother and a dear cousin that was more sister. . . I’ve had enough reality and look to NCIS to provide an escape. I have watched faithfully since I’ve Princess on JAG. I have every season on DVD but it may be time to say goodbye.
Unfortunately programme makers have to include scenes which might upset some viewers because unfortunately people do get sick, are involved in accidents or get shot and die and if they didn't include every scene which included those things for fear of upsetting someone, the programmes wouldn't be worth the time and effort of making.
As a mom this episode just about turned me into a sobbing pile of goo. Just the thought of losing a child and then that beautiful poem! I looked it up and saved it to my pinterest so that I'll always have it.
Everything I hear of that poem, I think about my, sister and brother who have both passed and what my parents went thru. When they lost two of their children.
I'm so glad I walked away from this show years ago. The random updates on my suggestions are so dark and sad. I really feel for the fandom, you all go through so much.
Same. Killing off Emily is just cruel. I walked away years ago, because I couldn't handle the way they treat their characters anymore. The show should just end. Soon.
@@LiaSaxophone13 that's exactly how I feel. If they're so low on ideas that they have to resort to these tactics just to do SOMETHING, then it's probably time to wrap it up before they take any more away from how great this show was.
I walked away after Tony and Abby left, for me it wasn’t the same and it felt so weird without them. I just couldn’t go on watching after my favourite characters left the show. I always get so invested in shows and end up heart broken when my favourite characters leave or die, I know it’s to boost engagement and shite like that but it sucks.
Wow that poem got me. My dad passed over 2 years ago a couple months after my 25th birthday. Worst day of my life having to say goodbye, take him off life support and watch him take his final breath. I'm blessed that my mom and I can turn to one another and have continued to help each other through. I also lost my nephew earlier that year. He was only a toddler. 2nd worst day of my life. That poem made me think about the memories my mom and talk about. The laughs we have when we think of something my dad or nephew did. Turning to those around you to laugh and cry WITH you really is so immensely important when handling grief. And just because they're gone doesn't mean you still can't find evidence of them in and all around you.
I can relate in having to be the one to tell the doctor it’s time to turn off the machines. I had to with my dad, then a few years later had to witness my mom have a massive stroke. It broke me. Nuff said
My wife and I worked as background on this scene unfortunately a few minutes before this clip. We are seen in the waiting room sitting behind Gibbs and Toby when a doctor walks out and leads us out of the waiting room. But we were able to see the remainder of the waiting room scene from the sidelines. Very poignant even after seeing it about 15 takes.
@@TRYING222SURVIVE right, to propel Abby's exit, even though the magical connection between their characters was non existent before the arc. It was sloppy at best.
Since 2018, I've lost 15 friends to fentanyl and meth overdoses. People I've known since elementary school. I lost my best friend since Kindergarten in 2017 due to an overdose on fentanyl, he was only 27. This episode is about as REAL as it gets. I definitely shed more than one tear. I was bawling. Losing one or two friends to drugs is hard enough, but losing 15 within 6 years is heartwrenching. This episode definitely got to me
I see a lot of comments about characters being killed off for no reason. You never know when any day will be your last. People die suddenly with no explanation every day. At least this show can drive that point home.
To the poster of this video. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the closed captions. They should always be on regardless, even if it's the automatic translator. You have no idea how hard it is to try to hear dialog when one is hard of hearing or in a position that we can't listen at that moment.
why cut it short? The last line of the poem killed me "So, when all that's left of me/is love,/give me away." As someone who lost a close family member in 2020, I felt Palmer's loss keenly as well as Fornell's. This poem is so freaking beautiful that I was weeping at the end of the show even more than I would, normally, empathizing with the characters...
If this was NYPD Blue it would be upsetting but half expected. the first time i heard that poem i just started crying, i didn't lose any child of mine because i never had childrens yet but i know what it's like to lose people you love and family, i lost 4 times and each time i literally started tearing up the second i realised what happened to them, and when you have my sight of the world it's a bit worse then just losing, i can sometimes basically see stuff in the future or hints of stuff in life, sometimes i ethier see that someone i love gonna die soon or after someone i love dies i think i see ways they could've been saved, if i see one of the deaths i can't talk about it with anyone because i am not 100% sure it's gonna happen and i have nothing that can help save them, if they get in the hospital i can't even visit, best i can do is sit down and wait.
idk it just really sucks that they took the addiction storyline and ended it so tragically. becoming sober does not always end with an overdose. people do grow stronger and get past it, and i really, really hoped that emily would have too.
The part of reading of the poem hit right in the gut especially since I lost my grandfather and was never able to say goodbye I know its not the same but it still hurts
For those that may not understand the significance of a group of professionals talking about these things, death, in particular, it is important to understand what role it plays in grief. A great book, I'd recommend is 'Achilles in Vietnam'.
This shows what happens And sometimes they might get addicted to another drug being their end. This shows how one or multiple mistakes can be the end. And how affects the families who have lost loved ones because of a relapse or and addiction. And it’s showing how hard it is to move on from that kind of loss. A young life taken just out of the blue and the families not knowing until their kid don’t wake up or not have a heart beat. Which is a little harder to stomach in real life than on a tv show.
My mom literally walked in my room because I wasn’t in the mood for NCIS and she said “Fornells daughter died” and I knew instantly “overdose isn’t it” and my mom said “yes” I was not happy.
That's one way to fire an actor. Is Fornell gona be next? After everything he went through for his daughter now this. Gibbs will have to make sure he doesn't bite the bullet literally.
Joe spano is better than the garbage he's been given on ncis. He was on hill street blues, which I think is a better show than ncis. Fornell hasn't been well written in years. I do think Joe spano should go to the NBC tv show law and order organized crime.
I cried so hard because this the same way I lost my best friend shock to the system accidental overdose I miss him every fucking day of my life I would have given anything to not have lost him
