I still think of her whenever I watch reactions to this movie. Jenny got to find; even if for a very short time, some peace and joy; in real life it's so much rarer. kerk
The thing is, to afford Jenny a full pardon because of a bad upbringing is to probably afford her father a full pardon as well… I’m sure her father had a messed up upbringing. Otherwise we end up giving selective pardons. If he’s held responsible, Jenny must be as well. If she’s excused, then her father and everyone else must be excused. Why can we pick and choose? Ultimately, those who harm others SHOULD be held to account. Morally.

Fun Fact: The actor that played Lieutenant Dan, Gary Sinise, has a charity for wounded veterans and has helped thousands if not ten's of thousands of returning service members. He's made the most out of being a celebrity in my opinion.

I confess: I was one of those people growing up that hated Jenny for what she had done, and only now understand as an adult just how her abusive and awful childhood shaped her decisions. Definitely one of those films that takes on different meanings depending on when you watch it, and made all the better for it.
I love the scene where Liutenant Dan tells the girls to never call Forrest stupid, it shows how even through his rough exterior he already understands Forrest.
at the time of the movie they didn't state what it was. Most people assumed aids, due to the time period, lifestyle, etc. Later in a follow up book they clarified it was not aids, but most believe they did that because of how Jenny was perceived in the movie having aids and spreading it, etc with her being bad.
@Remington597man I guess that would be a little "too far" to have Jenny manipulate and ultimately give a deadly disease to a mentally disabled war hero. I'm not sure how long it takes to die of HIV/AIDS in those days. I know it was a lot faster before they had treatment, the famous AIDS patient Ryan White died in 6 years. But I guess it's possible that she was AIDS free when she had the one night stand with Forrest and during the subsequent 5 year interlude between having a one night stand with Forrest and the subsequent reunion with Forrest in '81 that she had a one night stand with someone and contracted it that way.
One of the saddest lines that never gets credit is Jenny saying, “Why are you so good to me?” And Forrest just looking at her like she’s crazy. Like, it’s so natural to him and she isn’t able to trust it or believe it. Crushing
When she was 9, my daughter figured out that she could get out of trouble by making me laugh. I was yelling at her over something she did; I can't remember what it was, but I was soooo pissed! Finally, she puts her head down and and says in her Gumpiest voice, "I'm sorry, JenNAY." I couldn't stop laughing. We still laugh about it today.
My favorite tidbit of info from the making of this movie: Forrest has an accent like that because the child actor had one and Tom Hanks decided to copy his accent instead of making the kid change it.
I saw this in he theater with my family, and my father was absolutely BAWLING during the vietnam rescue scene... Later he told me that it was one of the most accurate representations of the war as a whole (from the landing to the leaving), and though he never got specific, I think it reminded him of his platoonmates.
Thank you to him and to you/your family for the lifelong sacrifices that trauma must have cost you all. I can't help but think something went really right on his road to healing that in that moment he couldn't or wouldn't stop himself from being vulnerable in front of yall like that. See it's not that Forrest doesn't know what love is, it's Jenny that doesn't know what love is. See when Forrest shows one little love to Jenny, she runs away, because she doesn't want to become her dad, and abuse Forrest.
I think it's more like she doesn't think she deserves Forrest. That's why she seeks out abusive relationships because that the kind of relationship that she had with her father.

I genuinely believe that's the god honest root of most people's personal problems, especially when it comes to not accepting any love from ourselves that we don't think we deserve. So damn hard to learn to love yourself and show yourself compassion when you've never truly known wtf that even is. And people hate her for that self-neglect and abuse. Talk about a truly tragic figure.

I always thought Jenny left because for her, everyone she loved and everyone who claimed to love her, hurt her, so she was afraid of loving Forrest. Its very sad.
I read somewhere that the author explained the reason Jenny kept leaving Forrest is because that was protecting him from her and her problems! She felt although it would be easy to let him to save him, she didn’t want to be dragged down in her darkness! Jenny always loved Forrest, and throughout the movie she always kept saying “you don’t want to marry me Forrest” to him! She honestly didn’t believe she deserved Forrest’s love!
Of course! I don’t see how people can truly trash her. So many things in her life effected how she now handles and perceives things; it’s really not her fault!
@@OGBReacts this film was exceptionally important to me growing up as well Simply put, Forrest, due to the era and the lack of awareness of mental illness at the time, was undiagnosed autistic. What was cruelly referred to back then as simply being “slow” or “simple”…and I myself was diagnosed with aspbergers syndrome a a child, which is effectively a subsection of the same thing So when I struggled to adapt and grow as a person, growing up, when I (rarely) had the chance to make new friends, I would hold this film up as an example to make explaining easier, I’d first confirm they’d seen the movie, then said “imagine a scale, where 0 is a ‘normal’ person, and Forrest was like a 8.5-9… And that I was about a 3.5-4 And then people found it easier to understand p, rather than jus assuming I was just an asshole, when really I was struggling to understand, trying like mad to make the “correct” response, but it tended to come across wrong… Then Big Bang theory came out and people got an even easier way to understand me… But that’s a whole different discussion since there’s people who completely miss sheldons high functioning autism and simply presume he’s an arrogant jacks on the ego trip of his IQ…

@@OGBReacts well, what’s truly sad is when you look at the present world…it seems…again SEEMS…that all too many people out there try to crush those who try to b optimistic…almost like the mob mentality of “for whatever reason we can’t see ourselves being happy in this world, therefore no one else can” Personally, it’s discovering reactors such as yourself, which help me stay connected with the more positive aspects of my childhood, as I grew up with films like this, and was the prime age for when the lord of the rings trilogy came out in the cinemas, and due to my own mental issues, watching all the big films like those when I was younger spoiled me as I knew the story before having the emotional awareness and maturity to be able to grasp and perceive the true gravity of some things, so watching reactors it’s kinda like being able to relive that wonder when first watching something I was a sub with bell after the fellowship vid, and I’ll be here for the duration.
The virus I think she ended up having IMO was AIDS... The way the movie used historical events and the fact that she was a drug user made me think that. Also the term “the Doctors say I have a virus but they don’t know what it is” was what many people were told when AIDS crisis was at it’s peak.

My girlfriend and I love this movie; we have a little habit of going out for shrimp at our local Bubba Gump's (it is a real restaurant, for anyone who didn't know) and then watching the movie afterwards. We always cry like babies lol

Of all the characters I have to say Lt Dan is my favorite character arc. To see someone go from normal to hitting rock bottom to learning to live with their situation and eventually find hope again.
Lieutenant Dan is one of my favorite story lines in this film. He starts out as a tough guy and then the war completely changed his life in a way that he never expected or wanted it to. It takes him a long time to deal with that trauma and to realize how lucky he was to not go out the way he always expected he would. And once he makes peace with that, he is able to start living life again and he comes to realize that Forrest is the person he owes for that. When he walks up to Forrest at his wedding, with his new fiance and new legs... it's an understated moment compared to some of the others, but in my opinion one of the most touching ones. He reclaimed his life and the smile he gives Forrest shows how he came around to end up being happier now than he probably ever was, even before the war.
that movies non-stop emotions. Laughing, crying, anger, nervous.. Was cute the way they worked him into so many different historic spots. It's not outright said but pretty much everyone believes Jenny dies from Aids, when it first started that's pretty much how everyone explained it. (some virus the doctors dont know what it is and cant do anything about it ).
First time viewing and I have subscribed immediately! Your genuine reaction and loveable personality are a joy to watch but your sympathy and willingness to understand Jenny made me an instant fan! Most people can't understand what that kind of trauma can do to someone especially at a early age. She was literally trapped in her own hell. When your in the kind of pain that haunts every second of every day...you don't really know what your doing. It's like a drowning animal. Its just trying to keep its head above water. It will drag whatever's close to it down. She didn't want to drown Forrest but she also couldn't let go of the only real love she ever had. Yes she made mistakes but at least she died finally finding her place. Most reactors have no compassion for Jenny and thinks she's just playing with Forrest's feelings. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for understanding why Jenny is the way she is! So many people (and so many reactors) just straight up hate on her. And I mean, yeah, sure, get upset at her and the terrible decisions she makes, but also recognize that she's just a broken person, and hurt people hurt people. Especially considering the time she lived in... it's unlikely that she would have even fully understood how her own trauma affected her, let alone gotten help for it.

The most salient point of the story is that Forrest *is* happy. In spite of all the terrible things life has dealt him, he finds a sort of simple happiness throughout it all. And where most of even the other characters around him-Jenny, Lt. Dan-find pain and suffering, Forrest himself sorta just takes life as it is and comes. And in the end, what happiness those others around him find happen because of his. Sure, many think happiness comes from life giving them good things, but then your happiness can also be taken away, because it’s dependent on outside forces, like “life”, giving you your reasons to be happy. Forrest generally finds happiness and contentment in spite of adversity, by persistence.
I believe that Jenny felt like she was being like her father when she turned to Forest and was being abusive to someone she believed was innocent --- and that she was not deserving his love --- She ended up giving him his greatest gift --- to be a daddy

That was actually very true to life. I was 13 when people started dying from AIDS, and I remember that's how people talked about it. It was very mysterious, and people were very scared. It's similar to how people still prefer to refer to Covid as the pandemic.

I love this movie for I’m 59 and this is an All time classic. I heard she died of hepatitis but I know the time era and you could think aids anyway this is also a breakthrough movie with putting stars in with newsreels in our past. Love it...

Also Gary sinise who played lieutenant Dan went on to start the lieutenant Dan band that goes around to many military bases and plays a lot of really cool music. I've seen him perform twice. My husband just recently retired from the military. Gary sinise is an amazing man and he started the Garry Sinese foundation for wounded veterans. He plays all over the world.. I love that you understood Jenny. So many reactors hate her and her character. Amazing reaction!

Another banger of a reaction/review.... I think the film was implying Jenny had contracted HIV. Or perhaps AIDS, considering how quickly she passed. And in the mid-80s ... there wasn't much they knew yet, other than maybe keeping people comfortable at the end of their battle. The Watergate part is my favorite--if only because of the times, lol. A powerful, shitty leader brought down through his own direct actions--NIXON brought down the one time he does something sort of nice. Recommending a "better" hotel. All the terrible things and an act of kindness brought him down. LOVE that irony. And yup, Forrest didn't need a bus ... he needed a few hours of reflection and grounding before seeing Jenny again. And so many people are Jenny-haters, forgetting or not caring that CSA survivors are climbing a mountain that's so much tougher than most. She loved Forrest but like you said, she probably thought he deserved better. And she stayed away to figure out who she was and if that person could BE BETTER ... and I don't think she figured out herself or how to be better until she had her son. Having to be better to give her child better helped her pull herself together. To be a better her even if she didn't know what that would look like. She made a lot of not great choices but ... she had been starting from a deficit since her mother died. Maybe before that. In a sense, she never stood a chance, with a father like hers. That she was able to get her life together at all is a testament to the good person she actually was and could have been all along, if not for having her entire life derailed. I cheer every time Forrest watches that house get bulldozed. And I wonder what happened to Jenny's poor sisters.... Dorothy Harris is an immortal who just likes driving school buses. And she likes polite, well-meaning kids, so she'll do alright by the Gump kids. I LOVE that she smokes an unfiltered cigarette the size of a ladle while she drives. That's gangsta even for the 80s. I did too! I cry at everything. If it's sad I cry. If it's happy, I cry. If I have to tell someone the plot of an emotional movie, I cry. I was telling my mom about the final of Great British Bake-Off when Nadia won and gave that amazing little speech and I couldn't even get through telling her about it- I started bawling.
there are a handful of film scenes that will always reliably make me cry without fail, and damn near at the top of the list is Tom Hanks' acting when he hears Jenny say their son won't suffer from the same mental issues his character had. People think that realistic crying is one of the most skillful things an actor can pull off, but really it's realistically /trying not to cry/ that gets me every damn time, and man was Hanks phenomenal on that one.
I love the fact that every photo they show of Forrest in this movie has him caught in mid blink.(the ping pong magazines, ping pong cutout, the Fortune mag cover, etc.) 😂
A little detail I always love pointing out, that goes to show how much detail there is even for the most minor characters. If you watch when Forrest goes to school at 6:25 then Forrest Junior goes to school at 34:50, Dorothy Harris is chewing gum the second time because she's quit smoking.
I didn't think he was going to kill himself by jumping off the boat. At that moment after the storm, Lt. Dan was finally at peace with himself and God.
This was a very special movie for the baby-boomer generation. It for a lot of us the first time we sat and were given a reflection on our entire lives, this movie put forest right in the middle of every fad and forgotten historic turning point of our lives. A look back at the carefree good old days. Something most people do at the end of their lives. It Showed how insignificant people like us can have a purpose and make a difference and never notice. Like you and other reactors have touched us made a profound difference and you'll never know...
@ 21:39 Just in case you didn't catch that little street scene, music and that "I'm walking here!!" while pounding the cab... it was a reenactment from a very popular movie at the time "Midnight Cowboy" (1969), and that song was a very popular one called "Everybody's Talkin' " by Harry Nilsson. This movie is full of historical references and nostalgic to a lot of us who lived during those years.
The screenwriter, Eric Roth says Jenny had contracted HIV. The author of the book, Winston Groom states it was Hepatitis C in the follow up novel. Both viruses were becoming more common in the 80s because of shared needles amongst IV drug users. I’m more inclined to go with Groom’s explanation as the original storyteller, but either virus could be plausible. If Jenny had contracted HIV which had developed into AIDS, however, it wasn’t portrayed in the film.... unless that was a conscious decision of the film makers.
HIV and AIDs without Decent treatment, will cause The lymph nodes and even blood vessels to form Dark Patches. She had none in the movie.. HCV Takes awhile to cause Massive damage to the liver. I~ can believe she caught HVC, due to all the needles she might have used as her Character. Back then they Called it non-A, non-B hepatitis. This was due to them misdiagnosing it, and not having any Strain Pattern in labs. I guess they were all busy with AIDS "" Most doctors would have people change their Diet/Eating/drinking habit. To give their Liver a break. I remember with my sister back then, they gave her lots of vitamins, and antibiotics. She would turn yellow on bad days. Most people could not change their habits, and this along with the HVC would kill them a lot quicker. making it a big killer back then... So yes, i lean towards your answer to HVC was what killed her. "due to no purple to black Lymph nodes on body."
@@porflepopnecker4376 my only problem was she has no symptoms of it. {2weeks after infection} She would have Kaposi sarcoma all over her face, and certain areas of her body. Inside her mouth/ around her tongue would be covered with leukoplakia "white dried blistering " she would be losing weight at a fast rate. Most likely due to being under a fever quite frequently/pain in the mouth. ""This happens fast, because of no Real treatments back then."" Now the Famous Singer F. Mercury Hide all of this very well. "makeup, and he wore cloths to hide as much of his body as possible". This was why i considered HVC as her killer. But the movie is good no mater what :)
@@porflepopnecker4376 The reason I assume it was AIDS is because throughout this movie the events and cultural things that are included are fairly big ones, such desegregation and Watergate. It doesn't make sense to me that the filmmakers would decide to kill Jenny off with a more obscure virus when AIDS would fit right in to the movie. I don't get hung up on the movie not accurately portraying what her death would really have been like. Most movies do not portray terminal illnesses accurately.
What's funny is that public transit in the South, let alone the rural south really is like that. I lived in Savannah for a couple of years and had never before seen bus stop signs literally painted on trees! lol. No schedules anywhere, no phone number to call or printed route maps... there was just a general rule that buses run every hour or so. Whether or not it's the top of the hour or the middle of the hour, you have no idea! So obviously, most people drive or just walk but NOT surprised Forrest could have spent at least 2 hours waiting for one - maybe it broke down and he'd never be the wiser until the next one showed up an hour plus later!
I feel desperately sad for Forest and for Jenny also,the way their lives turned out.I just choked up when Jenny died after coming back into Forests life leaving him alone again even though she gave him a beautiful boy.The film finishes with him sitting all alone on the bench,as great as the film is I still find it extremely heartbreaking.The Green Mile is another of Toms brilliant heartbreaking movies.
I have the book, but it's probably more than 20 years since I read it, so I don't really recall any details. But in the book he ends up going on other adventures, even out in space. But he's not the same sweet person as in the movie and I remember him swearing a lot. So I think you would be a little disappointed if reading the book after seeing the movie. The movie is perfect according to my taste. An emotional roller-coaster and great music. I learned the main theme on piano in the end of the 90's on my own, but didn't play more piano until 5 years ago when I decided to buy a piano and really learn how to play. Now I play every day and it's most likely because of this movie. :)

Ok for clarification. At the time of the movie and the book, the virus wasn't identified as aids. After the movie they did a follow up book where it was defined as Hep C, but this was AFTER the movie and most believed they said that because of the bad stigma of Jenny with aids being the bad woman in the movie and spreading, it, being even more bad bringing it to her family. So most believe they tried to lighten up Jenny's image with it being Hep C. The actual Screenwriter said it was ment to be HIV, and not the later clarified Hep C. Most people who watched the movie of course assumed it was AIDS due to the timeframe, lifestyle, all that.
I never really saw this movie as a comedy and, to me, it was always Jenny’s movie. Also, I think based on her years of drug use with needles and her free-love spirit, plus the timing of her death, that the implication was she had AIDS. Based on the fact that you didn’t react to Haley Joel Osment, I’m thinking maybe you haven’t seen The Sixth Sense. If not, I’d love to watch a reaction to that film!
I am about 5 years younger than Forrest and Jenny in the movie. I remember so much of the news back then. Also, my Grandmother, whom we visited once a year, in Savannah, GA, lived near that park where Forrest is sitting. After the movie came out, so many tourists wanted to take pictures there, that they re-installed the bench. (I don't think it is there now, though.) The traffic actually goes in the opposite direction, lol. This movie was quite impressive for the way they blended actual historical news footage, music, fashion and social trends, into the movie. I believe it is a Classic. And yes, Jenny never felt "worthy" of having a Real relationship, after all of the abuse she had suffered from her father. So very sad.

Dude me and my families happiest times were watching forest Gump. It was thw one movie we all loved. We would watch it like once a month for like 10 years. Simpler times thabks for reminding me of those days.

Her telling Forrest he doesn't know what love is when she in fact doesn't. Forrest has experienced more love in his life than she ever did therefore he would be more likely to recognize it. That's also why it took until later in life for jenny to realize she too loved Forrest whereas Forrest had always known
