I had one die like this and you will need a good brass so you get consistent neck tension, I switch to a Forster hone die and then use a mandrel to create the neck tension, way more consistent than the bump die.

Gavin, Going from a FL Redding die to the Forster Neck Bump Bushing Die, with all else being equal, I increase my velocity by about 40 ft/s in my 65CM! Knocked me right off my node 0. So, reduced my charge of H4350 from 42 grains to 41.5 grains and I am once again touching holes...and then I ran out of powder! I think 41.4 is going to be drilling the same hole but i need to wait for Hodgdon to resupply!! Love the Forster die! Bumping about 0.002". Hornady brass varies but the .288 bushing is used the most. Picked one up for the 28N too.

Hey Gavin. Love your videos. Awsome dies. Would also love ta see you do a review on all the mighty armoury dies. That would be awsome.

If you dented the neck after firing (dropping the case) is there an expander ball one can add to the die to fix it or would you have to use a conventional sizing die first?

Chuck up that die in the lathe and remove about .007-.010" or so from the base of the die. Don't worry about (pointless) cam over. Then you'll have free reign to bump the shoulder back as much as needed.

Have you tried the Whidden bump neck FL sizing die? I understand it would affect the dimensions in a fireformed case. I bought the Forster bump neck bushing die for 6.5 Creedmoor along with the igage 1” micrometer and their ball micrometer. Also the Hornady comparator and OAL tool with the proper bushing for 6.5 Creedmoor because of this video. I have a Whidden micrometer seater die on it’s way to me.

Would have been nice to check the concentricity of the neck. I have the same die and it throws the concentricity of the neck out.
@elkmo41
@elkmo41 6 лет назад
Could run it without the bushing and use a Lee Collet neck sizer, extra step but may help with neck concentricity.

Nice video, I noticed your using the 400 bushing to measure shoulder but hornady recommended the 375 bushing. I've tried only neck sizing but bolt is very tight to close, would this be a good purchase.

So if i used the 292 bushing, could i essentially leave the neck alone and just bump the shoulder then size the neck separate with my collet die?

Interesting to see the proper shoulder bump. The tool that I have developed (not in production yet though) lets you set the bump even more exactly repeatably to a quarter thou or less than your method and it is not expensive. Regard Martin from UK.

I have the Forster die set for 6PPC. The dies have Sako stamped on them ,but I am running a custom chamber. I bump size but dont want to use the Sako dies. Does Redding bushing neck dies bump the shoulder also.? By the way, I think your videos are great!

To make sure I understand it does not size the body it only sizes the neck for bullet tension and bumps the shoulder back for head space is that correct

@@claverton dude get on Forster's website, they make a die( the one being reviewed) that bumps the shoulder and sets neck tension via bushings without touch the rest of the body. They also make full length sizing dies that do the whole body. They also make neck only dies. The one being reviewed is the bushing bump die.
@ewathoughts8476

You should have shown the inner and outer diameter of the neck so we could judge spring back after sizing. I know this video was about shoulder bump, but you made a big deal on selecting the proper bushing, but did not show the results.

So does the brass need to be once fired before you take that measurement of the thickness of the case or can you also do this with virgin brass as well?
@robertbrandywine
@robertbrandywine 2 года назад
I'm not sure there would be any point since the necks are already sized down and the shoulder set fully back. I only size new brass to true the case mouths.
@stevesaunders6672
@stevesaunders6672 3 года назад
not having all the toys, why not just seat a bullet in whatever brass you have, measure the the o.d. at the neck and subtract .002 and that should be your bushing size. any reason this won't work?
@claverton
@claverton 5 лет назад
I don't get why you would include the neck expander or the decapping rod in the die during this process ... Surely you would've already decapped the brass prior to cleaning and this process? Also, why would you have a neck expander when you have an accurate bushing to get the neck to where you want it? Forgive me if I've got this all wrong but I'm just a beginner at this stuff. Can you take the decapping rod and neck expander out of the die and just use the bushing and bump the neck back?
@jasonmpd2946
@jasonmpd2946 5 лет назад
De-priming: I personally de-prime after media tumbling. If I'm using the wet method with S/S pins I'll de-prime before cleaning. Expander: there is no expander on that die. It's just a small threaded cap to hold the decapping pin.
@claverton
@claverton 5 лет назад
@@jasonmpd2946 after re-reading the Forster info info on their website obviously I got this wrong ... this die doesn't do full length resizing, it only resizes the neck and the shoulder. I've ordered the Forster Bench Rest seating die but will probably order the Redding Type S Bushing FL bushing die because it does the case as well, but is a little more expensive

The Forster neck sizing die can be adjusted to only size as much of the neck as desired. The bushing height is adjusted separately from the die/shoulder bumping height. Very useful feature.

Can you actually get more shoulder bump? If your die was bottomed out there is no room for more bump? I ran into this issue with .223AI. Had to cut some length off the bottom of the die but I’d love to know if there is an easier solution. Thanks!

Have you tried the Redding Competition shell holders? They vary in thickness to get your cases up into the dies farther. I believe they increase 1 or 2 thousandths at a time. I bought a set of 6 and they worked great.

Another option to think about and remember, calibers are not the most accurate, so get some micrometers to do some of your measurements. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yzrnnKPv6Ho.html
