Found Quartz Crystals While Prospecting For Pegmatite - Possible Pegmatite Quartz pocket

In this video, while prospecting for pegmatites, I discovered quartz float which may be right above a pagmatite crystal pocket. I found some quartz crystals on the surface and will have to return to the location in the near future to start digging into the ground in hopes to find the source.
Pegmatites are igneous intrusive rocks that can be found as dikes or sills usually near and in association with granite plutons and intrusions.

We were able to make it back up to this location and it proved to be a decent spot for crystals. We did a lot of digging and found the source. Here is the latest video of this location ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5sF_9Y_TnYg.html.

The gasp I GUSPED when you slammed that gorgeous yellow quartz into the ground

The deeper red on those couple of points is gorgeous. Iron staining can be patchy and ugly but sometimes it can really elevate eye appeal of a piece. That'd be a shelf specimen for me for sure.

Those are some nice finds in that spot. Speaking for myself, I always enjoy finding crystals...regardless of their size. Great vid!

continue your search, look at the same time also at mica and feldspar. Commonly parts of a pegmatite. Disintegrated feldspar can look like colorful mud. Share your knowledge and good luck.

Dig some digging recently but the bedrock was deeper than I thought it was going to be below the soil (2ft-3ft). Didn't find much but I haven't found the source yet. I'll continue searching in the spring once the snows gone and the ground is no longer frozen.

hello from the other part of the world buddy....and nothing is more intrested than hunting minerals and it is so amazing if you are geologist as well

Hello to you too. I always enjoy seeing new rocks and minerals when I'm up in the mountains and I love it when I find something a little more rare like crystals. I'm glad to meet new people who are also interested in the subject. I am studying to be a geologist so I would say I'm a unofficial geologist with much to learn.

Nice to see your geological knowledge develop over time. Those pockets are called 'vugs' BTW. Are you at college yet?

I'd be taking a few of those samples home to crush and see how much freemill gold is in it, sure looks well mineralized. Also panning some samples (couple pans full) in the area.

Sounds like a good idea. One of the first people to homestead in the area near the end of the 1800's found some gold but it never said how much he found or how little. The mountains in this area are mostly gneiss and from my understanding, you can get pocket gold sometimes. There is also a story only my family knows and who ever else was told but apparently, someone found a gold vein in these mountains but either they could not find it or something happened. I plan on going back up there once the snow melts. I've also started building a homemade impact mill for crushing. When I go pack, Ill try to remember to pan the stuff out just to see, thanks.

Sp if i walked by my valley where im from Ansonia amd i see a black wall amd some vein like scibbly line of white stuff. Is pegmatite the white vein or is it the black wall itself
@GeoForge

Pegmatite is a name for the texture of an igneous rock, its associated with large grain sizes larger than 2 cm if I remember correctly. So, It could be just a quartz vein that's been deformed since you said its scribbly and white. It could also be banding in a metamorphic rock. If you see other minerals grains/crystals in it, then it could be a pegmatite. I would recommend looking up images online to compare it with.

what state - area are you in?
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 4 года назад
I'm currently located in the North West of the United States. For now, I'm trying to keep my state location under the radar. I've had a few people find out my location already and I've had one person find the exact location I was prospecting in. Eventually I may reveal more details but not right now :)

at 8:02 you missed an amethyst on the rock!!!!!!!!!!1
@GeoForge
@GeoForge 3 года назад
I think that was iron staining in the quartz. I have dug in the area since this video and recovered lots of crystals, no amethysts yet.

No, it is not. I'm located in the Western part of North America. I will give a more detail to my location once I reach 2000 subscribers.

That was going to be my first question. I'm in the SE and just started looking into rockhounding due to a quest for radioactive sources. There is an area that is supposed to have good deposits in the surrounding areas of Spruce Pine North Carolina. I had to dig through all sorts of documents to find good spots. Most of them are owned by Mica and quartz mines mine who wont let me in. I've done about as much as I can without actually going there which I plan to do in a few months. I need to find a old dude who will share some wisdom on the area and collecting in general.
