Fortune town is more popular with working people, Central Rama 9 across the street is more popular with tourists. min wage is about $10 a day for manual job, for regular job, I think, $15-$25. malls rent out space for pop-up shops and are regularly rotated, may be weekly, they usually advertise monthly.

If money is not an issue, I want to live in Bangkok. As a Malaysian who is a Chinese descendant, Thailand is my ideal place, where most of the people there are friendly, polite, tolerant, humble, not religious extreme and not racist. They accept people with open arms.

For me, I’m Thai. My basic salary is $4.4k (Senior Mgr in MNC with 20 years experience). I’m good with $1.5k/month for food, petrol miscellaneous things like groceries, facilities and to support family. I have no kid, no debt, car and house already paid off. For other expenses like car insurance, car maintenance health insurance, approx. $3k/year. I’m more than happy living in Thailand with this amount of earnings but just needed to control an unnecessary expenses (keep simplicity) and save enough for life after retirement at the age of 55 with $430k should be good enough to survive for entire life in Thailand.

I was just in Fortune town this past weekend, there are also a lot of shops that sell guitars, high end audio equipment, and quite a few record shops. People’s expenses in Thailand wildly varies, my wife and I live off of about 2,000 USD a month, but we rarely go out and have no house or car payments. My only main expense is health insurance, but that is about a tenth of what I was paying in Hawai’i, but I’m getting better health insurance here in Thailand.

That was an interesting vlog, with some food for thought. However, I think they'll be easy to answer. Here we go. Question/Answer 1. How much Thais make? Ans: It depends, but say Doctor can make around 300-600K in the hospital. For example, they make 700 to 1200 Baht per patient visit. A visit usually last 20-30 minutes. At the opposite end, laborers in construction make 400 Baht per day (wages in Thailand calculated as per day). Janitors can make more than construction laborers. Janitors make 15-20K Baht per month. General office workers with no experience at all will make 20K per month. Middle Management in businesses make around 60-80K Baht per month. High Level Managers (i.e. VP and Department Head) will make around 200-400K per month. While Top Level Management in big businesses make over 500K per month. Really well known companies pay up to 1M Baht per month for such high caliber people. While Middle Management can have fringe benefits like a position based car fully paid for in all respects, they are regular brands like Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mazdas. Top Level Managers usually are offered BMW or Mercedes saloon size vehicles with a driver and again, all expenses paid. Teachers in Thai schools make 20-30K Baht per month, while teachers in international schools make 50-80K Baht per month. 2. How much is needed for retirement in Thailand? Ans: Here, the ownership of your own housing real estate makes a huge difference. If you do own (no payments needed to any lender) your own house/apartment, then around 25-30K Baht per month is comfortable. This will allow you to save for maintenance and repairs. However, if you don't have to worry about these expenses, then 15-20K is enough. I want to say that you will need to understand that only one room has A/C on at any one time. If you have more rooms with A/C on, someone will need to help pay for the electricity. 3. Where would you live if money isn't an issue? Ans: I am Thai. I would retire in an area of Nakornrachasima called "Kaoyai". This area is 2 hours northeast of Bangkok. The area is mountainous, but the mountains are not too high, and they are smooth mountains. This means they are not new mountains that are very tall like the Rocky Mountains. Kaoyai area has many farm land which usually raise livestock, grow corn, tomatoes, and other crops requiring cooler climate. In this area, the temperature is usually around 25-29 degrees celcius in the daytime in the rainy season (May-Oct) and 15-26 degrees celcius in the daytime in the winter (Dec-Feb). There are few housing projects there, but what is there is luxurious to ultra-luxurious and is reflected in the price (around 15-50M Baht per house). However, as a Thai citizen, I can buy land if I can find it and develop as a house. Besides farms, luxurious residences, and land, there are only resorts of different types. None of the resorts however are low-level type. I would retire in Kaoyai so I can be comfortable and also visit my children, who will all be in Bangkok, unless they go abroad. I also would choose to stay in Thailand because Bangkok is an international flights hub that I like due to many many low fairs to countries in East and S. E. Asia. I can go to Japan easily, a place I love to visit repetitively when I want to experience a white winter with my family. 4. Decorated mall based food stalls which occupy the common grounds of the shopping complex are usually set up on the weekend. I've been walking in malls in Thailand for the past 30 years and I've never seen a catalogue specifically stating when these food fairs will be set up. The best I've seen are signs put up in and around the mall. 5. What does it cost to raise up a child where you live? Ans: My answer will concentrate on the major cost for this, that is education. It depends on the kind of school you want your child to attend. For Thai schools, they cost 15-20K Baht per semester in a two-semester year. However, these schools concentrate on learning everything in Thai. There is very little English. These days they offer once-a-week Chinese courses as well for some schools. For international schools, English is the main medium of instruction, with Chinese as the second language requirement. International schools cost around 140-800K Baht per year for a two-semester year. 5. Would you consider changing career during your mid-life years? Ans: For me no. However, there's a good reason for this. Changing career in the middle of you working life or when you're already looking forward to retirement is not a good idea. It is very risky with the uprooting an already setup occupational regime. Your age, being over 40 makes it an unwise choice, unless you are guaranteed a stable position. Also, making a new business will require dipping into your current assets, to make things worse. So unless lady luck seems to be pushing me in to a business, I would stay away from a money hungry project. 6. Have you been to Central Rama IX? Ans: I have been to Central Rama IX. However, I usually only go there when I'm looking for toys or attire for my daughter. OK, I just wanted to mention something about the Thai BBQ Pork (or "Moo Ping") you guys seem to really love. We have 3 kinds of Thai BBQ pork skewers, or "Moo Ping" in Thailand. There's the lean pork one, fatty meat pork one, lean meat pork one, lean mean alternating with fat slabs one, and the fatty one, the one you guys enjoy very much. Actually I like the fatty one too. These are of the kind that can be bought in bulk (ready-made skewers) at Makro Cash 'n Carry, just like Costco in the US. I feel I've been super comprehensive on this reply to the questions you posed in this vlog. I hope my answers at least amused you. Cheers

Hi Caroline and Anthony! I heard that minimum wage in Bangkok is around $12 USD per day. I plan to retire in Thailand in a few years and I gave myself a budget of $3K USD per month or 102K Baht. I can comfortably live off $2K USD but I gave myself a cushion of $1K USD for unexpected expenses or last minute travel. When I turn 62 yo, I can collect social security benefits which will nearly double my budget but that is overkill! I will save the extra money to later build my dream house on the beach somewhere near Hua Hin or Cha Am or Prachuap Kiri Khan.

minimum wage 400 baht per day. Doctor in Thailand makes about 60,000 baht per month (less than $2k usd per month). Average salary in Thailand is 30,000 baht (less than a $1000 usd). Less than 10% of Thai make over 100,000 baht per month. If you have $5000 usd per month, you would live like a King in Thailand. Even $2,000 or 3,000 usd would be enough to live in Thailand comfortably. If you have a house and car paid off in Thailand, $2,000 or $3,000 would be a comfortable living with saving for traveling as well.

Basically, doctors with 3+ years experience income would be at least 150k-200k Baht/month. If we talk about the overall cost of living, I see that someone has answered you. But let me go into a little more detail. The income depends on the job you do. In Thailand, doctors, lawyers, and engineers are the highest-paying jobs on average. Civil servants earn less but have the best welfare. And the starting salary also depends on the qualification. And getting a job depends on the school you graduated from. But it is an unspoken standard. It has been ingrained in values for a long time. It is up to the person you ask to accept it or not. Which leads to your next question about the cost if you have children. The cost of raising children is not as expensive as the price you have to pay for the education system for your children. If you are a Thai citizen, you have the right to send your children to study for free until they finish high school or grade 12. But it is a government school and you cannot choose the school. If you want to choose a famous school or want your child to study in an international school. As far as I know, international schools cost an average of one million baht per year. Although this value may have changed in this era, it definitely still exists.
@ChovyTravel
@ChovyTravel Месяц назад
Thanks for the details! I guess it’s similar to US (standards & government jobs) I guess school can be one of the biggest expenses in Thailand if you send the kids to international school. 😲

One life time is to short, unfortunately all of us ain’t a genius born or raised business clever to make enough income or become successful from a young age. Most of all we wanted to grow old slowly with mentally intact and less to regret about. We truly understood why you both also moved to Thailand and it is not only because of cheaper costs of living. For us in this sense = happiness levels count is the real worthwhile reason and we experienced this ways more in the Thai way of life. A happy go lucky and learn to let go of something you can’t change or is not within your control in the Thai culture helps keep our mind at peace. The competitiveness, being judgmental and focused only on oneself selfishness in today world seems to happen less in Thailand within their society. We feel the multi verse where true natural beauty met with adequate accessibility in infrastructure from place to place isn’t an issue when visiting Thailand. Furthermore- diversity between old and new where east meets west on many occasions = the Thai has got it so right into perfect harmonious and this is what making Thailand such an interesting country to explore. A rare balance that we don’t often see in other mainstream rich and poor countries in differences. We lives in Tricities, Washington 3months a year and let’s say the Columbia river never flows in anything exciting ever. For 5 months of the year - We are living in a country that have rich streets and poor streets being divided in treatments, never mind that differences between a good town or bad town because of the local council authority in running. For forty five years in the Uk and we can feel this country going year by year has certainly lost its integrity in making their citizens become better together as a country. Particularly on immigration issues going on right now. As for the rest of the four months - we travel with work, mostly between Poland, China, or Australia. So we are quite accustomed to some of the east Asia and Southeast Asian ways of life and etiquette. We can definitely see that many old traditions in Thailand existing coherently well with the new trends that keep coming in with less commentary commotion on how things should be, which also isn’t as a strong subject matter in Thailand and compromising point can be met if need be. Local Thai communities are awesome even though we heard that the Thai political together with their party system is rather unstable and there is a lot of corruption going on from within. However, the basic human rights and freedoms values are still readily more reasonable. Muslim in Thailand have a shop setup right next to the pork store is a common sight in many Thai markets. We also love the larger than life characters of third Agendas spirits acceptances within in the Thai culture. Sex, looks or race doesn’t define who you are and focus solely on the good actions of a person is highly valued. In Thailand This is a great momentum currently going on amongst the new and older generations. Let’s say-It’s normal to have a male gay teacher, government officials, doctors, nurses wearing fully women clothing in school or working establishment even if they didn’t yet get the sex change surgery. We don’t even see this as normal in the new modern cities around populated China. When traveling through the Southeast Asia mainland for holiday through Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia, Myanmar visitors like us have been strongly advised to avoid saying anything that criticizes their local government in a bad way. When going across to Malaysia or Singapore we don’t feel the authenticity characteristic of mesmerizing charisma whether in the charms of tradition, infrastructures, or the people. The alcohol are pretty expensive because of religious beliefs too in term of leisure life balance. Till date we still don’t get this concept and how the two connected. If you don’t drink alcohol it doesn’t really matter if it’s in front of you or not, so how come alcohol is linked to religion in pricing. Kuwait is also similar to Malaysia in alcohol ridiculous rip off pricing but they are even more expensive and prohibited unless through western chain hotels licensing agreements. Though we pay high respect that both Singapore and Malaysia is leading the economic development in the Southeast Asia, particularly their ability in semiconductor and microchip high investment that is actually better than many European countries. Therefore, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia may be a place more suitable for people with high achieving goals plan in life around Asia region. As for us, we have no capability and no more successful drive at the age of 54. We are only looking for simple happiness with strong stability in fitting with our budget that doesn’t restrict what we can spend on or stress us out just because we are eating out on a daily basis. A place that can provide a good healthcare for when we are older and a place full of arrays in activities to keep us going. Happiness with less stress in a good life balance of living within our means undoubtedly is not in the western world = So we see Thailand as perfect place to be in. We do like Philippine and Indonesia particularly in Rachar ampat for scuba diving and the beaches. However, beach life ambience and activities available in these two countries are not thing in comparison to what is on services in Thailand. The best for us is the food culture in Thailand that just keeps giving your tummy a good dream. We are also looking forward to get a home in Thailand within the next five years around khanjanaburi province or Khao yai. BKK is lively but the toxic pm density is something we are not looking forward to get along with. Congratulations to you both on reaching 10k 👍 ❤😊

in thailand typical restaurant worker would earn anywhere from 350-400 thb or roughly 10-11 usd. if one were to eat at a typical local street stall, it would cost roughly 45-65 thb a dish ot roughly 1.2-1.8 usd the dish would cost roughly 12% of the daily income. one portion of a typical noodle bowl in thailand would fill you up somewhat like a slice of nyc 1.99 usd pizza. lets make it 2.5 usd including everything. now that's 2.5 usd per 180-220 usd restaurant workers' daily earning which makes it 1.38% for roughly the same amount of food. it's expensive to be poor in thailand.

I used to work near Fortune and bought almost all my PC and electronics there, so it’s nostalgic to see it! Sushina there is a bang! It’s an affordable sushi place that was an internet craze with a very long line a few years ago. Worth visiting for their Volcano Donburi. 😋 FYI: Fortune is the last IT mall in Bangkok. There used to be a trinity of IT malls: Pantip, Fortune, and Tawanna. But most of them were dead and have changed into something else while Fortune still survive. For the salary: the official minimum salary in Thailand is 15,000 THB per month, but not many workers actually reach that. For office workers, I think the average is around 20-30k. 50k and above is considered a very high income, usually for senior or manager roles. Doctors and executives could earn around 100k-200k++.

You guys asked a lot of questions in this video and don’t know where to begin. I do know Thai minimum wages is about 300 baht per day, and many do take on second jobs or have side hustle. To live in BKK comfortably for two is about $2000 for us, and we use our return from our investment to pay our rent, so basically our rent is FREE! You can invest in dividends stock and receive income on regular basis. Never buy property in foreign land, rent is cheap in BKK, if your circumstances change, just pick up and leave instead of struck with a property that you can’t sell. I will leave other questions to others viewers.

Raising kid roughly have the same basic cost. Diapers baby food etc etc. Which is like feeding another person not too expensive. What makes it different in each family is Their education and the luxury stuff. Some small numbers of family raise their kid so good they don't cry for expensive stuff. And they know reason. But majority of Thai kids are quite materialistic nowadays. our education systems are broken and teach the kids to be very competitive and very comparison toward others that are better. That's why the rich choose school that are private and have much better socials and education level.

@@ChovyTravel If you already feel comfortably spending here and there and spoil yourself now and then comfortably, when the time comes to having kids will not break the bank here in Thailand. Good Public school exist, and easily find in the city of Bangkok. Higher education is quite affordable too, and good student will find that Scholarship is quite easy to obtain. I've got all scholarship on all my higher education both Bachelor and Master. It lessened the cost of education by like 90 percent. Scholarship in Highschool level though... I haven't heard about it. Most foreigners, especially US, find Thailand very affordable, specifically, Healthcare. Our Meds are produced in quality by well established pharmaceuticals. Price regulated well by governments. I used to work as an office worker for 22 years and then one day I quit because I no longer had the passion to continue. It's not as boring as you think because it's a newspaper, every day there's different news. I learned how to be an employee, how to work with many people at many levels. There is no need to take care of taxes or manage many things except for our own. I have a fixed income, although it is not much, but it makes me happy to some extent, because people do not live for money. New doctors could earn 60k-100k/mth but experienced specialists could make more than a million bht/mth. If you have passive income $5,000/mth/couple, you could have a decent lifestyle. I’d say a B+ level. Of course if you want to live like an A level in Bangkok such as always eat in nice restaurants or hotels, you might multiply by 3-4.

I'm Thai and I love watching you two walking around and exploring those areas. Eventhough I live in Bangkok but I still havent been to many places in your videos. So thanks to you guys for making so much effort. And I love that in each video, you bring up some interesting topics to discuss. One topic I would like to know is health insurance of foreigners. I know that cost of medical expenses in Thailand is cheaper than in the US. But is it for general health issues? I feel like if you have cancer, the treatment would cause a fortune here, especially in private hospital. Is it still cheaper or better off for foreigners to retire and possibly need lifesaving treatment?
@ChovyTravel
@ChovyTravel Месяц назад
I heard in US, average cost for cancer treatment is $150,000. I don’t know how much it is in Thailand. Would you say it’s similar or cheaper in Thailand?

@@ChovyTravel wow even top tier hospital here cost less than $150,000. I think overall cost would be around 1miliion baht. But I guess it depends on which kindof cancer treatment.

US Healthcare is definitely not a joke. It’s really expensive. Very True! It does really depend.

In the eyes of the locals, Fortune Town is the location to buy technical equipment, including digital cameras, laptops, computer components, and a wide range of other devices. In addition, there are numerous stores selling phones, gaming consoles, software, high-end audio hardware, as well as pirated CDs and DVDs within the mall.

Retail stores in Thailand indicate the density of the city. If you are a small village far from the city, the population may not be 100-200 people. The place to exchange goods is small shops and small markets. But when the village starts to expand to a population of more than 500 people, the first thing that will follow is convenience stores such as 7-11, mini bigc, cj store, lotus express. But when the population starts to move to 1,000 people, modern trade and wholesale department stores will follow, such as Lotus, BigC, Makro, Go wholesale. But when the population moves to the city level, there may be a population in that area of about 5,000-10,000 people. Large department stores will come to invest. It shows the potential of the middle class and entrepreneurs are starting to increase. The department store level will start to be more serious, such as Central, The Mall, BigC and Lotus flagship branches will appear to increase the options to create a lifestyle. It is a gathering place for communities of all ages. You will start to have famous restaurants. You will start to have many counter bands and international band products to buy. But when your city moves to the population level 100,000-500,000 people or more. What follows is that luxury malls will start to invest to increase the High Society Life Style even more. And it will not be just one mall. They will build it as a shopping mall area like what you see in Bangkok in Sukhumvit, Ratchaprasong. The creation of a mall is not to demolish the old ones, but to open new ones to enhance the original. And luxury malls are not for Thai people, but they are also for shopping tourists. And the new trend is to create mixed-use. It will be like a complex city consisting of condos, department stores, community areas, such as night markets, public parks, and office buildings. What you see here is not the highest level of creating a life style because the highest level it should be is an entertainment complex city, which will consist of casinos, 5-star luxury hotels, parks, large theme parks like Disneyland, sports stadiums, racetracks, art galleries, luxury department stores competing against each other, and many more. There is no entertainment complex city in Thailand right now, but it is possible that it may happen in the next 2-3 years. It will be created as a small city surrounded by what we have now, as you can see and experience. 😂😂😂

Thailand has wide inequality gap problem just like in the USA. The rich keep getting richer. The poor are really poor. But there's still many opportunities in Thailand. My grand parents immigrated from China. They had nothing but worn out clothes, no money at all. But now most in our family are successful. If you work hard, live below your mean, keep finding a way, you will find something that works. My dad was doing some dormitory business as a side job. It's like apartment units but no kitchen. The rent is very low, only 3500 bahts a month but the rooms are big. We have over 200 units and they're paid off. After dad passed away, my mom still lives pretty well off that income. Basically the way to get rich in Thailand is only from finding some profitable businesses or investing in real estate (or becoming politician 😂). But if you work in a professional field and earn 60k, that's still aplenty because most Thai people can live under 15k a month. Still we have enough to save and invest in something to grow our portfolio. But if you earn 20k you still can save money if you live frugally but your options will be less so you probably need to find a side job. When I'm retired I'll move to Chiang Rai. The weather is kind of cooler. The landscape is so beautiful. The cost of living is really cheap. I would have a garden that I can grow vegetables. It's such a beautiful place! You guys should visit it some day :D How much money do I need to retire in Chiang Rai? I think 15K is enough but I will need around 30-50k more per month for the travel fund (locally and internationally).

Wow! That’s awesome! My your dad Rest in Peace and happy that your mother has regular income coming in and is financially secured 😃. We do want to eventually visit Chiang Rai for sure. Our plan is Chiang Mai first and then work our way up to Chiang Rai 😁. What’s Chiang Rai known for besides the best pineapples in the world? 😅 Icic! That’s a fair budget. Thank you so much for sharing! Really appreciate it! 🥰❤️🫰🙏
