Entertaining, I started playing a bit before you and seeing you crack that gem brought back memories of lost weekends with friends,two of them have passed away since. Ahh... the old glass beads. I used to have a bunch of green ones for poison tokens, red one's for - life and black ones for +. This is a really cool find though. It seems crazy that things like this are still being found.

My brother and I each got one of these for Christmas in 1995. I still have the rulebook, some of the counters, the bag, and some of the cards.

This was the first magic product I ever opened. I was super young and my brother was trying to get me into the game so we went to the store and I bought this and like 5 boosters of legends. So nice to see this set open, I still have my little black bag with counters from this!

I love Quinton Hoover art too, and wish he was still alive to make more. I think enough of us love his style enough that he might have been commissioned by wotc to do a few more card arts. His style was very much his own, and he was actually a pretty good artist compared to a lot of the other mtg artists from back then. Great opening; super interesting! :)

I totally got one of these when I was a kid around 5th grade. Held on to the box for a long time but it got pretty beat up in my backpack. I still have the glass counters and the bag.

I feel sick to my stomach, knowing how much these are worth. When I was deployed to Bosnia for Operation Joint Endeavor (1995-1996), Wizards Of The Coast sent literal boat loads of these boxes to us via the USO and sponsored MTG tournaments weekly. All one had to do to get a box was to sign up for a tournament each week. The collector in me jumped all over this opportunity. Every week for months I got a box, and had several buddies get boxes for me. The boxes we got were the ones that included a preview edition mini comic book (there was also a gold seal on the outside of the box indicating this). At the end of my deployment, I came home with 68 of those things, all sealed. My plan, of course, was to keep them and sell them later when they went up in value. After holding on to them for almost 10 years, I discovered that my wife (now ex-wife) had thrown them away, "because they were just sitting around collecting dust", she said.

4 rares in the second pack? That's pretty cool. Don't remember that happening when I used to open these. Fastbond, Darkpact, Reverse Damage and Copy Artifact in a single deck is pretty stupid! Pretty poor value but solid regardless. That opening made me shed a tear from sheer nostalgia.

the card pictured on page 49 of the booklet is an artifact that gives a creature banding. thats the perfect mechanic for new players, am I right? Its not that it is that complicated, but it flies in the face of what you are trying to teach new players about combat math.

Feels weird that some kids my age in 1983 who got into this game are now 33 and having their kids following in their footsteps. Kinda like me, except I'm the first in my family to play. You have Inninstrad, I have Shadows over Inninstrad.

Only thing I have left from this when I bought it, is the life counters. During 20+ years I am using it lot of counters got lost though.

I got the 4th Edition gift boxes when I started as a kid. The bag is a lot different than the Revised one.

Way back when Wizards produced Pokemon cards, their decks came with those glass counters too. I had one in my mouth when I was like 15, and I somehow accidentally swallowed it like a moron (probably a moron for having one of those in my mouth in the first place.) I waited for weeks for a sign that it had come out (a sound, something), and it never did...as far as I know. So, I guess it's safe to assume that I have a damage counter stuck somewhere in my digestive system some 16 years later!
