On the collapsed case from using the Lee die, you had the expander too high in the die. It can happen with any die. A properly positioned expander will only come into play after the case neck has been sized and any excess friction will be pulling on the case, not pushing. What you got could only have been done by pushing on the top of the case. The difference between the ID of the neck portion of the die and the maximum OD of the mandrel is such that there is not enough room to admit the case neck between them. Even if the expander is just below the die neck, the abruptness of the turn require to start into the neck of the die can be a problem. All of this is exacerbated if cases are annealed. I really do enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

A bloody informative video on dies mate. Well done. I got a lot out of it for sure. I have redding, Lee, Forster and Hornady dies and this really helps explain things as to what is happening when you size. Gday from Australia.

I have a similar story with 22-250. I initially purchased a Lee die set with average results. Seeking further improvements I obtained an RCBS match die set and found my group size getting a little smaller. I finally ended up with a Forster die, and found true happiness. Like you, I am a fan of Glen Zediker. After reading his book "Handloading for Competition" I ordered the Sinclair mandrels. Now I can shoot in the .3s. They really do make a difference. I started reloading for 6.5 Creedmoor this summer and immediately purchased the Forster neck bushing / shoulder bump resizing die and micrometer seating die. Quality is not cheap, but it is worth it. I have the Sinclair 6.5 mandrel but was unaware of the smaller neck turning mandrel. Thanks to you I have one on order. Thank you very much for all the testing on concentricity. Saved all of us a lot of work. Garth

+Garth738 thanks for your kind words. That's why I started the channel. I have gotten a lot of help from the community here with advice and flat out telling me I was wrong. Any time I can skip being wrong 5 times, it's a good thing. I try not to say cheap, it's value. You can't put a price tag on a bullseye. At least I haven't found anyone selling them. Match ammo is expensive so the cost of the dies, if you shoot a lot, still isn't that much. At least at this point, I am not sure why I would chose something besides forster. Thanks again.

Thanks, that is a lot of work... Me with 223- Forster, Wilson, Redding, Lee... ZERO run out with a polished Lee sizer and seat with Wilson or Forster.. Lee neck die is the bomb it will make good necks better, a little bit of polishing and not over thinking it. works well for people that don't want mess around with measuring neck wall thickness..

10 years ago I picked 25 pieces of 223 brass for each brand of die and followed them through firing and reloading and firing until they grew too long in length. I measured life and concentricity. To my surprise the Lee Collet neck die is on top most brands in the middle and the Redding type S FL die at the bottom. The opposite of what I expected based on cost and appearance.

I reload several cartridges and just recently 6.5 Creedmoor, What I have found over the years to be the best for case concentricity is to first neck size with a Lee Collet Neck Sizer, and then bump the shoulder with a Redding body die about 1 or 2 thousandths. I consistently get less than .001 with most a half thousandths to the needle on the indicator not visibly moving. Of course this is all done on my CoAx press which I think aids in those numbers as well. Anymore when I go to buy dies, particularly for hunting loads I get the Lee Ultimate Rifle set because it has the collet neck and the crimp die included, The Lee crimp die works great with the hunting loads, I buy a Redding body die, and then a Forster comp seater. For me this process produces match grade ammo every time. For an eye opener check the Factory ELD Match ammo for bullet runout. Your head will explode! 5 thousandths is not unusual and actually common. My finished cartridges are all under .002 and most under .001. I think the biggest shock for me in reloading was when I realized a cheap Lee collet die could out perform my expensive Redding type S dies, and I really liked my Redding dies.
@robertt4814
@robertt4814 5 лет назад
I also get similar results with: "neck size with a Lee Collet Neck Sizer, and then bump the shoulder with a Redding body die " for both .308 and 7mm Rem Mag reloads. Follow the above with either the Redding or Forester seating die and the concentricity is amazing. I get less then or equal to 0.0005 This is of course after spending time prepping the best brass of your choice (Lapua, Nosler . . .). The Lee Collet Die also has a full length mandrel that can be customized to the interior neck size of your choice - I better go buy some extras before they realize what they have and triple the price!!!

I polish all my steel dies with a 800 - 1200 grit emory cloth with a split brass dowel and drill. Smoother the better. I load range brass and use case guages. My 223 ammo needs to fit in any rifle but still like the least runout as possible. Polish the expander plug down to .003 below bullet dia. for firm neck tension on bullet.. Use a Lyman M die to bell case mouth .001 over bullet dia.for easy bullet start in seating. I use Forster seating dies.but the Hornady seater works just as well I'm this application. I get about .002 run out or less in this application.. Custom loading for just one particular Bolt action I use a more precise method of Lee collet neck die and Redding body die.

I've been a subscriber, but this is the most informative video yet. Particularly of interest to me because I have just started reloading for 6.5 Creedmoor. The new Gen 2 RPR needs to be fed properly. Now you have me looking for a Forester FL die and a Sinclair Mandrel. Suggestion: I would be interested to see the results of using LR primers as in Hornady cases, versus SR primers as in Lapua or Starline cases. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hey Dan, Happy New year. Glad you enjoy the content, The video length is a little excessive, but didn't know how else to get the point across. I really feel its a great option, not sure how what could do any better. So I have another video coming soon that only scratches the surface on this, but it starts down this path a little. It depends exactly what you want to know.

I too use the Forster FL sizing die without expander stem. Then use an expanding mandrel in the Sinclair die. I started with the Sinclair carbide turning mandrel which measures .262 and produces a finished size of about .2615. I could not get a consist bullet seating feel with that size. I ordered a PMA .263 carbide expanding mandrel which produced about a .2625 finished size and that gave me a more consistent feel when seating the bullet. There was a very small improvement in ES/SD with the lower neck tension, but I would say it was statistically insignificant.

Hi John I will give it a whirl some day, but for the record .005 runout is not acceptable on my bench. With the Forster I keep it at .001 or less 98% of the time. I really think that the Forster Dies are a far better value than lee, but all anyone seems to look at is the price of admission, not getting it correct the first time.
@garrytalley8009
@garrytalley8009 6 лет назад
John you have a good head on your shoulders. Collet dies are the best neck sizing dies. You could just use Lee Dies and have good bench rest seating dies like Redding or Forster and make great ammo. Not just good ammo great ammo. I have Redding Deluxe Die Sets, Hornady Die Sets, RCBS Die Sets, Lee Die Sets and I can tell you that they all work fine but the more expensive ones don't do anything to make them shoot any better period. There is a difference when it gets to a bench rest seating dies however. That makes a big difference. Redding and Forster make very good ones. The more expensive ones are made a bit better for endurance and longevity, but with good care Lee Die Sets can last too if taken care of . It's more important to get quality brass to load accurate bullets.

Like a lot of guys and girls, it's the 6.5 Creedmoor! I've been reloading many years but I've never did anything reload for hunting only. My question is, Do you really need a match grade die to get precision reloads? I have Forster Ultra Micrometer Seater die and I use Hornady's Custom dies sets both in 6.5 Creedmoor.
@martingagnon4547

I also had the match grade Hornady die set and I think the random run-out comes from the seating die… Again, the Forster seating die is better than the Hornady. Overall Forster is a much better option.

@@BoltActionReloading If you don't neck size, you will never know the advantages of it. Some people can actually neck size a case as many as 20 times the life of the case with a moderate load. Accuracy does improve with fire formed cases. Especially if the necks are turned. And you can't beat that Lee Collet Die for getting that neck straight either. A lot of your run out measurements in this video could be off because the necks are not uniform in thickness. The inside could be spot on and the outside not sol Think about it.

I have to admit that I wasn't really looking forward to this video after reading the title, but this turned out to be one of my favorite videos on the channel and one of the most informative videos of all time. Frankly, I learned A LOT from this video. I have been using the Redding Type-S FL bushing die with a .287 bushing. An inspection of my die interior with a flashlight revealed a lot of concentric circular tool marks running perpendicular to the case axis. Now I know why I have to spend a lot of time lubing my cases with Imperial. By contrast, the interior of that Forster FL die looks as smooth as a baby's backside. The Forster's minimal sizing of the exterior case dimensions, the consistent headspace and minimal runout are really impressive. I do wonder how if the runout results were skewed by the Forster FL die being optimized for your Forster press. Would I see similar results with my less sophisticated Hornady L&L press? I don't know, but you've given me a lot to think about. Thanks!
@BoltActionReloading

+njgrplr2007 glad you enjoyed it. It was way longer than I wanted to make it. I struggle with how much to keep, and how much to cut out. But I thought seeing the run out for yourself is a lot more powerful than simply reporting a measurement. I wonder honesty if I would have bought the press if I would have bought the dies first. I honestly just wished I bought this press first. Hindsight is always 20/20 though.

Its not fair to conclude the best combination is forster die and sinclair mandrel. Have you tested Lee sizing die (without the expander stem) plus the sinclair mandrel ?? It was seen in your video the Lee sizing die w/o the expander produces about .001 runout - same as the more expensive Forster die. So it can be reasonably concluded that using the sinclair mandrel on Lee sized dies produces runout the same as with forster die. Please confirm. Thanks!!

I watched this video 3 times now and am going to buy some new stuff to see if I can reduce my run out. I have been measuring and adjusting run out with my Hornady runout tool for about 4 or 5 years but have not been measuring run out on the unloaded brass. I guess I will start. I have been doing neck turning to reduce run out. It really adds a lot of time to brass prep but does seem to help. I am going to order the expander die and see how much it helps. I have not been able to find Forster f/l 6.5 cm sizing dies--they seem to be out of stock where I looked. I am considering waiting for the Whidden gunworks die to become available. Do you have a place to buy the 6.5 creedmore sizing die that is in stock now? Also, like other viewers, I would like to see if all this extra expense has a significant effect on the accuracy. I would expect so, but that needs to be measured. I know you are thinking this too and no doubt plan a video to test it. Great videos, as always! Keep up the good work.

+wayne Pursell thanks as always. I am not sure the Hornady tools is fixing anything as much as it makes us feel better. That said it his hard to measure this without inducing human error. All I know is we can probably agree on is less is better. Glad to listen to any idea as always. As far as in stock, not sure, but if you were thinking of getting one honed by them you can order straight from forster. Not exactly the cheapest, but if you pay shipping 3 times its likely a wash. Best of luck.

Thanks for the advice. I will do more research on the dies. The custom die sounds great but I would need to tell them exactly what I want. I don't think I know enough yet to do that. Oh well, it is super cold here where I live and it is not likely that I will be going to the range until it gets warmer. That may take a month or two, so I guess I still have time to learn some more. One thing for sure is that the more I learn, the more I don't know even a fraction of what there is to know. I need to read the Zediker book, too.

+wayne Pursell I think you can send them a piece of fired brass as well, but call them. I called them about something completely unrelated and their support was very good. On the book, it's a hard to sit down and read and impossible to take it all in, but it is certainly worth it.

I can't see how the Hornady tool "fixes" anything. It might fix the runout but it has to mess with neck tension. There is no way that moving the bullet around doesn't stretch the brass. Think about it. Something has to move.

I thought I needed the bushing dies because they were “better.” I am now wanting to get the Sinclair mandrel die but I’m confused if I need to buy smaller bushings or if I just take the rod out of them it will reduce the neck small enough that the expander mandrel will be able to open them back up. Also, did you gain better accuracy , ES and SD, or concentricity by going with the .002 neck turn mandrel instead of the .001 mandrels?
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 6 лет назад
Hi Brandon, Thanks for watching my channel. There is a lot to your comment so I hope I get it all. (and keep in mind lots of people will be happy to disagree) IMO - bushing dies are only better for not working the neck as much, absolutely nothing else in my experience (But again this is my experience) You just remove the rod that has the expanding device on it and do 2 separate steps instead of one. (assuming your using a expander ball, if not a smaller bushing might be required. Emphasis on might) USE LUBE! For your own benefit I would size and measure 3 different configurations to see for yourself (which is the most important person to prove it to anyway.) 1. standard die no expanding device, then expander mandrel 2. bushing die, expander mandrel 3. bushing die, its own expander ball. measure them all for concentricity (that is my measuring stick on the bench) If #1 isn't the best I would be shocked. (keep in mind you can buy honed dies from forster to reduce the amount of work on the neck if you like.) I have yet to loose a neck on 6.5 creedmoor (Other calibers will be different!) Also your neck thickness variation will show up at this step, poor consistency in neck thickness will look like bad concentricity. Confused yet? Now for the size of the expander mandrel. It depends, they are $10 just try it out. I have across the board have better results with .002 (turning mandrel) but I also anneal every load. Other report .001 (or even .0015, where to find that??????) but I know some of them do not anneal. I think that this may be part of the discrepancy, but YMMV. Hope this helps feel free to comment all you like, and welcome to the channel. I get lots of great comments if you check out more of my videos.

So I'm new to reloading and I find you to be extremely knowledgeable in everything you say. But my goal is 6.5 creedmoor for accuracy and I have the Hornady custom grade dies. One of my questions is can you use the sinclair mandrel in the custom die? And is there a simple process to make a good bullet without seeming like I need to get an engineering degree? I love your videos and do understand what you say but me doing it??
@BoltActionReloading
@BoltActionReloading 3 года назад
Hi Todd. Keep in mind you should have a goal and if it works good enough then don't worry about the rest. I enjoy the process and that is why I make videos. If you want to use the mandrels it is an extra step in a extra die. But you can just use your FL die with out the seating stem, and then run the mandrel of the size you choose through it.

@@BoltActionReloading thank you for responding, so I would need an extra die to use the mandrel. Got it. I too got involved in reloading because I want to make the best bullets I can make and think that the process can be therapeutic. Pretty busy video. It's easy to get lost. No matter different people with different brass will have a different experience. What is more important than the dies is selecting brass capable of giving you good groups after sizing. On neck sizing anything with a mandrel if true will do a better job neck sizing than anything with a expander ball. It will be truer in alignment and more consistent in neck tension and run out. The design is superior to gain the best end result. Brass that isn't concentric and is made with uneven walls sometimes can't be made good enough to shoot well with any die made period. I have been using Hornady Brass lately because their factory bullets grouped better than some Winchesters I tried and after checking the concentricity it was easy to see why. After resizing and processing the Winchester brass it still performed poorly, all in the brass. The Hornady was fair groups with the factory ammo, was more concentric and reloaded after sizing to shoot better groups than the factory rounds. People are not saying what brass they are using. The fact is the brass really is going to have more to do with ones accuracy than any die combination. A set of Lee Dies with the neck sizer will do as well as any if the dies are in good shape and have not been misused. Competition seating dies are a different story, Redding or Forster work great, Forster are a bit less in cost but just as good. You put a lot into making this video and I applaud you for it. I have reloaded for some time and find simplicity and consistency make the real difference. Choose good brass, do the same for the powder and primers and take the time to test the loads. Splitting hairs on dies won't make that much difference.

Please give me a list of the best setup (everything I need) to load 143-ELD-X on a Dillion 550B press....Forster ultra Micrometer die set, Hornady 143eldx seating stem, what else? I will also likely load some match ammo for the same rifle. Seekins sp10

This is complex and I load on a single stage. It depends in what you decide to use for your process. I have a specific process that doesn't lend itself well to a progressive so I never bothered to get a Dillon's 550 like I originally thought I wanted. Best of luck, if you have specific questions dont hesitate to ask. I know 6.5 guys have done videos about precision on a progressive press, might want to check them out. Btw you cant use a 143eldx seating stem from hornady in a Forster die. No fear though the stem that comes with the Forster seating die works fine with that projectile.

Excellent video and informative ! Thank you. Its funny how Lee dies are hit and miss. In Johnnys reloading bench it was his best or 2nd best when runout tested against 4 other brands. I do love my Forester dies tho. I bought the new Forester neck die sets that come with the 3 neck bushings! Sinclair expanding mandrels are how I have been expanding necks. I completely remove any expander balls/stems from all my dies. I need to do more testing and measuring. As for seating I unfortunately I bought a few boxes of 6.5 A-tip and ELD-M bullets however and nothing but Hornady stems to fit them well. These fit nothing but Hornady dies! Really aggravating. I've see people use JB weld to make a seating die fit a extremely long pointed bullet . I may try that.

I've tried that before, it turn out that the collet don't fit inside and i ruined a piece of brass like moparmadman show us in the end of the video. I've switched on hornady custom grade die, now my tikka is a hell off a gun!
@benjaminkirsch8826

actually I do this with 308. it's tight, but go slow and it works well. I had a hell of a time using the full length sizer with the expander (getting the expander stuck in a couple of cases), I ended up buying the collet die to avoid this. the lee full length sizer does way undersize the neck, I emailed lee about reaming out a full length sizer turning into a body die (a la redding), but they couldn't grasp why I wanted to do this. the redding body die costs as much as a set of lee dies... I use a lee classic turret press. I do find that the collet die sizing the neck gives me much better results when seating bullets, as the necks are sized .002 under, which many consider optimal (you can buy undersized mandrels from lee).
@cthomes57
@cthomes57 6 лет назад
@Benjamin Kirsch all is fine if it's work for you. For making a body die from a lee, why not drill a hole that match the outside off your neck (i don't know the diameter off a .308 once it's fired)? I think it could be possible since you pass in the neck die afterward and don't have to be .001 precise? I didn't know that lee make smaller mandrel, i reduce mine my self with a bench drill press and sharpening stones. I think i have search to do to see if i can find it in france or in Europe all this small things are not stocked by our dealers in general and are almost impossible to buy except at horriffic prices.
@philthy5058
@philthy5058 6 лет назад
I went ahead and tested this with some 223 range brass I picked up. I lubed the brass like usual before running it in the full full length die and then used imperial dry neck lube before expanding it with the collect die. I don't have a concentricity gauge but the neck inside diameter and shoulder bump were consistent and I didn't ruin any pieces of brass.

Unless all that brass was neck sized your measurements didn't really show much. Sorry. Brass isn't all that uniform that the precision measurements would show you anything of substance with so little difference in the dies anyway. I have dies from 4 different manufacturers and don't see much difference as the quality of bullets you can make with either of them. Many a fine bullet has been produced with cheap Lee dies all the way up to Redding dies. The Lee collet die sets with fire formed brass can do as good as anything else on the market. The neck is trued inside where it counts. Nice video but I think you showed with most of your measurements there wasn't much difference with any of them.

i agree the forster is better, not necessarily the better value. i do think that lee, forster, and maybe hornady are some of the best value in reloading equipment. it would be interesting to see the runout with the lee dead length seater die. the AMU (Army Marksmanship Unit), published some articles awhile back about minimizing run out using standard dies. they show you can get total indicated run out down to 0.001-0.003, which is still better than factory match ammo (i've seen articles indicating around 0.005 for factory match ammo). i don't know if you've seen this article by laurie holland (www.targetshooter.co.uk/?p=1750), it's a 3 way press comparison. pretty interesting the run out results, also shows where he measured FGMM ammo and where i got the 0.005 tir. i don't usually reply to youtube videos, but your's are interesting, you test and show your results, good, bad or indifferent. keep up the good work and you've gained another subscriber!

No games to play with stems, or waiting a month plus $16 to ship and hey a working stem. Plus the decaping stem in the sizing die is too big and the machining isn't good, yes it's $4, but I would rather pay the money, not waste time as be up and going instead of trying to get the die to where I expect it to be. Just me though

Concentricity measurement is worthless. Look at what you are actually measuring! Your brass is in contact with the stand in two places so you are measuring the relative concentricity between the the two radii in contact with the stand and nothing to do with the neck!
