This is an update I wish I didn't have. This video uncovers hidden rust behind the fabric. Camera used: amzn.to/3lXoBFp
I have had experience with rusty fuselages in the past that were exposed to the eye. I knew what to look for when it comes to finding slightly bent tubes or metal pitting. However, I have recently learned what to look for when looking at the fabric on an old "rag wing aircraft"
If you see un smooth fabric, just count on rust to be safe.
This aircraft can be repaired, however I'm not able to start or hang on to another restoration project at this time.
I have made to decision to not have another (complete restoration project) as I currently have a 1939 J3 project that I will start to pick back up on.
If you have any suggestions or comments, please mare sure to leave them!
Thank you!
Be safe and be blessed!

This shouldn't be a surprise and it's not the end of the world. Any old tube and fabric project is going to have this. I've pulled fabric off many old airplanes, a lot of them "in annual" and found worse.

Bummer! As a fellow Vintage fabric plane owner, I sympathize...

Wow dude, my heart sank for ya. Just never know when you take on a project... But definitely something others will watch and learn from. On to the next chapter then.

Very true. However, I did learn more about how to spot potential rust under fabric. Good experience the HARD way!

Had Same Problem My Quick recover project had same problem. But I lucked out as I had a customer who was head instructor at a local aviation community college. He advised the college had a space for the recover project. Time was not a factor. Ended up as complete rebuild of fuselage, total recover, new windshield ,new paint, complete engine overhaul. Four years later, basically all new aircraft. Total Cost was, parts plus 10%, NO labor cost. I called it my College educated Tripacer

That's awesome. Glad it worked out well for you. Do you still have the Tri-Pacer?

Splice it... patch it... fly it. Make it pretty later when you do the full resto.

Unfortunately there appears to be at least 3 more potential rusty sections. Based on what this area looked like. Including the tail post where two of the tubes come together. It’s due now for a full restoration. I tried not to be too optimistic when I looked it over when purchasing. With the airframe just “passing annual inspection” apparently I was a little too optimistic.

Man, that’s tough. It is always a hazard of vintage airplane projects. I hope you find a better one soon to convert.

This has been a surprise and hard decision to make. I've decided to not carry on with this now being another restoration project as I already have one (1939 J3 project). The Univar gear switch can be a fairly easy change and not require a full teardown, which is what I signed up for. It's really just too bad that it will require much more than I have time for, as I plan to have a 4 place aircraft within the next year...

Ryan, do you have this PA-22 on Barnstormers? I live in Columbia City and been going back in forth on a Pacer project or a Stinson 108-. Currently fly a Velocity that I built out of HHG. Last night I was talking to a guy from Laotto who’s moving to Albion and he suggested your channel to me.

@@brettgerber795 Yes. I’ve listed the fuselage and STC gear kit so far on Barnstormers. The Stinson is a great aircraft too!

@@Blaircraft.Engines Just the fuselage without wings correct?

@@brettgerber795 That’s correct. However, I still have the wings.

I’ll sell you my beautiful PA22/20-150 if you want. Has approx 100 hours since conversion and total restoration. 57k
