Fort Laramie was established as a trading post in 1834. The US Army bought the post in 1849 and created a military outpost. After the completion of the transcontinental railroad, the post lost its importance. it was abandoned and sold in 1890.

The rifles were 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Cavalry Carbines chambered for the 45/70 cartridge

Barracks were nicer there than the ones I was in at Fort Jackson in the 1960s.

If you had to live there over the winter, given the amenities of life in the 1870's, it wasn't that comfortable by our present day standards.

Trapdoor Springfield rifles I believe in 1874 were standard issue.

Actually the first trapdoors were issued to the infantry in 1866, the cavalry Carried various carbines until the 1873s were issued in 1874
