Fossils, forraging and after floods: a woodland and river walk.

Filmed during lockdown, Spring of 2020; this is a walk and talk through the woodland at Hardcastle Craggs, West Yorkshire. With a bit of mill history, some fossil hunting, rock hopping, foraging, and even a mudlarking find or two.
It's a little bit experimental, with a few bits of silence from me; just nature sounds and wonderful light.
I hope you enjoy this video. If you do, please give it a like, a subscribe, a comment, a share... whatever you feel comfortable with. Suggestions, comments and criticisms are all welcome.

This was just the most amazing walk. I am physically unable to traverse the trails of my youth. I used to be an avid hiker until arthritis took my knees. I so miss getting off the beaten path to make my own way. Thanks so much for taking us along a lovely Sunday hike, beautifully narrated by nature and your soothing voice.

A wonderful amble through the English countryside! I am continually in awe of all the stone work - seemingly endless miles of amazing stone walls & toe-stubbing cobblestones. If not for these, your woods could very easily be my western Washington State woods....until a house or town comes into view and I'm very certain I'm no longer in Washington! Thank you for a lovely scenic hike and bits of history!

Tom I enjoyed this video immensely :) I could go for an hour or two long video of you walking along through creeks and streams and giving your history of the area . There is nothing I like better than the sound of water bubbling through the rocks as it meanders it's way toward where-ever it is going. I like the birds ,the branches in the and around the water ways and I love the stonewalls and trees too. You have a very soft voice that lends itself well to this kind of video :) Thank you :)

I loved your description of the jump as being successful in “ a flailing, zero-panache kind of way”. Thank you for the walk. I have been a tourist in the UK. While it’s wonderful, sitting locked-up in a bus full of strangers passing through beautiful places is rather unsatisfying. I’d much rather see a district on foot, smelling the earth, hearing the birds, and feeling the sun on my face. Your videos are as close as I can get at the moment, and are greatly appreciated. Have you ever thought of being a local guide for visitors?

Tom, I positively am addicted to your videos and also fascinated by the topic of"public paths" that go thru private property. Here in the states no one can go on private property. There are records in Surrey in the mid-1400s of my direct ancestor George Stoffolde (Stovall) being hauled into court SEVERAL times for "blocking a public path". He insisted he had the right as it was "his property". I guess he was about 200 years too early and on the wrong continent. Eventually, the fines must have drained him to the point where he has no further records for the same offense.

When I was around 8 or 9 we lived in Berkshire for a year while my father went to RCAF staff college. (1963) I loved being in England more than any other place we lived. The dales are truly a wonderful place to walk, the dry stone walls are so beyond amazing. You are very lucky to live there and there is nothing more pleasing to me than to walk the many paths you take us on. Thank you so very much Tom.

People always are so thrilled when they come to a downhill path rather than one they have to climb...from my experience, I love climbing up a path like this...my lungs may get a workout...but my thigh muscles strain and, at times cramp, trying to keep myself upright as I descend...the downhill slope seems to transfer into a precariously wild speedway and I must be very cautious so as not to stub my toe on a bit of the uneven ground or catch the tip of my shoe in one of the many criss-crossing tree roots in the lane so as not to go .”... over teakettle” 😂. You travel such gloriously beautiful treks, Tom. I do appreciate them!

Thanks Tom for taking us on such a glorious walk which included so many little interesting chats along the way. My rambling days started many years ago when we moved from inner city Melbourne to Licola, a tiny hamlet in the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in eastern Victoria. With my children left in my husband's care, I popped on my gum boots and wandered up to where little Target Creek joins the lovely Macalister River. Nothing but sheep for company in adjoining paddocks on one side and steep bushy hillsides on the other but lovely little surprises were popping up in the middle of the stream where I waded...including native watercress, maidenhair ferns, tiny crustaceans and interesting rock formations. Not a place to find evidence of human habitation as its always been an isolated area but a joy to wander on your own with the tumbling water a musical background. Cheers Roz.

Taking me down through the houses to the church, past the graves and their beautiful headstones, past the chickens and beautiful old stone walls that are so wonderfully built. Your path you took was so interesting. It seemed so safe, serene and a great place to clear your mind. Such a beautiful day to add to it all. This was my first of your videos to be saved. So much I missed while eagerly listening to you and yet trying to take in all the scenery. Wish I could have watched you going down on your skateboard ride. I feel compelled to tell you that your videos bring me so much joy! I have always been a creek walker, ever since my grandparents moved to a house that had a sweet little creek running in front of it! That was MY creek! I knew every stone and could almost do it with my eyes closed! I also dream of visiting England someday , but right now I am unable to barely walk as both of my knees are needing replacing. So it is extremely painful to walk. But your videos have brought me there! And just the last 5 or minutes of this video where you just walked was dreamy and mesmerizing! I enjoy all the narration, very much but that bit of just the sound of your steps and the birds while you finished your recording was just like heaven to me! Thank you and please, more of this type of thing! Sharing on Facebook now!
