FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Stupid is as stupid does," says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother; Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam; Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp; and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

There's that. But it's also that Forrest was one of the men under his command. The trope "a father to his men" comes to mind, and Lt. Dan is probably the closest thing to a father figure Forrest has ever had. Like many fathers, Lt. Dan may push and harangue his men but absolutely will not tolerate somebody else disrespecting them.

Not entirely accurate. While Lt. Dan could certainly have been the one to recommend him for it, any of Forrest's fellow service members could have done so and it would have gone through the chain of command, possibly but not definitely through Lt. Dan depending on if he was still in the service at the time. And a recommendation can also be made by a member of Congress.

I’d like that to be what happened but it probably wouldn’t have gone down like that. Lt. Dan was as depressed as a person can get, however, he may have written or dictated the after action report since this is usually an officers job. The report was probably looked at very seriously since an entire platoon was wiped out and I’d assume the colonel who read it put him up for it. It helps big Time though when an officer is a verifiable witness to it. It’s a pretty classic Medal of Honor story, doing something insane while repeatedly exposing yourself to enemy fire

It's very common with soldiers talking to their former drill instructors. In fact I think it's always the case. Recruits and D.I.s seem to have a special bond between one another. After all D.I.s are basically the people who "raised" you in the military. D.I.s basically see the recruits under their supervision as their own kids. That's why Lt. Dan is always incredibly pissed whenever someone insults Gump.

@jayaom4946
@jayaom4946 Год назад
I would look at it as still more development of Forrest's character. It's totally understandable why Dan is acting like this. It's normal for someone who recognizes power and ranks and honors.... as well as the total dishonor being done to him as a high ranking officer veteran. But Forrest doesn't care about or even recognize these things. Even when a huge honor has been given to him and Dan is being incredibly rude to him Forrest is still is very humble and acts like Lieutenant Dan is his superior. Even though he saved Dan's life and Dan is in terrible condition, Forrest just doesn't hold on to those things in his mind as to how he should treat someone.

I feel like the reason Forest never stopped calling him Lieutenant is because Dan Taylor saw the meaning of his life in service to his country just like every single one of his ancestors. After he survived because of Forest he felt like he's a soldier no more, but Forest refused the notion. He saw what Lt. Did that day. He saw him calling in the air strike on his position, ready and willing to not just die but die by napalm. The horror of such a death I can't even begin to describe. That's why Lt. In this scene he and Lt. Dan are both outcasts. Forrest doesn't realize it but Dan does. He talks about him being made a fool on of on TV by the condescension of the host and other cast(Cavett and Lennon real words but fake contex) Forrest being innocent doesn't see it but he does and resents it because people no longer view him as the strong man he was but as a cripple and the same way he is treated and looked down on.

It's trippy that eventhough both are long retired of military duty, Forest still refers to calling him Lieutenant Dan which the ex-officer neverminded through their association & a bond of brotherhood that formed stronger then the pain & suffering they went through🥹

Dan has the reaction many people have when they hear about the Gospel of Christ But he doesn't realise that God does indeed save us from our pain in this life There are thousands of stories of people that had way worse lives than him that ended up being peaceful about their lives . God helps us to have peace and love within but most importantly He saves us from sin Buts it up to people themselves if they want to believe or not

What a nice reference to the movie Midnight Cowboys, from 1969 at 1:25 min. “I’m walking here.” Which was originally totally improvised.

Does anyone else think Gump's reaction to Lt Dan slipping down the ramp to be weird? He's not very smart, but Gump isn't slow. He should have reacted, in some way, sooner.
