Fort Ord, June 2018 

I was also stationed there from 1962 to 1965. When I was there it looked like a stationing area for troops leaving for Vietnam. I just got back from Korea when I was assigned to the post and for reasons unknown to me, I wasn't sent to Vietnam? I knew many people who volunteered to go to Vietnam that were part of my unit. I thought they were crazy but a true military man would understand their reason for volunteering. I think at least one of those old wooden barracks should be saved as a part of the history of Fort Ord before its converted forever into parking lots!

Thanks for sharing this. My dad was stationed at the Naval Air Station at Monterey. My parents lived on Segundo Street in Marina and I was born at the hospital at Fort Ord! I just showed my dad this video.

I was stationed there 1984 to 87. Sad to see what's left of it.

Arrived on the bus with a bunch of other civilians in February 1963. Climbed off the bus and the harassment began. I’m smiling now, but it was serious business then. I didn’t like it at the time, but now I am glad for the experience of basic training and then advanced training in field communication. I am glad I never had to use my bayonet skills or climb poles and string wire. But the friendship and being part of a team was invaluable. Hard to believe that training ground is now gone. Appreciate you for sharing and Thank You for your service and time spent my father trained here before heading to Vietnam(65-67) as well his training at Ft Leonard Wood I came across his old address book could vaguely make out what he wrote but he was Co D at Ft Ord was the main writing I could make out besides his name the book has I'm sure been long traveled thru sweat blood tears water and who knows what but I came across your video and I really appreciate you for sharing

Stationed there in 1975 and part of 1976. My barracks was one the now gray painted barracks you seen. I saw the same when I visited in 2015. It was second or third back from that admin building you showed. Delta company 707th Maintenance Battalion barracks in those days.

I must confess that being here and reading all the comments, it brings up old memories and the feelings of being amongst family. I served one year at the old Fort Ord, back on 87-88 after returning from a two year tour, with the 2nd ID in Korea. I was a 12B, with the 13th Eng Battalion. Does anyone knows what became of the officers and enlisted housing? The single family type buildings that the military assigned to the married personnel? I was there from November 1967 to April 1968.

My barracks were, !st. of the first Blue Devils with its sign right out in front of them. I have a picture of it somewhere .

I was at Fort Ord April, 2 1968 for basic training.

Enjoyed your video despite not much to see of the old post there anymore. My first night at Ft Ord was 2/25/64; listened to Cassius Clay defeat Sonny Liston travelling on the bus from Oakland Induction Center on my transistor radio which I had to surrender at Ft Ord. Went to Carmel High, but never visited Ft Ord til that night. Was in C-5-1; shot the M14 and went to Ft Gordon and then Germany, then college, then a school teacher and returned to the AF Reserve Command and retired from military, age 60 and from teaching school. Our barracks at Ft Ord were next to 9th Ave across from PT field (which had a mini PX). Most memorable: Sgt Lopez (one can read storied about him from Korean War). Have returned to area to play golf at Black Horse at Ft Ord, and the old barracks are probably a Best Buy location now, not sure. Regret not ever getting inside the Soldiers Club, but walked around it before it was demolished; erosion would have taken it to sea unfortunately.

i also was in B51 in 1969 sad to see the base being taken down. The new building are for the Uiversity of Califorina. 50yrs ago for me

Almost All the buildings are gone now.

And I have to say it’s sad how they left four-door for so many years with nobody living in the homes and the buildings they could’ve sure help the community by getting affordable housing out there our government really dropped the ball so did the county and state both when it came to acting quickly before the buildings became Rundown and ruined by weather

I was C43 18Nov70. I remember all that your telling us Very Clearly remember......you forgot about the Supply Room (two sets of barracks on either side of it. Also we knew it as the Orderly Room not the office. PS Don't walk on the ICE PLANT ! Remember? Alan Roach

I was there from Mar 79 - nov 81. 6/80th FA. So hard to see this as it was obviously a busy military base back then. I remember getting gear assigned to me at the bldg @ 5:16. But, that was my first and only assignment. Basic training at ft Sill, then I was at Ft Ord the remainder of my enlistment. The ice plants were crazy, will never forget them. Thanks for this video, my barracks arent in this video, but saw the condition of them in another video. so sad to see.

Arrived Oct 28, 1968, got to go home for XMAS and came back to finish Basic and was lucky enough to go to Germany for 2 years after 6 months in Virginia

I neglected to mention that while I was in basic training here on this street, JFK was assassinated. The training didn't stop. We just kept going.

Arrived late May 1972, stayed in on old holding barracks "reception" for a couple of days then went up the hill to H-1-3, Great DI's learned a lot, had too much fun. Thank You Ft Ord for all the great memories. Great memories of quartermaster, new shoes, boots, pants etc... Cattle trucks were effective delivery systems, went to the Salinas Rodeo in them.

I took advanced Infantry training at Fort Old, Ca. in Sept, Oct of 1966. I was there for two months and then moved to Fort Benning, Georgia.

i was stationed at ft ord, from 86 to 90, i was lifegaurd special duty in my last year, i was with hsc, 7th s&t batallion, this sad and disgusting ! clint eastwood was mayor of carmel during my stay, as eastwood was stationed at ft ord in early 50,s, i went back to visit monterey carmel, and went on to ft ord, in 2015 and 16, where did this time go?

I did BCT there sep - nov 1973; I don't know that I'd be able to find my way around if the base was still whole.

Sad to see. I was stationed at nearby Presidio of Monterey 1986-87 and frequently visited Fort Ord. I was assigned to the Fort Ord Hospital, Silas B Hayes 1991-92. We lived in family housing in an area that the Army retained as housing for POM and the Navy Postgraduate School. My wife continued in that housing while I was in Korea 1992-93. They closed the Fort around her. We last visited 2018. Our family housing looks the same. The substandard Enlisted family housing is abandoned and falling into ruin. All the homeless people in San Francisco and Los Angeles but this housing sit empty. The people in Monterey and Carmel would never allow bringing poor people into their area. The Army Hospital is also abandoned. It was not built to California earthquake codes so it cannot be occupied. Nobody is willing to pay to tear it down so it will probably sit there like that forever.

Took basic training there in Aug of 69. Returned in 81, D 2/10 Cav. Went to flight school from there in 1983. Big time memories!

Awesome! I wish I lived closer so I could visit regularly too. Looks pretty peaceful with lots of areas to roam. I ran up that hill by the Highway 1 overpass many many times when I was there. As soon as the video started and I heard the road noise I knew that was Highway 1. It was an ever present background sound when near that side. Not annoying, just very familiar.

Thank you for posting the pictures. Strikes me how I could not get away from Ft. Ord quickly enough in 1968. But now, miss not being able to go back and see the places where my life was permanently changed.
