I read in your description that you add peroxide to your humidifiers to prevent germs. At what ratio do you add it? I know 1 part peroxide to 2 parts water is often used for root rot and other issues, but that seems awfully strong for humidifier water. Thanks for your help with not only this, but all the other too!

I have a large Alocasia Polly... the leaves it had when I bought it seem to be doing fine but the new leaves have turned yellow. Like those watering pots. Maybe get a few. Do you fertilize the maharani the winter too? Also, I noticed today a small brown spot that looks like it's going rotted. Have any ideas why?
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 3 года назад
I usually don't fertilize my plants in the winter even tho i have grow lights. Basically a good rule of thumb is if it is growing its safe to fertilize and in the case of alocasias I would say definitely do because they will give up on the oldest leaf if there isn't enough nutrients to support the new leaf. so if you see a new leaf emerges and a old leaf starts to die this is why. I try to keep on top of it but it still happens, and right now i am seeing that with my regal shield so... Brown spots on your leaves to me is usually an indicator for either root rot or leaf fungus. Do you mist your plants? if not, I would confidently say that it is root rot. I would probably take it out and have a quick look and see if you need to amend your medium to add more air flow. Good Luck
@sillyNAHcheeto
@sillyNAHcheeto 3 года назад
I'm guessing the success with drying out versus constantly moist has to do with the fact that many plants like alocasia that like a lot of moisture also ironically rot easily when wet. And that has to do with the potting medium. Since you are using pon there is oxygen getting to the roots to prevent rot, whereas people using a denser medium like a standard potting mix are better off letting the plant dry out so as to not suffocate the roots.
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 3 года назад
i don't ever use regular potting mix even if its high quality. i also have to amend it with perlite because i water very heavily so most of my plants would die. I actually started using just perlite for a lot of my plants because of it. plants usually deal with drought a lot better then wet feet. also, plants can grow water roots which can be in water and not rot
@sillyNAHcheeto
@sillyNAHcheeto 3 года назад

Increase your humidity to keep spider mites at bay, you can also spray once a month with 90% alcohol. My Alocasias and orchids are all in self watering pots. Orchids are in Leca,so are my larger Alocasias , the smaller Alocasias are in pon, and I plan to put all of the Alocasias in pon at some point. My $3 Regal Shield that I got at Walmart looks like yours, roots are crazy. I had it outside on the screened porch since I got it in August. It is in a chunky bark mixture, and I have had to move it inside due to temps, but I plan to leave it in the medium it is in since it is doing so well. Interesting video🤔

Hey, I watched your video and I don't think you really touched on humidity very much [i might have just moved it]. Do you live in a humid climate and do you think alocasias need humidity? I have a poly that is in 30% and is doing prettt well. What has been your experience? Thank you.
@BotanicalWoman
@BotanicalWoman 3 года назад
lol thats because I don't concern myself with humidity anymore. I live in seattle. its not the dry here but its not a tropical rain forest either. like today, its 60% relative humidity but probably less inside my apt. i gave up on humidifiers after my first year of plant parenthood. Most of my plants do fine. I think its way more important to getting watering and lighting correct. high humidity can really only be achieved in greenhouse/enclosed environments so....yeah
