In this video we explore Fort Rock. This is a volcanic formation from roughly 100,000 years ago. The formation called a 'tuff ring' was formed when the area was a lake. The worlds oldest sandals (~10,000 years) were found in this area. There is a quick hiking loop and some climbing to be done.
Crack in the ground is a similar nearby feature:

When I roamed Oregon I saw the desert west of Boise, the alkily lakes of the SE, Crater Lake, and the Pacific coast. I had relatives that lived in Coos Bay for over 50 years. Thanks for filling in the gaps! Again, the quality and the content of your videos is outstsnding! Thank You!

This was fascinating. The explanation of what we were seeing was clear. The part about the sandals and the close up shots, which detailed the weaving, were just fascinating. Thanks very much for including those. I have an interest in "oldest known piece of clothing type X". I absolutely would have guessed China or Egypt - for known long occupation by people, and dry environments. Never would have guessed Oregon. They were beautifully made as well.

@@MattCookOregon Many people w/RU-vid channels of several years standing look at their older work and see what they'd like to change. Look at it this way, artists and artificers have been feeling that way about their work for at least 5000 years. Whoever made those sandals is probably thinking "I wish some of my later work had survived. I got such much better!" Would love to see what else in that area there is to cover. Very interesting neck of the woods the Pacific NW. Thanks for making your pieces about it. I really liked a spot in one of your climbs where you speak of the connection between a shrubby pine and the bird which eats and is sole distributor of the pine's seeds.

Having stopped for a break on the wave-cut ledges on the south side on bicycle tours ... you can see the lake. As it retreated to a pluvial lake, then to the remnant lakek near Valley Falls, notice the flats on the way are spotted with obsidian flakes from bird hunting for millennia. A new site near Burns dated to >>15ky had a class-3 rapids river running by it, now footprints at WhiteSandsNP push habitation back to 21ky-23ky ago. My tours studied archeology & geology on dirt & pavement ... the roads follow theirs, stop at the tiny store at Valley Falls, they kept me warm returning in bad weather, even a ride to past the snow flurries in fall, the last of the ranchers, really. Great place area, connected to the Black Rock Desert that was 600ft deep, fishing & birds, large game in the hills; the pluvial lakes interconnected to take up the NW 1/3rd of Nevada, the stand lines of drying out, the Northern Pai-Ute lived here till late 1800's. Drying out all mainly from the Warner Range going up fast, 15cm/6" max on the west wall of Smoke Creek Desert, it shot up, so drying out not as much from post-glacial climate changes that came last for both basins. Fort Rock was erupting near the last interglacial period, never visited the museum, knew of the sandals, too far off the highway, only one store is open late in Goose Lake ... barely made it. Next day Fandango Pass, climbing it back, the party campfire was near the top of the haul, where they took off extra teams. Fwiw 🍺
