Mysteriously transported from New York City, Frey Holland finds herself trapped in the breathtaking land of Athia. A magical, sentient bracelet is inexplicably wrapped around her arm, and Frey discovers the ability to cast powerful spells and use magic to traverse the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Frey nicknames her new golden companion “Cuff” and sets off to find a way home.

I think the reaon there is so much hate is because forspoken had real potential to be the 'magic' game. And for many it did not fulfill. People had witcher expectations and got an in my opinion JRPG like game. Wich isn't for everyone and not for me either. So it's mostly just disappointment.

Thank you for this review. I was really excited about this game but the demo and recent reviews had me questioning if the game was worth a playthrough. This definetly changed my mind. Knowing that the magic and parkour are pretty solid (even if it takes a while for it to come together) makes me look forward to playing it.

This review reminds me a lot of my experience for Midnight Suns. The story, writing and the dialogue were not great at all, but the game play and the card based battle system and all that got me hooked and that carried me through. Even part way through I just started skipping dialogue at the social system just to get back to the battles. I feel like that will be Forspoken for me, I replayed the demo after spending time away, and I enjoyed the combat a lot as well. Gonna grab it on sale for sure. Good review!

@@MemoryMori exactly! Not all games that get released need to be an 8 or 9 out of 10 to be considered a must play. Some 6’a and 7’s can just be enjoyable in their own right. Just like we need to praise more AA developers for giving us games that are just decent and don’t really need to reinvent the wheel. If you are having a good time with it, then that’s all that should matter.

I feel the same as Cowboy. Forspoken doesn't seem to be great but it really seems to me at least, like someting that you can have fun in it. Seem like a fun movement and combat system, and a possibly simply platinum trophy to get. Im not buying it at full price but when the price drops I will for sure pick it up to try it out for myself. So many people are really just hopping on the hate wave just as they do the hype wave of other video games. I'm of the perspective that I dont need every game to be some master peice, I just care if it is fun. I would obviously prefer a master peice, and those are the games I would gladly pay full price for. But I honestly don't understand the extreme hate and over criticsim of this game. If you KNOW this is something that you're not going to like, why bother continuing to watch videos on it. Its a waste of your time that could be spent on doing someting that you DO like.

This review is so refreshing. As someone who has watched about the first 3-4 hours of this game, I'm genuinely baffled by the level of vitriol spiraling around Forspoken. (I feel like inherent bias and the lackluster demo come into play here.) It has very real flaws, but overall, a 7/10 score is still a fun game to play. Seeing what I have, I dislike the constant banter (providing an option to minimize it on Square's part was a smart move) and would probably be irritated by having to stop playing to watch cutscenes over and over, but the traversal and gameplay look enjoyable with a pretty average story. Also, your commentary on Frey being too cynical is spot-on when the world she's whisked into is a vast improvement from the life she was familiar with.

A better baseball analogy for this game would be-imagine absolutely loving baseball, and looking forward to the biggest, most hyped-up baseball match of the entire series. So hyped that they charge almost twice as much as normal to get into see the game. Then, when inside, you're instead subjected to one of the most poorly played games of baseball that you've seen in the last decade. That is the Forspoken experience for many people.

I am 100% cool with aggressively average games, I kinda love them actually. Evil West was also aggressively average and had huge issues, I LOVED it. So this very genuine honest review makes me wanna give it a try even more because the combat looks so fun later on. I played the demo so my expectations were tempered prior to launch. Glad to see a review from ya Cowboy, looking forward to Dead Space haha

Just finished the game on hard. It took me 18hrs for the story line. I really enjoyed it besides its many faults. The fighting system is just really enjoyable and made it worth it in my opinion.

I'm not sure, but I think the reason most people are so upset about this game is because of how it was first introduced way back when the PS5 was first being announced. That whole "what next gen will look like" thing. Then the bad trailers with the bad cringe dialog came out and it just snowballed from there. My best guess anyway. I feel like most people are missing the point, this is not just an average game, it's an average game that is trying to force the 80 euro/dollars price point as standard. It's not revolutionary, it's not master-fully crafted, it's just a normal game. Enjoyable? Yes. Worth 80 bucks? No. Price-value isn't there, thus, the negative experience. Stop buying over-priced average before it beco es the norm.

I’ve been watching Hella reviews about this game and people have just been saying the same thing as if they haven’t really actually played it and didn’t have their own ideas about it, but finally when I watched your review, you had all the same thoughts and ideas I had about the game it’s not a great game, but it doesn’t suck like everybody’s trying to say it does. The combat is what drives this game and makes it enjoyable for me💯

Here before the premier: For the most part when they first announced the game I was partially excited by it being an Isekai game and the movement and abilities looked fun. But after witnessing more gameplay it did become clear it probably wasn't for me. The world looked empty and the story didn't seem all that interesting at all. Once I saw the combo system I checked out from personally playing.

"except the cat" I remember a movie in which someone believed that "It was just a f***ing [dog]" was a good candidate for famous last words. Pets are family. In Frey's case, it's the only actual family she had. I haven't seen the whole game yet, but to me, Frey didn't come across as unlikeable at all. Cynical, yes, but that's to some degree understandable given her past life. You don't switch that off like a light switch. Other than that, great review. I have a feeling I know why some people are so aggressive spreading hate about this game, but there's no need to go into that. In any case, it's clear that not every game can be a 10/10 or 9/10, and there's always going to be games out there who didn't reach their potential. But just because a game isn't what people hoped doesn't mean it's an abject disaster.

I appreciate the opening rant and that mirrors my opinion. Sometimes I think people hate on stuff because it is marketed, and because hate means clicks. It also opens up extreme, colorful language. Extreme language is easy, but an average tone requires more nuance. Aggressively average feels like a fair, experienced review.

Based on what I've seen so far from the Let's Play, I agree in general with Cowboy's review. The combat and movement of this game looks very smooth and fluid and a lot of fun, and I think the graphics are nice too. I also really enjoy Cuff's dialog; to me I find him very funny and amusing. Frey (the protagonist), however, I just really don't like her character. I keep feeling watching the Let's Play like she's just really annoying, like someone I wouldn't want to be or hang around, but I think Cowboy put it very well, how it feels like she just forces swear words in too often and she's just so cynical about things all time. She also seems at times like she's intentionally trying to be obtuse, like she expects everyone to understand her, her language, phrases, behavior, etc, but she just visibly gets annoyed by their behavior and customs. Overall, it looks to me like the good outweighs the bad, so I'd be interested in playing it, but I can't see myself paying full price for it.

Dude, thank you for being so brilliant! I personally really loved the game, yes there is room for improvement and you pointed a lot of that out, but did I have fun? YES! Did I enjoy it enough to go back and platinum it? SURE DID! All the people review bombing this really got me mad too like, I just didn’t get it! thank you for calling out the hater hard-ons. That shit is annoying, to say the least. As for the price, I really think being a new IP along with a few other things, they should have listed it at $60. However I used some reward points and a gift card so for $34 I decided to pick it up. Otherwise I probably would've waited for a sale because this is one I definitely feel I'll enjoy but regret spending full price on. Shit, by the time Amazon actually ships this it might be on sale. Still pending shipment despite pre-ordering it. FFXV was a dam good game. The problem was that it only revolved around Noctis and not the party members who's stories, if I recall, were sold as DLC. In terms of the game I had a blast playing it, though. Just wasn't enough FF to feel and be a FF game imo. Great review Cowboy. This is why I love you bro! I tend to look at things from the outside, not w/ biased or hype. You too tend to air on the side of unbiased, have common sense, etc. Simply put I feel we can both objectively view something for what it is. We look at what is is objectively and give an honest, unbiased opinion on something. Something that is clearly lacking in todays world of clickbait, hater-aide fueled opinions. Spot on about the character w/ swearing, w/ her character/dialogue.... We see the potential but bad decisions were made. Looking forward to playing this whenever I get it. Until then, back to Cross Code.

Anyhow, there are too many grown ass children on here that have tunnel vision. I just want to have fun, hoping to have a little meaningful storyline. She’s a juvie with powers.

she even talks about how much she wants to get isekaied, then hates it when she is. I almost feel like it shouldn't have been an isekai. It feels like the story about an almost supernaturally athletic girl trying to put her life back together in new york should've been a seperate game from the fantasy romp

Holy shit. Who would have known there were still actual men on RU-vid and not just guys who follow whatever trend is going on. I actually don’t agree with some of your review, but I am glad you decided to call out all of the fucking children who seem to as you called it “Hate masturbate” the game. Seen your content over the years and never disliked what I saw or anything but from now on I will check out more. Do not own Forespoken because the demo was a mixed bag however I did have fun so I decided to wait for a sale. Then the giant ocean of vitriolic hate tidal wave of children took over the narrative. Last word : The profanity doesn’t bother me at all. I think a lot of people calling it out don’t realize how much they or others use it. Maybe not you, but I legit watched a hater go nuts over the profanity never mind that he was dropping F bombs, saying shit, calling stuff ass etc.. on a 3:1 ratio to the game. Nothing more hilarious then some 20 year old guy who just cussed 32 times complaining that the main character was cussing to much when it was Streamer 32: main character 13. 😑

This game kind of found itself in the middle of a weird intersection of being really mediocre, having strange marketing, and off the back of lots of mediocre SE releases, SE studio sales, and just baffling SE strategy decisions in recent years. If it wasn't an SE game I don't think it would get anywhere as much heat. Also $70.

Thanks for the review. Sounds perfectly reasonable and kind what was expected. Definitely a game for the pic-up during a sale or on PS+ list. Much needed rant at the beginning, but Callisto had a pretty huge heap of hate thrown at it as well...

I think it's a fun game, nice graphics, interesting gameplay, fast action and a wide variety of spells. The conversation of the main character and others is no worse than that of many other games, such as dragon dogma, dragon age, assassins creed, etc. Sometimes better, the development of the main character and how she views the world and herself is fine. But hey, I'm a 70 year old gamer who has been playing games for 42 years and still enjoys them.
