We are fixing the crumbing mortar in my 1880s fieldstone basement foundation. Some time ago, it had been crudely patched with not much attention to detail or aesthetics. Lynne will take you on a short journey on how this is done with the help of her Niece, Kate who will be doing this repair on her own Michigan basement.
**NOTE#1-Some guys adamantly feel we should have used a lime mortar... My research did not show we needed to do this particularly since the areas we were working on were crumbling patches done perhaps in the 1950s vs 1880s. This Old House used the same materials we used. Here is the link:

**NOTE #2- We worked in small sections. Roughly 2 ft x 2 ft. to keep the wall stable while being repaired.
•While I've seen two different types of mortar used, I decided to use a type S mortar (structural) vs a type N (nonstructural) since this is a foundation that supports a 2-story home:
