“Fortress Falklands” is the first in-depth look by television at the Falklands since the conflict with Argentina.
Reporter Peter Gill and producer Norman Fenton look at the impact on the islanders of thousands of British .troops; of the Services’ wary precautions against the defeated invader; and of the absentee landlords and the problems they create.

There's plenty of oil and natural gas in the Falklands area as soon as sheep industry dries up they will start digging for the oil and natural gas.

Oil exploration has been going on round the Falklands for years already. The oil companies haven't developed it into a profitable business yet, but they seem to have hopes. It doesn't matter too much, because the economy of the islands has diversified since the 80s. The sale of fishing licenses in the Exclusive Economic Zone round the Falklands has provided the Falkland Island Government with a healthy source of revenue - they've invested that, the same way as the Norwegians invest their oil revenue, and the interest has paid for a lot of infrastructure development. There's also a lot of money made from tourism these days, so the Falklands is booming economically. Per head of population, it's now said to be the richest country in the region.

The Falkland wars were definitely about British lifestyle and sheep. It definitely had nothing to do with oil, fucktons of oil. Take your pills citizen and praise the queen. Edit: I will preserve the original comment above to show my error, after only a few minutes of research I can conclude that Thatcher, her party and the lobby behind the parliament at the time could not have known about the resource advantage of the falklands. While yes, it was suspected the falklands had oil and gas since the 50s, the first major exploration of the islands natural resource deposits took place in 98, the war was in 84. Thatcher simply sunk in the polls quite badly and took a gamble on war, a gamble that did pay off. Following the war she won her most decisive vote ever among her fellow MPs. TL;DR: Never trust your teachers.

Hase Id like to apologise I read your first reply wrong. I’m going to assume this was a liberal uni or college teacher who told you this. A free bit of advice almost of liberal teachers only want to indoctrinate you always do your research and make your own decisions.

You know, I wouldn't put it past Boris Johnson to actually pull the plug on the Falkland islanders. It's the kind of moronic thing he'd do.

@P A Russia is the legal successor of the USSR. So let Ukraine get out of Russia. And do not use obscene language, are you a citizen of a highly civilized cultural country? Are you an Englishman? When you were a child, did your parents explain that you cannot use foul language in public?

@@paulcardin6344 Ok, I liked your comment, I think you can answer one question and you will answer it frankly. Can you tell me why the Anglo-Saxons genetically do not regard Russian interests? Anytime, anywhere? Why should we always confront you and hold back you?
