Hi Gareth. Thanks for another brill review. The asda one was great quality and value but you've got to love Pukka pies. I had a steak one the other night and its probably the closest you will get to a butchers pie. Great pastry and always generous fillings. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
I think the Asda pie looks more appetising to be fair because of the darker filling and better looking top crust. Try the beef & vegetable pasties if you haven't already. Only 45p. I serve with either mash and beans or new potatoes, carrots peas & gravy. Both filling and nourishing. And cheap.
They’re all full of gristle i bought a pack of 18 in one of those big pizza style boxes and every one was full of big chunks of gristle they’re nasty! Chicken and mushroom are safe as there’s no gristle lol
Try lowering the temp, if it says 180C for an oven bake, reduce temp to 140-160, and time about 2/3 of the bake time. You can always add a few mins if its not enough.
Yeh that’s true. Cook low and slow as the Yanks say. You’ll get your pie hot throughout without burning it with a cold filling. Cooking anything that has mass should be cooked the same. Chicken especially, leg of Lamb etc.
🏴👏 nice comparison mate, times are hard and prices for food is going through the roof at the moment, I’d go with the 74p pie because everyone puts sauce on there pies 👏🏴
Couple of months back I did a review of 3 Pukka Pies, and their Minced Beef and Onion came out on top for me. Would be great with some mash, mushy peas and a good amount of gravy I reckon!! Have you tried the Cheese, Leek and Potato one? That was really good too.
@@bennbanes6359 It's good isn't it. Most cheese based pies just seem to be stuffed with like a cheesy mash, but the Pukka one has a nice gooey sauce and chunks of spud. Yum!
Great comparison the ASDA pie looked pretty good and it's half the price of the Puker pie so I will have to check this one out. Oh Patrick Dickinson yeah he's well worth a watch like you said.
Hello there, I've loved watching Patrick for years, he's brilliant. The great outdoors, you've got it all on your doorstep, up there, especially you, got the lot. Wildlife and wild walks x pukka pies are the best.
I will try the Asda bargain basement pie with some mushy peas and a bit of gravy next time I go in there shop. Pukka pies I only buy when there on offer there okay but there is not the same amount of meat in them these days I think they have pinched some out so the nation don't get too fat me thinks i would prefer one of those pies you got off that butcher man up in the hills you visited the other week
I think I would go for the asda essentials too, great that you gave Patrick a shout out Gareth,He makes some banging meals on his wild camps,a bit more reserved when he is up a tree though 👍
Thanks for your great reviews. Can’t understand why people think Pukka Pies are so wonderful. They used to be better than they are now. Their Steak & Kidney pies used to have real pieces of kidney in them, but all you now get is a hint of kidney with a ‘slurry’ type texture - awful. Such a shame, they used to be good, but not any more. Cost rules everything, manufacturers are constantly cutting quality and size to boost profits. I don’t buy Pukka Pies any longer, there are much better alternatives out there.
My fav pie of all time damn I miss them I would even excuse the bone cannot get them here but got got plenty of spaten in fridge nice one Gareth video of the month
Great review as always 👍The ASDA pie looked ok to be fair. Very detailed with all the ingredients examined and weight! Might be worth using pence per gram when comparing several products at different prices? In a previous life were you a food tester for someone important 😂
Hi, love your channel and the reviews, a few months ago I had a Pucker pie with the biggest bit of bone you could imagine it broke me tooth in half, put me off completely
Glad to see you finally back home Gaz... I hope you all enjoyed your family holiday over in France mate... I'm very surprised to see a tiny piece of bone in the Pukka Pie my friend... I've personally never found one ever in all the years I've been eating them pal... Maybe I've just been lucky all these years... I'm grabbing a few items from Tesco tomorrow morning... And i'll be trying their budget range Eastman's Steak Pie... £0.90 for a 150g Pie... I've no idea what it'll be like... But i'm giving it a go anyway... Thanks for the review Gaz... Cheers mate. 🍺
Morning Gareth! The fly must be on a suicide mission when the Scoville Sauce is opened. I have a can of fly spray in every room, RAID is the only one that works, and I spent £20 replacing the cans for each room on my last ASDA delivery, there are no flies on me, nor in a 200yd radius. There is no vegetation of any kind either! So there is real meat in a Pukka Pie rather than meat essence! Desperate Dan's 'Cowpie Deluxe' also contained bones (horns) as you may recall. Good start to the day this! Thanks & VBW x
I just had some asda 8 pork sausages and there were 3 bone bits in the 4 I've had. These said something about being flavourful in new packaging and I think just out recently but I never found bone in them before so maybe that's where the new comes from- the addition of minced bone (not on ingredients list and no warnings)?
Great review, thank you for all your videos. A suggestion/recommendation for you if you like pizza. Last night had a Tesco finest Ham and Mushroom pizza with mascarpone cheese. By far and away the best shop bought pizza I've ever had. It was banging and really tasty. Easily better than a takeaway. If you do like pizza, you might like to give them a whirl.
Mate,i had that mad dog 357 with the bullet spoon key chain ! watch out mate it's bloody lethal stuff !...if you unscrew the firing cap end Gaz,there is a tiny spoon in it !
Gareth…the Pukka one…Has to taste better…it’s the only one with the old MSG in…I have noticed recently that they are putting it in sausage’s…the mind boggles..great vid..cheers
@@BaldFoodieGuy It would me…like bones in fish…but it does speak volumes…that Pukka puts on the box…a warning about bones…and the Asda one does not…personally I am not a fan of their brand
Eh up Gazza hows tha doin. I think both pies looked good and it's really dependent on budget. Amazing video and thank you for collaborating with the fly.
Hi Gareth. Great review, the pastry on there Asda one was very thick but hey it's £0:74 and you enjoyed it, you enjoyed them both which is great. Thanks for this vid. Best. Johnny. 🥧
Cheers Gareth great review mate. Both look good to be honest . But the bone has put me off pukka . Can you remember Robirch pies they was great . Cheers Gareth I will try the Asda brand .👍❤️
Hi Gaz, just tried new McDonalds Spanish stack. It's really tasty, with halloumi fries also good. Washed down with fruit punch drink. Very refreshing. If you haven't already tried it I recommend. 👌
As a northern Yorkshire man I can't stand a sloppy pie pastry! Don't get me started on Fray Bentos pies! I wouldn't have one give.. I lived in Nuneaton (midlands) for 6 months and every chip shop was vile! Just looking at that pukka sinking pastry brings back memories. It was like torture. I once asked for a chip butty and the lady serving looked at me like I wanted some kind of perverted meal. ( they call em batches)
Hi Gareth great video 👍 I have followed Patrick Dickenson for a good time now , love his wild camp videos and his shed pub always entertaining. You should make yourself a pub too for filming your drink reviews 👍👍
Hi Gareth. I don't know if it's a bad upload or RU-vid playback but this video is really jumpy (jackhammer) and audio is out of sync. As far as the pies go they both look good and sound very tasty. Where one lacks, the other makes up for. Yes I find some of the cheaper can be better. Too bad you didn't try a bit of each pie with a little ketchup / tomato sauce. Us Aussie's love our tomato sauce on the pie. Good job it wasn't a dinosaur sized bone you found 🦖. Great to see another pie compare. Cheers Gareth 👍🤤😀
Love your reviews. Pukka pies are brill, but that Asda one looked good too, especially at the price! Just a quickie, I noticed you cooked them on 'bake' in your Air Fryer. I cook them on 'Air Fry' in mine. Which do you think does them the best?
Was going back and forth to Leicester on business a few years ago and saw Pukka pies before they were widely distributed. Decent enough brand. Asda seems way better value though.
Reminds me of the one, Man finds maggot in meat pie at chip shop, shouts over member of staff shows him maggot in pie. Staff member says thats not a maggot its fat? Customer says I know its fat its eaten all the meat!
Both good pies, but Pukka a little better, but you pay more. Good amount of meat and gravy, pastry good. Watch those bones. Tomato sauce required on top..Aussie style. 8 for Asda, 8.5 for Pukka.
Had plenty of Pukka Pies on a wet, cold sunday at Fratton Park watching my fave team get beaten like an egg. Half time, piping hot Pukka Pie 2.50...back in 2001. Used to grab 3 of the steak n kidney with a few sachets of HP. See you tongiht ❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
@@BaldFoodieGuy I don't tend to buy minced products though because you don't know what's in it. Basically it's mechanically recovered meat. I once saw potted meat been made and I saw an eyeball going in the mixture. Never again will I eat it!
We take every care to remove all bones but sometimes one may remain. I always laugh because where i come from "a bone" is when a gentleman is appreciative of a lady (or another gentleman) if you catch my drift!
I remember finding lumps of gristle in school dinner stews back in the 60's. That and potatoes with grey lumps in... Yuck. and peas like bullets... Put you off for life..
While I agree that the ASDA 74p pie looks nice, when you cut in to it there just wasn't as much meat as was in the Pukka pie and there was quite a cavern between the meat and the crust; you do get what you pay for... It's Pukka all the way for me, but only when it's on the cheap shelf.
Agreed. With pies you definitely get what you pay for. Then it’s the quality of the ingredients. The mincemeat is probably the cheapest crap you can buy, where as Pukka use more quality ingredients.
@@BaldFoodieGuy Unfortunately, finding a bit of bone in our food is more of a sign of the mechanisation of the food preparation industry; it would never have happened when pies were all hand-made. I'd be more upset if I found a bit of gristle because these are usually quite large pieces and there are no warnings saying 'may contain gristle'.
If your trying to make your mind up gaz that says there’s no difference! WOW!!! The Asda one all day long! 2 for the price of one basically as well! Whack a few beans on and your laughing 👍🏻😂😂
Think pies are definitely what you pay for. Buy the cheap shit you’ll get a pie full of cheap gravy and a few chunks of meat p. If I buy from my local butcher and the meat pies he packs them full of meat😋
Hi idk if you've talked about your deep fat fryer since the unboxing video...was curious how handy it is for the family I would probably go crazy and eat homemade chips everyday
Hello fellow Cumbrian. When I seen the thumbnail about the bone my mind automatically presumed it would be the cheap pie that had bones! Also what is the cooker you placed the pies in and do you recommend it? Thanks
