For me in particular, this song basically rubbed me the wrong way, but I also understand where the sentiments are coming from. It haunts me to think there are close friends and families that make it harder for those in uniform to have a clear mind to help protect our freedoms. Join me in picking this one apart and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Fort Minor is the side project of the rapper from Linkin Park. The song was written by Mike Shinoda, actually for his wife and in the perspective of his wife, because he was always on tour, up to 300 shows to this point. He was always away from his family and the same goes for other working people, professional baseball players, truck drivers and so many others who can't be with their families because they have to work, not just the military. There is a longing on both sides. Oh and btw. Holly Brook is Skylar Grey.

So the lyrics aren't about the troops. The song was written from his wife's POV about him going out on tour for his music career. The video was adapted to show more relatable instances of this such as military, death, pro sports, divorce etc. But listen to it again with the concept of about a music career

yes, I can see the application on other areas, but the opening picture of the soldier set the overall tone of the message for me.

@@larryshair Understandable. But the lyrics themselves were made for the music tour situation. The video doesn't necessarily reflect the lyrics if that makes sense. The video is just to show the heartache people go through not necessarily that they feel the way the lyrics are suggesting. That's on Fort Minor for muddying the message

You didn't realize that the male vocalist named Fort Minor is the same one from Linkin Park (Mike Shinoda his real name), and the girl in the song is Holly Brook (Skylar Grey) the girl that Eminem rescued after changing his stage name and featuring her on all of his albums and helping her on her solo albums and becoming great friends.

Weird take. I listened to this song in the POV of a broken home kid. Not having a father around when I grew up much. He wasnt in the military, he was just a cheater b*st8rd and he really did only think about money instead of his family. The point is about losing and thinking and waiting for someone you care about, whatever the reason is. I respect your opinion, but your opinion is kinda showing that you have less empathy toward people who are hurting, whatever the reason is. And it's actually crazy that you think just because someone is become a patriot/hero (in your view), their family cant feel sad and angry about it. And if its SPECIFICALLY about military people, you must be a little psychopathic that the mere idea of them being a hero, we cant be angry with the thought of the possibility of them dead and gone from us forever. So instead of focusing on those "heroes", let the family be sad and afraid and sing about how they feel
@larryshair
@larryshair Месяц назад
Yea, I totally get that and understand where you’re coming from. I think the tone and apparent attitude of coming down on that family member and the things that were said were obviously from a painful place but it’s the last thing a deployed person needs to hear. Yes, it’s painful. Yes, there’s heartache and I very much empathize with the family members but just break apart what was actually SAID in the song and imagine you are the one in the military hearing those threatening words like your family member won’t be there when you get back is a very cruel thing to say. We all have to sacrifice something to live under this protection. The “B” statement is rebuking a person from actually saying those things out loud that can make things even harder for that deployed person. I’m not saying to not have those feelings but it’s not helping that deployed person at all. If anything, it hurts, distracts them and that can be extremely dangerous. We need to do what whatever we need to do to help support our troops. The overall message of this song, from a military perspective, seemed to me to be very selfish to say those things. Hope I’m making sense. Thanks for your comment!

@@larryshair I do understand your PoV and in a perfect world, yes I can agree, we wish we can be supportive about anything that our loved ones want to do (as long as its good, obv). I also agree that ultimatum about leaving deployed soldiers are horrible. But hey, we're just human right? I'm just a little baffled that you keep your mindset that this song is JUST about military and resulting in you not being able to enjoy the song. You're not able to explore the lyrics OUTSIDE of that narrative. I know the MV makes it seems that way and it rubbed you the wrong way but Shinoda didnt write the song JUST about that. You can wiki it. So yea. Thx for responding 😊

Larry, just a heads up, maybe you missed it, but this song/video is not only about military families/military careers. I'm pretty sure if you pay attention at the beginning of the video, the part about the woman with the twins, I *believe* that it's implied that her husband/father of the twins, is a professional athlete - hence being gone during the season.

This is really interesting to me, because I've never seen the music video for this song and have only heard it on audio. And because of that I always thought it was referring to the life of a musician that is always on tour/performing away from family rather than someone in the military. It just goes to show how good song writing it is that it can have such a deep meaning with multiple interpretations.

It’s tough. I was in the Army and deployed twice. I’ve seen it all. From Dear John letters, families losing their loved ones, sweet reunions, all of it. It takes a huge toll on the family, it really does, but it also takes a huge toll on us as the service members. No one would rather see their babies via Skype (if you even have internet, which in most cases, you didn’t) rather than holding their little hands while they take their first steps. The hard truth is that you receive orders to go, there is no choice. Want to quit? You can’t, you’re under contract with the United States Gov’t. My suggestion to all is if you’re thinking about joining, is that you should very much realize what the expectation is and discuss these expectations with your family or significant other if you have one and consider what the consequences would be for your kids. Serving is so rewarding in many different ways, but it doesn’t come without a price.

i know others have said this but the song isnt just about military families. IMO the song is from the perspective of his family while hes gone on tour. but the video has a military family. the wife of a baseball player, and then i think kids where the dad just left.... its about families missing loved ones for any number of reasons. i think the whole trump thing today and the military family opening the video kinda riled you up a bit more than the song should have

I was a little surprised by your introduction, and starting off the reaction I can already see something a bit off that makes that introduction make sense. Seems like you zoned in on the military aspect of it, and thats not really what the song is about. In general, its about how some people feel when their loved ones go away to do something like career, sports, or, yes, military. We can understand the sacrifice, but there are moments we feel resentful and abandoned, especially for a child or sibling that doesn't quite understand why you are away.

There's a movie called The Fountain. The protagonist's wife gets cancer, and he decides to dedicate his life to trying to find a cure. He spends most of his life to find that cure, and ultimately when she...spoilers...dies, he realizes that maybe his time would have been better spent being with his wife. I get your point, and you are right. But, the other side is also right, if we understand it. Yes, you are fighting our freedom, but at times we feel like our freedom is not worth it if we lose you in the process. I don't want 100 years of free solitude. I'd rather 20 years by your side. I think we all need empathy for those that feel like that, whether its right or not. Also, you say you're not trying to minimize it, but end with "don't be a B..." You lost me there. Would have been better to just give your side of it, even if you think the other side is wrong. But, to call people a "b" for having feelings? That isn't it.

There were many clues that this was not about military. One verse states they had an established family already, barbecues and halloween traditions. Another mentions being tired of making up excuses for the one who's gone. This is for those who use a job to run away from their spouse or familial duties such as raising kids, or those who otherwise decide their job is more important than their family. Military spouses don't need to make excuses, they know the schedule and the contract, they just have to wait it out. And somebody who waits until they have young children before joining the military, I hope they went for the right reasons.

The opening scenes set the stage in my mind with the military picture and his family.
@brianacton8463
@brianacton8463 Месяц назад
@@larryshair That first scene with the parents definitely grabs attention but seems irrelevant to the lyrics. The second sounds like a family after a normal breakup. The third seems to be a baseball player with that TV shot and mention of an "off season". They could have definitely chosen scenes that match the lyrics better but I suppose these are more relatable than the traveling corporate salesman. Also, I love your reactions, keep up the transparent honesty.

This is not just about military. It applies really to any "long distance" sort of relationship, romantic or not, that happens due to one's career or other obligations, and how it's hard not only for the one leaving and being alone, but equally to the ones staying with their lives pretty much left on hold. I think you missed a big part of the message because you laser-focused on the military 😅

Great song. I didnt even realize this had anything to do with military families... And the stuff at the beginning... only 1 was about someone that was deployed. "The off season" sounded like her husband is a sports athlete or something. The song felt more like any relationship that become a long distance relationship and its HARD on the ones left at home, whether its for military or career. The ones left behind are forever in a holding pattern and just feel broken. And sometimes it doesnt work out. He's not condoning the breakaway... he's not saying the POV is NOT "a little B". He's just telling it like it is... and it's real because many many relationships fail this way. I feel like you took this ONLY from the perspective of a MILITARY family... but he said "career" not military. So while maybe the story he's telling is about a military family, the sentiment wxtends to any long distance relationship. I felt bad for you that you were so triggered and seemed to have a limited view of the story. As for military overseas... I've always had mixed feelings about it. And i should preface that my dad, his dad, my uncle, his wife... and more family... were all military. But military overseas didnt prevent 9/11. Soldiers who died in Vietnam wasn't protecting America's freedoms... Vietnam wasnt threatening America. Taking out Bin Laden before he could do more harm definitely fits in with protecting our freedoms. And I'm all for helping out our alles fight their battles. Nations need allies. But most wars we've sent our soldiers to die in had very little to do with American freedoms. Not saying we dont belong places, just saying "overseas so that you can enjoy barbecues" is as disingenuous as a parent saying "because i said so". Anyhow... this may actually be my favorite song from Mike Shinoda, probably because I've felt that way for a time in my own 19 year marriage despite it not being long distance.... there was distance in emotions. It didnt end that way but there were times it was in the horizon.

Greetings Chris, Again take love and respect first. I have a 4 song suggestion for you to react. I did ask about one before but I realized I never added any links for that so here's my request again with the link of the specific versions I want for you to experience. 1. So Far Away - Avenged Sevenfold (Official Video) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A7ry4cx6HfY.htmlsi=v-e4ZxvhSH4MTrOq This song is a tribute to the band's childhood friend and founding member and drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan (R.I.P) who died of alcohol consumption. I'll post more backstory in the comment of your reaction video once you upload it. 2. Crawling (One More Light Live Version) - Linkin Park - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sjN-NGsRg9g.htmlsi=Ms0-K5QT69UR0POJ This song in my opinion represents the sheer pain and wounds of Chester's life which started with a xual abuse at age 7 and led to Chester's Suicide (R.I.P) in 2017. You can feel the pain in his vocals. 3. Snuff (Acoustic) - Corey Taylor - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QBK6xymmKHM.htmlsi=r8vM9RsWKd8TWm1F This song represents the sheer pain a person goes through while in love and also shows that love is more likely to be an illusion for pain than happiness. 4. Watch Over You (Acoustic) - Myles Kennedy - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WR4_chcwvoM.htmlsi=rZNxCqFPPgVe8g5w This is a very emotional song that can have a different meaning for everybody but mainly it talks about the concerns about someone who is worried that after he's gone who'll watch over the people he takes care of now! And I think as a father yourself, you'll love this song. I understand you already have a list to go through. I'd be grateful if you could upload these 4 songs within your next 10-20 uploads. P.S: Have a tissue box ready while doing any of these, you'll need a lot to go through all of them... Thanks for reading!
