40 will always be relevant and "alive" regardless of what the majority of sheeple say about 9mm and 45acp! People carry what everyone else carry because they're unable to think for themselves and too lazy to look at numbers and tests. 9 and 45 can't touch 40 ballistic capabilities. This is my EDC, woods, and hunting ammo. I took my biggest buck with this ammo at 15 yards. It's hotter than most 10mm these days. I don't doubt it would put down a black bear.

@@DrQuagmire1 The original 10mm loads were a 170 gr JHP at 1400 FPS.and a 200 gr FMJ at 1200 FPS. Of course, this performance was out of a 5" barrel. Very few loads today achieve this other than from places like Buffalo Bore. It is performance that the 40 S&W can not achieve no matter what the 40 boys want to believe.

The 40S&W is no joke. Paul Harrell proved yrs.ago that it can easily out perform 45acp. Which kinda disappointed me as J. Browning's 45 is my fav.

Have you tested the S&B XRG handgun loads? The copper HPs look like they should do well. I have some, but have yest to try them beyond paper. I keep planning to take my G-22 afield to test them on a hog, but always have my EDC and forget it.🙄 Will have to plan that G-22 hunt as the weather cools.

Anyone who has an understanding of ballistics, bullet sectional density understands the .40S&W has never been obsolete. The 10mm fan-boys who have never used real 10mm ammo will, of course, argue the point, that's fine, you'll not change those minds.

I'd you hand load, as I do, my 40 has been putting the 10 in the rear view mirror for quite a while, the 10 is now just a longer case for the most part, like a 300 winny vs weatherby.

I have to agree that this is a perfect self-defense load for the 40. The velocity + bullet weight make it nearly identical to the average 357 Mag 158 gr ammo from Remington, Federal & Winchester from a 4'' barrel. Those loads generally have a 158 gr bullet at 1200-1250fps

155gr in .40 is a VERY effective load when run at 1200fps or hotter. Federal's Hi-shok, Magtech Blue Box JHP, Winchester Silvertip, Speer's Gold Dot and Federal's HST in 155gr ALL perform very, very well in 2 legged critters.

1980s bullet tech still performing today. XTP can do it all from defense against two legged and four legged threats. They also have a short OAL and a smaller hollow cavity than most modern JHPs. Making them feed any virtually any gun extremely well!

Speer stopped making their 40 S&W 155gr Gold Dot loading, which was one of my favorite Forty loads. I don't like XTP because they're highly dependent on high minimum velocities for proper expansion. However, it looks like Underwood has loaded their 40 S&W 155gr XTP spicy enough to ensure the XTP consistently expands. I'll probably buy a case, based on your review.

Everybody has their favorites. In my case I'm going to stick with my Slick Willy Era single stack S&W 4058 after a brief affair with the 9 Minimal. It made my head hurt, to think that is, but I realized that ANY 9 Minimal MUST expand to be anything approaching an effective defensive round while .40 caliber and .45 caliber bullets make bigger holes, to start with, down range where it counts even if they DON'T expand. While I don't currently load my trusty old .40S&W with Underwood ammo, your video has pushed me to at least give it a go. Excellent video as usual! Keep 'em comin'!

This helps. I recently picked up a G29 and I handload the 155g XTP at around 1290 fps to help manage the recoil rather than a hotter load. This helps me see what the terminal performance and penetration is likely to be. I am using this for when the wife and I are cycling in mountain lion country.

No doubt about it. Underwood is some top notch performance. Great test and commentary. Yes 100%, me too either barrel length performance is excellent and is great to see. Agree with you Tools. Absolutely Outstanding! Great performance. I still carry a 40 EDC. I started carrying the 155 XTP in a handload out of a CZ in 40 in the late 90s. It performed well in my crude tests back then. I did switch to 155 Gold Dots some years later because expansion was a bit better. But I have been all over the place on carry options the past few years. Well done as always. I wouldn't hesitate to carry these in any of my 40s

Back several years ago Remington loaded their htp loads spicey like these and many law enforcement agencies used them including border patrol. I think the standard was 1250 out of a 4” barrel. Either way they were known as a potent man stopper for many years. I think they still make them but they are watered down a bit these days. Great test though!!!

I really like the 40S&W. The Glock 23 was my duty pistol for about 14 years. Ater retirement the Glock 27 became my concealed carry gun. Occasionally I get to go hog hunting here in Texas. I usually use a Marlin in .357 magnum, but my backup is a Glock 35. That 5.3-inch barrel helps that 40 caliber bullets move out....

You’d love my new Gen 5 Glock 22, I put a 5 Oz tungsten slug weight in the handle, a 5 Oz tungston guide rod for more weight and big surefire flashlight for more weight, Glockstore 3.5 pound trigger connector. It’s my only Glock that has never jammed even once

Keep up the awesome .40S&W content. Love it! My first pistol was a G23 that I’d bought in the late 90s, still have it and was carrying it last night. Since then I’ve picked up several other .40s including a G27 (Thanks for including the G27 in the test). I have been thinking of picking up 9mm conversion barrels but I think I’ll keep them in .40.

You can get a cheap G23 conversion barrel for $50, which also fits the G27. Extar makes Glock pattern 9mm mags for their carbines and they are very reliable and cheap. A 5 pack was $45 last I looked.

I have a Glock 23 sitting at my ffl I just can’t get the time to get there and get it. It’s an LE trade in. The Glock 21 I got was like a brand new unfired pistol for $329 with night sights and 3 mags. That’s a hell of a deal. I am now on the hunt for the best 40 s&w round for self defense

I roll my own 155XTPs for the 10MM @ Just over 1400 FPS. Pretty manageable out of the G20 and very controllable from the G40.

Awesome test! My summer personal carry round, in my gen 4 glock 23. Wishing one day you'll test my winter carry round. Buffalo Bore 180 grain +p gold dot. I've never seen anyone test this round & your my favorite to watch. Their not a cheap round but maybe I'll might the bullet, so to speak & send you a box to test. Lol

This (or the 135 grain with the Nosler projectiles) is the ammo I carry in my Shield 40. Currently it's these 155s. Shield has a slightly shorter bbl than the 27 so I expect I am getting a little less velocity (maybe 50fps less?) but, nice to see these tested in a subcompact. Thanks for the review.

Older Underwood always exceeded advertised velocity in all calibers even with 4” barrels. I still have some 10mm in 155 gr that averages 1561fps out of a G20. Case bulging could be why they’re not as hot anymore. I use Storm Lake barrels which have tighter chamber support. Always enjoy your content.

Ive always said .40 and 10mm should have been standardized around a lighte bullet, like 155 or 165gr.

Great video as always, I am amazed how the g22 faster round penetrates less than the slower round. Shocking result. I see the extra speed does more to the front of the bullet. Making it penetrate less.

I had to see this on the flat screen. My .40 is very heavy stainless with a 3.4'' barrel. A lot less ''rowdy'' than the poly pistols. It looks like Underwood and HTP get along pretty good. Other manufacturers are iffy. Too many short sheet on the powder for me to buy an HTP round. Thanks for the test.

The second one looked like it stopped for a minute. Cause it skipped a line. Also, the first firearm that I bought was a smith 40 and I still have it to this day. But great testing as usual.

Around 500 ft-lbs whenever it hits the target. Not bad. 550-580 ft-lbs out of the barrel.. Not bad 40cal, not bad.

Underwood uses a Beretta 96 with a 5 inch barrel for testing their .40 cal

You may have already done the Underwood 150gr. Nosler. But that one is quite impressive in the 40 also. And it is even more impressive out of the 10mm. It does tend to be a bit short on penetration out of a full size 40 and 10mm because it's expansion is so aggressive.

Always stuck to middle weights in 9/40 the G26/23 only two you’ll ever need 115/24/35g and 155/65g for expansion/penetration But definitely 9/40 FPFMJ/underwood penetrators 115/140g for 💨🦌🐗🐻over 10mm for capacity/availability

I love Underwood ammo. I don't run .40, but I do carry their 9mm 90gr Xtreme Defender Platinum, along with HST 124 +P. Nothing better, IMO.

Thanks for showcasing this ammo. I just bought my first 40 S&W and this is one of the rounds I was thinking of carrying. The other is the Underwood 180 Nosler ASP. Maybe that can be the next round you test! 😉

Howdy Tools 😊 I still hv a good feel for my 40s&w issued in the 90s and carried till 2006 when I retired. But if I still had to my Model 28 was a beast in nickle. Rowdy but nothing like the 29. It shot well till the wheel guns got replaced for Glocks. Be safe brother 😊

Hmm. Wonder what it would do out of the Ruger PC Carbine in 40S&W? I have a G27 mated with that Ruger. I'm a big fan of the old Cowboy ways of mating a pistol and a rile that uses the same ammo. Even better when they can use the same magazine. Cheers!

Reminds me of the Winchester in 40 TAP-FPD that you can't get any longer, but a bit hotter. That's about as fast as a typical 9mm 124 grain +P round will go, if not a little faster, and it's 31 grains heavier! XTP's have always favored more penetration, and that's pretty much perfect. Thanks for another great test!
