In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our series where we are checking out the Catamarans at the Annapolis Sailboat Show to see what we think would suit us as a full-time live-aboard catamaran as we circumnavigate the globe.
This episode we cover the Fountaine Pajot Astrea 42' Catamaran. We liked this boat a lot for a 40'. But is it big enough and have enough storage capacity to store everything we own as we travel the world? Watch to see what we think.
Hopefully, you enjoyed this episode. If so, give it a thumbs up, share the link with friends that might enjoy this content and subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes.

Ya. I assume if you spend the $$$ they would put a hard top on any cat. Since we will probably buy a 5 yr old used cat, we will have to hope the 1st owner paid for that extra option. But it would be a huge point in its favor if a cat we are looking at has that. We hate dealing with aged sunbrella, fading and ripping with time.

Nice video, as always. :-) In the intro, you say speed is secondary for you. From my PoV, I can agree with secondary, but it shouldn't be ignored completely. There may be a time when you have to move some distance in a hurry, e.g. when a hurricane bears down on the place you're anchored and you just want to move out of its way. I've seen a few videos from other cruisers that really had to hurry because their boat would do only 6 knots, while someone else with a boat doing 9-10 knots would have not much of an issue. Also, if you're going on long passages with just the two of you, shaving a few days off the passage time might save a lot of fatigue... However, I agree with you - speed is not king, if it means you can't bring the stuff you need because the boat needs to be as light as possible, etc...
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
Agree that speed to get from A to B to outrun a storm in a pinch would be valuable, but everything I have seen, you can always motor sail if you really need to get that extra few knots to get somewhere quicker. Even with just 1 engine running you should be able to add a few knots speed with a fairly small hit to the fuel usage. So, Maybe a fast cat can will sail at 10 knots and a Production cat will only sail at 8 knots in the same conditions but, throw on an engine and you will also go 10 in an emergency. Even our crappy Nautitec open 40 we rented that had a shag carpet on the bottom due to lack of cleaning by the charter company would sail along at 10 knots. So I don't think there are any Cats on the market that cannot go above 6 knots.
@realulli
@realulli 5 лет назад
@@Bowmans-Woods well, in theory, it should all boil down to hull speed, which is just a function of water line length. On the other hand, according to the formula, an Outremer 48 shouldn't go much above 10 knots, in practice it does (I think I saw a video where SLV hit 18 knots, also Greatcircle (Lagoon 52) seems to have hit 12 knots as well). The 45 ft cats I've been on all topped out around 9 knots, and they got around 8 with even just 12-15 knots (or so) on the beam. Adding the engines didn't change much... (on the other hand, they were all charter cats with none too clean a bottom...) I agree, there probably are no cats on the market that can't go above 6 knots (unless you count the very small stuff that you can't really live aboard). What you could also do is ask the manufacturer to put copper coat on the bottom instead of the normal anti-fouling, that should keep your speed up for longer... ;-)
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
OK. Well, I have experieced a dirty bottomed charter cat and a big beamy Cat crossing the Atlantic and neither of them had any trouble going 10+ knots regularly. Of course, if there is no wind, any cat will struggle but a performance cat will suffer a bit less, I will give you that.
@alexnikolich2303
@alexnikolich2303 5 лет назад
Another thing to keep in mind about speed. When we're talking about a long passage with limited provisions or an approaching hurricane, things like a clean bottom and folding props make a HUGE difference. Those two items alone can make 2-3 knots of difference. Also, cats are far more weight sensitive than mono's--this should bare into your decision making and storage strategy (think balance).

Hi C.O.F crew, a little information about the length you might consider. If you look at "average wavelength" on the ocean you might find 12-15 ft is quite normal,( look away from larger rolling waves) and if you add that up to the boat length in ft you see that with a 38-42ft boat you will most likely experience "hobby Horsing/rocking" that will feel uncomfortable for sure. ( you just cover 3.5 waves the waterline length) means that the bows will dive into waves and rock you badly. (Bow waves will hit the bridge deck and it sounds bad)This due to the significant wavelength and you will find your self "in-between" waves at times, if you look at a boat of 44-50 ft(+++++) you avoid this "hobby horsing" action of the boat significantly, as the hull length cover several more waves ( As of you cover 4+ waves)and feel and act much more stable. This is something that makes a comfortable feeling and experience so much better as you are looking for your new home away from "terra firm"It's not so many that take this into consideration and surely have a very bad experience and can't understand why it was so not event full as they hoped for. This is just a tip and not meant as a critique in any form, just a heads-up for you before you commit to something you might regret later on. I would highly suggest if you are in the market for a CAT in the size up to say 50ft, Consider to go in the above 44-45ft so you avoid this, better to sacrifice some (nice to have) amendments when buying that can be added later on when the time comes for it.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
Thanks for the Math! I totally agree the longer the boat the more comfortable it will be cutting through waves, or even being at anchor as waves pass you by. I think we are looking at a range of 45-50 as our preferred size. 50 would only be if we could find a really good deal on one that big. We probably don't need that much space, but deals do come along from time to time, so we wouldn't say no to the extra space. 😁

It is a choice you have to make: straight lines are better for interior design, but one must get used not to bump around. Anyway, they could easily round the corners at least. A per the solar panels, they can go covering the dinghy and on the roof. But I hope someday we'll have solar sails...

Cruising Off Duty ducking all the time is something that your body will pay for in the long run with back, neck or knee problems. I’m 6’9” barefoot and the only cats that fit me (as far as I know - at least in their saloon area) are 44+ ft Lagoons that seem to offer the most headroom (6’9” +) . Even the FP Salina 48 has only 6’6” to 6’7” headroom in the saloon area which is not enough (and I love that boat) and that’s a big boat. Yeah, headroom is crucial for tall guys (over 6’5”). 6’9” in the saloon means a lot less down below and there’s a lot of us who’d appreciated if you gave us a few tips on that. Thanks.

I agree with Kevin. We are talking maybe 2 knots of speed difference between a good production Cat and an Outremer of the same size. 2 knots isn't going to allow you to outrun a storm. Besides, you Shouldn't make passages into the path of big tropical storms anyway if you are not in a rush to be anywhere. We won't be. If we see a hurricane or big tropical storm is possible, We will leave way way before it ever gets close. We won't risk anything with our big fat "Slow" Condo-maran. Ha ha. @Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
Yes. I noticed that. The same layout is on the 47'. I dont think it makes a huge difference. It allows people to have room to work on the winches without being right in the personal space of the helmsman and they can pass through from the Back cockput are to the deck easily. If you were single handing you would just put the autopilot on while you get the winches ready to tack. Then tell the autopilot to tack while you work the winches. You would only be a step or 2 from the wheel if you needed to take over from the autopilot quickly. So it's different, but not a bad thing. Extra space for the helmsman in most cases.

Price varies a lot depending on the package and additions you put on. The base price of any of the new mass productions boats is not REAL. Way way too low. You know what is funny. The production cats get a bad rap from the performance builders so that they can justify the premium they are asking their customer to pay, but Lagoons and other production cats have actually won ARC rally's and other long passage races. People selling Outremers and Catanas will tell you how fast their cats are but that is only really true when they are completely empty and high in the water. You load a Cat like that down with tons of water, fuel, crew and everything a crew needs to live with for super long passages and those slim hulled cats get really low in the water and then they don't sail that well at all. Some cruising experience will quickly dispel the value in one unless you plan to sit in a marina with unlimited fresh water at your disposal. In all seriousness, if a soaking tub is a necessity on your live-aboard, consider a coastal condo and elect to charter on occasion. Of course, if money is no object, ignore me and go find it. Alternatively, if your boat doesn't have one, you can always find a resort near a marina/anchorage to ditch your sea legs for a few days.

I think this was a nice boat. The space would be just fine for my family, but the price is still too high for me unless I sold my house or something. I think a stripped version would be fine, you can make a water maker for $1500 to $2000. Ac units around $8k(qty 5 16k-btus might only need 3 or 4) would cool a boat this size Victron power mamagement with start assist circuitry and various controllers and bits $5k, Carbon Foam battery bank(qty4-12V G31) $2100, Wiring and hoses $1k. Solar $3k. Wind Generator $700. Generator options vary, but it would likely need at least a 5kw($5500) for the AC units running with start boost from the batteries. So tricked out you are looking at 22k plus the generator cost for a do it yourself full cruising upgrade. Maybe when the time comes the owners of these will be tired of resealing windows every five minutes. I als worry about big windows like these in really heavy seas and heat management. You get one really killer storm and how many windows are going to blow out on you???? Plus without the overhang like on the Lagoons have over the front windows this thing has got to be a greenhouse. Hence the air conditioners going full blast.

I think it will be the sweet spot in size for a liveaboard couple. That will be next video.

Thanks. Just curious, why you aren't a fan of FP? Quality issues or just not layout or styling choice?

I have also heard a lot of negative things about FP quality. Fairing doesn’t look terribly good to me, also, I don’t like their non skid design, reminds me of a cheap bow rider. That said, I do like the layout of this boat for its size. I prefer two sinks in the master head, although I tend to use the guest head when my wife is on board. Another important feature for me is enough space for towel bars in the head. On the quality issue, it might become more apparent if you go on some older models. Best, Maldwin

Apparently, FP has invested to up their quality for this new generation, a proper survey might help here though

@@Bowmans-WoodsDon't get me wrong, I think FP, Lagoon, Leopard are great production boats. Just in terms of aesthetic I just don't like FP. If you compare their Saba 50 with the new Lagoon 50 or Leopard 50, I think those two are more good looking in terms of finishes and space. I have not sailed on any of the 2018 models.

Thanks Maldwin for your input. I have heard some not so pleasing reports on FP quality too. But you often hear that about all the big production cats. You are not sure who to believe. Fans of each bash the other cats quality.

LMAO..... meanwhile back on earth where people don't just have 1/2 Million + to throw down on a sailboat......

1/2 mil is entry level for a CAT these days. A $mil isn't what it use to be. Thanks to inflation!

Longer would be better at minimizing the hobby horse, for sure.
