Just here to add: If you're adopted, the pantheon that relates to your adopted family would absolutely have you with welcome arms. I hope you don't have any anxiety surrounding that!

I try not to disturb the dead. They're resting, and I can imagine they might be a little grumpy when they're woken up. The only time I really do anything with my ancestors, is Halloween or for Day of the dead
@christianmunz2103

Honestly, if I need to be woken up, it should only be for life or death circumstances or playing a prank on someone.
@taminelson2729
@taminelson2729 4 года назад
Working with ancestors isn't the same as digging them up. You're not disturbing them, (as long as you're not doing some sort of summoning spell.) You're offering them an opportunity to be with you or work with you. Start by offering a drink, meal, or a story about your life or theirs.
@calonstanni
@calonstanni 4 года назад
@@taminelson2729 I agree with all ya'll. I recently built an ancestor altar and, as Tami wrote, I offer them reverence, gratitude, acknowledgment, food, drink, stories, and I let them know that I am here if any of them feel the NEED or the desire to visit me. If not, that's ok. I am very ok just showing gratitude and remembrance. However, like RabeaUmbra and Christian alluded to, I would NEVER EVER "SUMMON" them unless it were an extremely dire circumstance - that I can't even imagine.

It got a bit late for me yesterday so I’ve watched the video after having a nice and easy Sunday morning. It’s a very interesting topic. I’m not interested in finding a deity to worship. I have a catholic background and my grandparents are pretty religious so we went to church every Sunday and all of us ended up at the centre of the community we have here. My sister played the organ, my mom was head of the official church group (we still had a good connection with the mayor office and we could get sponsorship in case the church roof needed repair of something and she would work with that) and I did some work in the church and during the ceremonies. All 3 of us quit because we noticed just how rotten the community was. I more than everyone else really drew back from anything religious and closed myself off so I could take a deep breath and look at things with different eyes again. Witchcraft, Wicca and paganism has intrigued me for a long time. My family always wrote it off as fiction and that’s what I saw it as too so I never felt guilty reading about it while being catholic. After closing myself off from religions for a while witchcraft came back into view and once I found out that to practice you don’t actually need a deity to worship I dove in deeper. I wanted to do something with the energy within me and I feel comfortable with what I’m reading about witchcraft. Now this switch to witchcraft only happened about a year to a year and a half ago and I’ve only been truly referring to myself as a witch for about a month, maybe less. My family doesn’t know obviously but I’m ok with that for now. I want more time to explore it for myself first. Videos like this are really helpful definitely since I’m dyslexic and videos are easier than reading. I do really like stories so reading mythological stories is something I love to do. I already know a lot of Greek and Roman mythology but I’m also interested in Norse mythology and Japanese mythology. I have a strong attraction to Japan I want to go there and I’m trying to learn the language because I find that really important to learning the culture since language is a large part of a culture. One thing that has been quite obvious to me is that once I decided to stop seeing witchcraft as fiction and start taking it seriously I’ve actually seen a presence that I always felt around me. It was a large dragon and he is showing himself to me more clearly the further go on this path. I truly believe now that the main higher beings I should be working with are dragons. Although I’m definitely open to working with deities I am still not ready to get back to worshipping them or any other higher beings. It just doesn’t feel right for me. Sorry for the long comment, I really did enjoy the video and I’m looking forward to the next one. Also I apologise if there are any mistakes in my comment. English isn’t my first language 😅💕

anarischia I absolutely think worshiping isn’t necessary or right for every witch! We can work with all sorts of energies without worshiping them, and that helps make each individual practice beautiful!

I love comments with stories! I wanted to give you a tip for learning. If you have a library card, there is an app called Libby where you just punch in your library card number and then you can "check-out" audiobooks from the library for free. I was very surprised with how much they had available for the witchcraft inclined. For norse mythology i would highly recommend The Poetic Edda translated by Jackson Crawford (it was available as audiobook in my library district so might be in yours too), and a youtube channel i love is Arith Härger.

Another thing that I didn't realize, or agree with, until recently is... WE can "create" our own deity. I bring this up because I HATED god/goddess research and felt that I was just going to settle on Morgana/freya/Athena blah blah blah because I got worn out and tired of being god-less. To ME, it seemed as if the gods were all on an endless buffet from which I had to choose my few favorites OR wait around for them to choose me. And what about the gods/goddesses that have been forgotten? Can you imagine how many trillions of those there are that may be "Just the one?" So, wanting to work with deity, I started hearing MANY other witches who found their own deities to worship and/or work with. I've recently chosen that path and I'm happy I did. Whiskey Stevens has a youtube video called "Can you create your own gods?" that I highly recommend.

This is a really wonderful video, thank you for sharing your insights. I especially love how you suggest we let go and look for the signs in nature, it's amazing how the deities communicate subtly (and overtly!) with us, revealing their personalities! I have been diving into my ancestries, which has awakened some powerful connections to my homeland(s) deities. I do want to offer an alternative for adoptees. My partner is adopted (closed) and to him, his adoptive parents ARE his parents. They raised him from the moment he was born, and shared their culture with him. The idea of an adopted child needing to trace their bloodline can reinforce an unnecessary tie to social constructs of race and lineage. Foundlings belong to their found families. They have been invited into a tradition, and if they don't feel pulled to explore their genetic ancestry, they needn't feel pressured to do so. The love and wisdom passed to them by their adoptive parents is a lineage all adoptees have the right to tap into. If they want both their blood and adoptive cultural gods, they have a right to both, IMO. All can find belonging. Likewise, if you trace your bloodline and hit a dead end on one of the branches, that doesn't mean you're unable to claim what may be further back. My paternal grandfather was orphaned quite young, and we'll likely never know his ancestry beyond North European, but does that mean I don't have enough blood to call out to the Germanic gods? I'd say not. We needn't reach backward to an archaeological purity, there often isn't one.

Deities were topic for a weekly challenge in the Pagan and Witchcraft Amino. I don't have a Patron God so I kinda felt left out at first but instead I wrote about why I don't have one and wrote about my soft polytheist belief system. I found a wonderful network of secular witches who all practice differently. I'm still open to finding a Patron but not searching.

I like My True Ancestry ...it tells you where they were and when going back as far back as you can (mine went back 4000 years!) and when I saw that it clicked for me. Because my parents didn't really know much about where the family had been and where we came from. This became very obvious (for example) my father loved his greek fisherman hat and loved to speak Italian, but he thought he was Polish. Even though my father thought he was Polish he wasn't really....the DNA showed me that we were actually Greek going back 4000 years. My father loved spanish bullfight music (he was very eclectic!) and I found that from 1000 to 1500 we were living in Iberia, which was where the ancestors had moved after the fall of the Roman Emipire. Before that we had lived in Rome for about 2300 years! I also found I have 4 ancestors (on both sides) who are buried in the highlands of Crete dated from about 2000 BC. Europe is all mixed up, the people moved around alot, the Romans shuffled the deck and then Crusades shuffled it again. Famines and illness and wars moved people around like chessmen on a board. You may not be who you think... Food for thought. You may be attratcted to gods you only think aren't attached to your lineage...the waters are muddy.

The music is beautiful, especially the flute, it gave me chills. Thanks for a great video. I have yet to connect with my god/dess. I've felt a pull in a few places but nothing confirmed yet. Although, I am just coming home to my craft after leaving it for almost a decade; so there's that... I do like ancestral magic but I don't know much about my ancestors. I don't have a relationship with my biological father; and my mother didn't learn much of our heritage from my grandmother and grandfather prior to their deaths. I have traced our names back to Scotland and Belgium. However, there is a lot of room for error, so I am going to try 23andMe to get a clearer picture :)

O wow, I watched this video this afternoon and I am back. I was married to a man from Mexico and I have a daughter with him. She is 13 now about to be 14. I fell in love with Guadelupe when seeing her in the Mexican culture and I even had her tattooed on my leg( from my ankle to my knee) This was over 12 years ago. I was always talking to her ... even to this day and she is so beautiful, and I resonate I love her. I even have a picture of her in my apartment. I have candles with her and I never thought until today she maybe my Goddess and I looked up Guadelupe as a Goddess and information came up. I am white and I am not catholic, Can you help me make sense of this. Am I supposed to be setting offerings out for her and what should I set out. I am just now learning about Gods and Goddess although I have always been in touch with my spiritual side. I do not speak Spanish because he spoke English. I understand a lot and I can speak some but not proper and fluent. How do I know if she is my Goddess?Thoughts?

Almost all deities are good with alcohol or fresh bread. Learn all you can about the culture and start from there. Take time and offer a drink and have a conversation with your deity. Listen with your heart. They're thrilled to have someone listen and make an offering. They'll be grateful for what you offer.
@taminelson2729
@taminelson2729 2 года назад
@Trinity M yes, not ALL deities like bread and alcohol, that's why I said MOST. My patron deity does not like alcohol or milk (but that's what most give her). She prefers water. However, most deities are happy to receive offerings, no matter what they are. Bread and alcohol is enjoyed by MOST and especially as a first offering, it's fine. There are hundreds of thousands of deities if not millions, the less than 1% that don’t like alcohol or bread will not strike you down for offering them something from given with love and respect that they don't care for.

How do you feel about the idea of creating/inventing your own god(s)? If you look across multiple religions and pantheons, deities start to fall into archetypes, or at least have multiple shared attributes. It's common for sky gods to also be warriors and kings, for example, or for tricksters to be associated with the afterlife. Do you think it's valid for witches to take the attributes of different gods that appeal to them while discarding those which don't, and search for their own, unique deity?
