Death and Erosion at Cape Kiwanda

Cape Kiwanda is the state natural area right at Pacific City Beach. This sandstone headland has seen many deaths. Fences and warning signs everywhere attempt to stop people, but those are often ignored.

This is great! I used to surf and ski the dune out there in High School. At time it was literally us, the dory fishermen and a few locals. No one else. You could just camp on the beach. Pretty amazing. It's such a different scone now, but still a nice place to visit though. Cheers!

Nice I bet the sandstone has changed if you have gone a lot. I usually stay away from crowded beaches, but we spent the day there and it really wasn't that bad.

Looks like the Dog had a great time staying inside the fence, walking through sand, and seeing what's to be seen through the fence. Too bad humans can't do the same. Nice video. I've been there but didn't go up onto the Cape because of time constraints, and never made it back. Good to see it again. Thanks for the take-along.

Yeah not hard to have a good time and stay safe there. I could go without the fences personally but they have to try something.

The teen who died was at a night party with friends. He went to go sit down but it was a cliff side. His friends were traumatized. They saw him sit, then was just gone. Poor kid.

Blows me Away, amazing Video Matt, just outstanding. I never see videos like yours done by anyone. What is your opinion about the following: Do you think these criminal and foolish acts are perpetrated by more out-of-state visitors than native Oregonians? I'll bet the people rescued had to pay a huge fee for their rescue and violations of boundaries, what do you think?
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Mike! Local or out of state I don't see a big difference in accidents/deaths. Some pay a fee, some don't. Search and rescue is a free service but they usually make you pay for helicopter/ambulance. I don't believe in making people pay more for rescue since it discourages them from calling for rescue. But if breaking an obvious rule like a fence, there should be a big fine. Hope your adventure is going well.

I live two miles north of Cape Kiwanda and visit often. I have repeatedly watched the oblivious take unnecessary risks. FYI - I am presently serving on a committee convened by OPRD to review policy for drone launching/landing zones in OPRD properties I am one of two Part 107 certified pilots on the committee, but the committee is heavily represented by birders, hikers, equestrians, etc. - most of whom who have an expressed antipathy to UAV operation in OPRD jurisdictions. We are probably a year away from a final reg being adopted, but I predict landing/launching in state parks/state natural areas will be significantly restricted or outright banned. [I'm just hoping we'll be able to keep the beach open to landing/launching.]
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 10 месяцев назад
Yuck restrictions everywhere. I think they should relax. There are other things that cause much more harm. I also looked into studies on drones affecting wildlife, there isn't much evidence out there. Either way. People won't follow the rules and they won't be enforced.

Fines should be atrocious for these people trespassing and if they need saving and don’t die, should get the total bill and jailtime.
@Reloading20
@Reloading20 10 месяцев назад
Anyone that needs rescue services pays the bill. It's not a charity. That said no need to make it criminal unless they are doing criminal things like those vandals. People are free to explore the world at the risk of their own life.
@MattCookOregon
@MattCookOregon 10 месяцев назад
Rescue is free unless it involves an ambulance, hospital, or helicopter. Other states charge for rescue. It is a tough system to get 100% right. Don't want to discourage people from calling for help if in trouble.

We have sandstone cliffs in Michigan, I've never been there . Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the southern shore of Lake Superior, The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is on Lake Michigan's upper western shore.. Most of the geology of the western shore is sand stone above calcite. An inland lake called Lake Charlevoix which I grew up round about has a south arm and it sits on a basin of grey marl it looks like uncured limestone, there is a ridge of beautiful beach sand on top on east and west shores. The Michigan United Conservation Clubs got together way back before I was born (1953), and got I don't know how many dozens of mute swan eggs and and hatched them and they were fruitful and multiplied. Mute Swans are the largest breed unfortunately they are not native I don't think, there weren't any type of swan let alone shore birds in general. But at any rate if you see a mute swan anywhere in the US they most likely came from this original spot or are directly related genetically to our swans., Not to boast(yeah rite) we have volcanic ruins up here ,a volcanic island called Isle Royal in the Lake Superior basin, very very ancient. But I like your volcanoes better.

Hey you stuck around for another video, thanks! I don't get out much outside of Oregon. One day we will. I am a big volcano fan as we have so many to visit here. Newberry is my favorite, I have a full length movie on here about it.
