Round 58! I have an abundance of (and regularly obtain) old, random rolls of super 8 film that were shot many years ago by their original owners. These cartridges were either inside cameras (or cases) that I've purchased or included with other lots of film I've purchased over the years or in some cases, sent to me by viewers.
In this video, we're going to see what's on this particular cartridge of old Ektachrome 160 Type A Sound film.
Equipment I used to make this RU-vid Video:
Canon M50 (4K @ 24P): amzn.to/3DR7ujk
Neewer LED-NL660 Light Kit: amzn.to/3kSPZYM
BOYA BY-M1 Microphone: amzn.to/3Iww9eR
My Livestream Camera:
Logitech C922X Pro: amzn.to/43hdiMI

That is definitely the same parade as in Film #14. I would bet that is fall of 1978, although it “could be” 1979. That is the Arcadia Band Revue which takes place in November on Baldwin Avenue, starting just north of this perspective by Santa Anita Racetrack. The previous film showed Foothills Jr. High. This film showed Dana Jr. High, and First Avenue Jr. High, which I attended from 1975-1978. If this was November 1978, I was a sophomore at Arcadia High (when it was a 10th-12th school). The drum major was Rick Clough…just checked the yearbook. I spent a LOT of time in my teens at Bowling Square in the background. NO idea who Little Joey’s family would be related to in Arcadia! By the way, Clark Drugs had some of the best ice cream! Nice work! -Jorge

I just marched in our local Labor Day parade carrying old glory this past Monday so this video made me smile. Did anyone else get C.H.i.P.s vibes when seeing what looked to be a CHP motorcycle officer? I was like, Hey, it's Ponch or John at the parade! 😂. Yet another great found film, thanks! 😀

Great job, Michael! The sound remains very good after all these years - very likely for two reasons: 1) I did the math back in the late 1970s and if I remember correctly the width of the magnetic track on Super 8 is roughly that of one stereo channel of a cassette tape, but it runs much faster, even at 18fps. So the quality is potentially better. The only drawback was that it's iron oxide tape (as opposed to chrome, ferrochrome or pure iron) which doesn't have that much high end, but according to instruction booklets of cameras and projectors the frequency response goes up to at least 10 kHz, which is good. For comparison: 35mm optical sound goes up to 8kHz and that's it. 16mm optical sound goes up to 6.5 kHz. 2) most tape de-magnetizes over time, because one layer de-magnetizes the other inside the stored roll. BUT on Super 8 film you have the acetate layer between the layers of tape, slowing down de-magnetization over time. I must add that these are all assumptions, but derived from my knowledge about audio tape coming from decades of experience as a musician/producer. Thanks again for resurrecting these past events.

Thanks for the info, Christian! I'm always amazed at how well some of this old audio comes out. On a side note, I thought you might find this funny...I got a copyright claim as soon as this was uploaded to RU-vid. I guess the band's tune from 5:14 - 6:24 is recognizable 🤷‍♂ Definitely can't sneak anything by them these days 😆

Great results, Mike! '79 was a wonderful year; I was just getting into 8mm filmmaking at that time with a Canon 310 XL. Those were the days! Glad you're doing what you're doing, my friend,. Keep it up! Testing a new - to me! - camera, so will be sending a couple rolls your way soon. Have a great weekend!

Nice work! $6.24 in 1978 would be around $30 nowadays. Already expensive back then 😯 Makes you wonder why they never bothered to have it developed.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Год назад
Thanks, Nisei!! Yeah, I remember paying less than that in some places in the mid 80s. Developing was real cheap too. Well, I guess it's all relative really.

Just found your chanel with all that interesting stuff! I did some experiments with 8mm film that i developed in caffenol for fun, and what i found is that the remjet is very easily removed (i guess due to the washing soda component) Have fun and keep it up :)

It would be nice if Kodak could figure out a new adhesive and bring back sound super 8. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they had to discontinue it because a chemical in the adhesive was banned by one of the administrations. There might not be a huge market for it since most cameras seem to be silent, but I would buy it up if they ever re-released it. Then I guess I'd be hunting down a camera and projector.
@I.O.M.
@I.O.M. Год назад
Small market but agree 100%. I would buy sound film as well.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Год назад
That would be pretty awesome! Yes, it was the adhesive that led to its eventual demise. There must be a more environmentally friendly alternative. I agree that it would be quite a niche market, coupled with the lack of new sound cameras, but I'd be in even if a 3rd party decided to give it a go. Nothing quite like the crackle of old magnetic stock. Brings back so many memories.

@@Filmboy24 Maybe we should poke FPP into doing it since they're doing a lot with current 8mm and 16mm film.

Love this one. How exactly do you extract the sound from the stripe? Sound projector with a line out? Thanks again for all you do!
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Год назад
Thank you!! That's exactly how I extract the audio, however I use a couple of extra steps as well for perfect sync. I bought a MovieStuff RetroSync Sound Module that the projectore projects into during audio capture. The module records the projector's "pulses" as you capture. You then render the audio, using the RetroSync software at your desired frame rate, then align it with your scanned film. Syncs perfectly without stretching anything, as long as your film scan is frame by frame.
