In this video I patch up a old cement & stone foundation, I cut groves or ground off some paint and did a light stucco coat over it, I used a sealer at the end. All my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help,

I second that. I am an absolute novice. I wrote a comment to Mike, and he took the time to comment back to me. I've learned so... Much from watching his videos. I watch some of them again and again. On Saturday - at a church in Boston, for the past month or so - I've been working on a stone wall. Some of the mortar is letting to - and its only a matter of time - before the wall will need major work. I'm just trying to get a few hundred (just kidding) more years out of the walls. Mike IS a down to earth man. I feel like a Mike Haddock apprentice.

It’s always great to watch a craftsman practice his art, but more than that, you are a fantastic teacher. You make both look easy, which clearly they are not, but the ease with which you approach a given topic both informs and educates us with not just the how’s, but the also the why’s, which are equally important. It instills confidence in each of us to finally face that crumbling wall that has stood for a hundred years and say, you don’t scare me, wall! Mike believes in me and says I can do it, so doggone it, that’s just what I’m gonna do!” Thank you for putting these videos out there and sharing your wisdom, talent, and expertise. Like great music that gets rediscovered, your work doesn’t just help us now but will continue to benefit for generations to come. Keep up the good work!

i heard you at the end talking about starting on a smaller section at first. Our experience here, especially with some of the older homes in the area, is that they were constructed and repaired over the years with a wide variety of styles, expertise, and materials. We never know what we will find. So... starting on a smaller example let's us see what we are getting into and talk it over with the owners before all the surprises pop up. Your example about all the wild life behind the exterior makes my point. Gotta get them out first.

Nice job Mike..I never use latex sealer its water based how will water keep out water.?I used liquid silicone pure clear as water and all masonary totally dry hit 2 or 3 times will last in the weather for ever with that sprayed on it,my front brick stoop was just 31 years old and all the winters all the ice and rain the summer rain and heat it is as it was the first day.And now having said that the Government outlawed that product ,but the new latex sealer has 5% liquid silicone in it ,really why the hell is that if its so dangerous? Because the liquid straight is so good u never have to go back on repairs unless someone hits it with a car or truck.Just blowing off some steam Mike have a good one.

Mike, I have a stone wall foundation that leaks like a sieve when it rains. I'm wanting to go outside and dig down about 2 feet around the foundation (in probably 10' sections at a time), cream it with some stucco then seal it and bury it again. Then I'm going to tuck point it on the inside to sure up the stones from being loose in some areas. Would you say this is a plausible solution to my leaky foundation? I'm just wondering if this could run the risk of the foundation bulging or blowing out when I dig out the sections since I will be unpacking the dirt against the foundation. Please kindly let me know what you think if you don't mind. Thanks for all your videos you post, they are very helpful indeed.
@MikeHaduck

Hi SIlas, 90% of the water problems in foundations that I see is "no Raingutters" or the land is not pitched away from the foundation and the water settles against it. I would check that first, I hope it helps, thanks mike
@SilasJura
@SilasJura 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, Mike. Yea I fixed the rain gutters last year but there is an issue with the dirt not sloping away from the house. I planned on sloping the dirt away once I stucco'ed down a few feet because it would be easier to dig it out now before I add more dirt to create the slope but do you think I would be fine to just slope the dirt and forget digging down a few feet to get a good stucco on the outside. That would be the easier option but would create more work if that doesn't fix it and I do have to dig it out after all. I'm heading down in the basement today to prepare the stone for tuck-pointing and then tuck-point hopefully tomorrow. I guess I can just stucco all the walls inside the basement and apply a water sealer to prevent water seepage. Let me know what you think and thanks for your helpful advice and videos.

You said when you made it rich it will have the stress cracks, so is the 2nd coat made less rich? You used your normal 1/2 mortar, 1/2 portland, 2 units of sand for both coats?
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 5 лет назад
Yes chilly, let the first coat shrink a day or a few and then the next coat shouldn’t, just keep it light, mike

Can you stucco over paint if you use wall bond. Or synthetic stucco. Thanks

Hi mike , you could buy a stucco paint, everything depends on what your trying to do, most time I get the old paint off first, thanks mike

Hi Mike, First I would like to say that your videos are great. I’m local to you so it’s great to see what you do for our particular area. I have the same situation like you had in this video, I have an old foundation with paint on it and won’t come all off. I’m going to used the tools you used to try and get some of the paint off and notches to help grab the cement. I noticed you use a bonding agent with the Portland as the first mix to put on, but what kind of mix is used after that step. Do you use the same mix, Portland and the bonding primer, straight Portland, or was this a mix with the Portland sand and mortar S. I greatly appreciate the help and advice. Thank you!!
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 6 лет назад
Hi Lauren, after I put my bonding agent and I go right over it usually with two parts sand to one part cement S mortar is usually fine sometimes I will use Portland and I’ll get a little shrinkage but I know it’s going to stick I would do a little experiment thing where you can’t see it and wait a couple days to see what happens it takes Cement a couple days to harden , Thanks Mike

I noticed you used a concrete bonding adhesive this time when doing the portland adhesive - when should I do this as opposed to just using the portland cement?
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 7 лет назад
Hi Viadmier, when It has some paint on it would be my best answer to make the portland paint a little more gluey, but it is one of those things you got to feel when you think it might help, if that makes sense, it makes it dry a little slower and might be a bit more sticker, My opinion, thanks mike

Hey Mr Haduck. Good video. Got questions: What happened with the ants? Once u finish the job do they get back? how do u chase them away? and what happens if portland paint (drops of it) gets in your eyes? Did it happen to u? Thanks.

Hi El Senor, I try and remove all the cavities like a dentist so there is no where for insects to congregate, I would say that it is common in those kind of foundations, and seen it in block also, I never remember getting portland in my eyes but when I did get anything in my eyes I would flush it out with the hose, I think a good thing to do would be where glasses, I hope it helps, thanks mike

I keep hearing one has to use lime mortar due to it's porous properties. I respect your vids but you and other professionals have been using Portland cement and rapid setting type s or n mortar. Could you comment on this the more research I do the more questions I jave

@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 5 лет назад
Hi Henry, I usually show the mixes for every job, this I think I used 1part - half s mortar half Portland to 2 parts mason sand ( one cement to 2 sand). Other masons in other areas would not agree, but it works for me,,thanks, mike

Hi Mike, been watching your vids for a couple of months, sure taught an electrical guy a lot about masonry. Quick quetion- I used the Portland, acrylic ageny and water primer- thing is it goes flat looking in 2 minutes not at all 'wet' looking. Am I doing something wrong? I do spray it with more water but now it dripsand removes the primer.
