In this second of a 5-part series of video interviews, viewers are brought up close and personal with individuals (a parent, a former police officer, a recovering addict, an activist, a counsellor) who have encountered bias in health care as a result of their non-binary gender identities. The interviewees are from diverse backgrounds and they share their manifold experiences in health care and beyond, reflecting on the confusion, mistreatment, and their positive experiences in the healthcare system in Canada.
If gender is a colonial construct, then these individuals’ stories help illuminate an alternative path to understanding those who do not fit within Western gender definitions.
Through their stories, we can learn multiple lessons on providing inclusive, gender-affirming care in our healthcare settings.
