I always thought being of above average intelligence in the Army was a hindrance. You always find yourself questioning the whats and whys instead of just doing. Didn't help when your chain of command and chain of support were clearly not very smart people and only got where they were because they did what they were told.

Just like what college or uni students are perceived as. Person A: "They've got a degree, they must be so smart." Person B: "No, they just did what they're told." Hence why students have always been tools for their lecturer's agenda, and questioning said lecturer is considered taboo. Same goes for religion.

I've seen this film so many times since it came out when I was little, and that scene, if nothing else always gets me. I even cry during reactions. The only time I don't is when I'm trying really hard not to.

Also it gets lost in all the emotion but the integrity he displays in not reading his son’s letter, love it. Such a good movie.

Well of course it took that long, no one wanted to make a story about some pothead racist asshole. Good thing they found a screenwriter who could turn the character into someone likable, so much so that the original author actually made Forrest more like the movie character when he wrote the book sequel. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

It's rare I prefer the movie over the book; in this case it was no contest.

tom hanks said that when the mics were cut off Forrest said "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all." But its important to note that tom hanks is not the creator of the story nor wrote the book so make of that what you will.

I don't think Forest's message was as simple as an "anti-war message." I am a retired soldier in my country, I know what it is to serve, what it is to live a war and what is there when returning from that place. Believe me, what we soldiers see, think or feel and what the Protestants see, think or feel are different. Most of us when we see people protesting war issues…all we see is people in masks, hypocrites who claim to be on your side and then are talking about you behind your back portraying you as a fool or a butcher. Protestants are the same as politicians, they have an agenda to direct the destiny of others from the comfort of their sofas, they all want is to use you or propagandize your circumstances in exchange for personal gain. Forest's message was probably something more along the lines of "a lot of the best people I've known fought in Vietnam, some came back some didn't but their memories will always be with me wherever I go and all I ask all of you is respect them, they were already used in life for the good of one or the other, do not use them also after death.

I feel like they might have known this movie was going to be something special! Whenever I watch Forrest Gump, my experience with the movie is that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long. I just find it to be very inspirational, and it has moments that I think most people can relate to on an emotional level. Also, my brother has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). Yeah that was sad to see, she actually looked like she got emotional about that and she never came back.

They weren't just chirping. Jenny prayed to fly away, hence we see birds doing so above her grave. Another one that people tend to miss is Forrest & his son tilting their heads when sitting side-by-side. Thus, no paternity test needed.

The feather also led us to Forrest. If it didn't, we wouldn't have known his story. Or we could've gotten to know a different person's story.

@@jp3813, yes, the feather has been interpreted in so many ways and of course, there is no right or wrong answer to what it means. From the time I first saw the movie, I thought the feather was us, the viewers. We floated in the air, landed at the feet of Forrest and ended up hearing his wonderful story. And at the end, we floated away again. When we land again at some other place, maybe we will hear another story, hopefully as inspiring as the previous one.

Jenny was the bird always trying to fly away, the feather also represents her being able to leave the Forrests behind knowing they will be OK.

This is the culmination of the ideas in the movie and it’s often overlooked, probably because of the emotion of the scene. Forrest realizes and understands what most people don’t bother to consider; existence is both completely chaotic and influenced by our actions.

The line I like best from the movie is what the feather is about, I think: "I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time."

Love this explanation. Lt Dan's and Forrests relationship was the most heart touching in this film. When he turns up at the wedding, always chokes me up. They have this few seconds look of appreciation and respect for one another. Then both smile so happily x

Forrest Gump won the Oscar for best film and the other nods were great, like Shawshank. But through the years, each watch has given me further reason to say that they rewarded the right movie. I think if this film was released in any other year, it would win. That's how timeless it is.

Well, Forrest did go to space in film, but that was a different movie with Tom Hanks.

Doing it “their way” by adding a scene & insuring a dangerous one, really didn't add anything to the story. They didn't pay for anything out of their own pockets. Their salaries accounted for ¼ of the budget, so they agreed to a lesser fee in exchange for a piece of the profits. They ended up making 10X their original salaries, this had little to do with artistic integrity.

@@JacopoBasanisi, As a Fellow "old Man", it is my duty to confirm that you are right, the "virus" was HIV/AIDS and the life Jenny lived more than made it possible for Her to get it.

That added more pathos to the scene, because we knew the outcome, and it was linked to a big thing, just like the rest of the movie. It was many times more emotional for us (whereas those younglings were just "simply" sad)

The second time, you realize what an absolute broken, manipulative person Jenny really winds up being. Dunno if that's why she didn't want to watch the end, but I know some folks really despise her for that part.

Agreed, so many things in FG were a big technical achievement. From Lt Dan's legs, to Kennedy, to the bombing in Vietnam. So much work went into it, Kennedy's mouth moving may not look amazing in 2021, and you could probably do that on your phone now, but back then, it was all new.

She does that a lot. I ignore everything she says. Everything has to be an -ism or have some sort of alternate agenda with her. Was the IQ test system dated and flawed? Yes, but that doesn't mean it was anything more than a bad idea.

I have never known anyone well who didn't suffer some kind of trauma in their life. Most of them never used it as an excuse.

Jenny felt she didn't deserve Forrest's love.

Being treated like Jenny was since early childhood fully affected her sense of self worth which can mess with what one believes one's worth. She wanted to be loved by Forrest, but didn't feel like she was worthy of that kind of pure, unconditional love that he offered. Wanting something so bad but not feeling worthy of that thing can cause one's choices to become erratic and be seen as, perhaps, villainous to anyone who isn't willing to give that person the benefit of understanding, as has clearly happened with Jenny since this movie came out.

@@thaesimir --- Thanks Doc. Geez! Jenny didn't even tell Forrest that he had a son until the kid was school age and she knew she was dying. If she hadn't been dying, there is absolutely no indication that she would have ever told him.
