Indeed I don't think they preserve well from that location but you don't know until you try

@@fossiliferous the local area has bison teeth and tree roots... The daughters at that age where mates become priority... I may have to start camping further afield

@@fossiliferous you find some, you miss some. That's just how it is, when I was there about 2 years ago I was lucky enough for a layer of soft gray clay/rock to be uncovered it was full of pyritic ammonites! They were much easier to extract then from the normal white stone, because in comparison with the gray clay the fossils were way sturdier. The problem with the white stone is that the fossils are almost the same hardness than the rest of the stone.

@kingofcoocy yes I think you probably found the gault clay. I wasn't sure what I was looking at with this at first as I thought the grey layer was mushed up grey chalk but actually the gault here is a lighter colour to that of Folkestone. Next visit will be much more successful!

@@fossiliferous Good to know! it really depends on what is exposed at the time you are there, I was there about 3 times and only once was the Gault clay exposed.
