Four Day Solo Canoe Trip with my Dog and a Nasty Cold

This is a trip I did with my Jack Russell Terrier buddy, Toby. I managed to get sick during this one but my cold kept pretty well out of my way once I got my days started.
Sorry about the audio quality in areas. My new camera had a defect which caused various audio issues. I've since returned it and the replacement is working great.
I do some product reviews here including the CNOC 2 litre bladder, Gomboy Silky 210 folding saw, Trekology ultralight inflatable pillow and others. Please keep in mind that I have no affiliation with any of these companies. These products have simply worked for me and I enjoy sharing what I've found.
I also demonstrate my water filter system which includes some 3D printed parts that I designed myself. I'll have a link to those models before too long so come back and check soon if this is something you're interested in.
I hope you enjoy the trip, Toby and I had a blast!
Much love,
Troy

I am thrilled to have found your channel again!! My husband was a huge Maddy the Goose fan. ~12-13 yrs ago we were getting into camping and we watched your videos and I think he even got weekly emails. Unfortunately I lost my husband almost 6 yrs ago. But this morning I got this weird craving to make bannock for our daughter. It took me some time to remember the Maddy the Goose name but I did and here you are (with a new companion) and I got the Bannock made. Your recipe is the only one I have ever used! Can't wait to catch up on what I have missed out on. And just maybe you will inspire me to gear up and start with some car camping to get myself back into and get my daughter out there. She was extremely young when my husband got sick so I haven't camped in about 10yrs! Wow crazy to actually realize it's been that long. Well thanks for bringing a smile to my face and some fond memories of my hubby and I at the PC monitor watching the newest video as they came out. Cheers!

Hey Mallard, so glad to hear this video brought you some inspiration... I love hearing that. Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that Maddy passed away this year at the age of 14. She was a special dog and is missed every day and although she lived a long happy life it doesn't make the loss of her any easier. With all the joy and sunshine she brought us, there is now some rain. Having said that, I'm glad she'll live on in her videos. Thanks for taking the time to write and stay tuned, I'm editing a new video with Maddy's little protégé Toby.

Hey Troy. I always enjoy your videos and learn lots from them. Thanks for sharing! Have you ever tried wearing submersible Gore-Tex socks over wool socks, all inside quick-drain shoes/boots? I have had pretty good luck with this combination myself. I hope to see more of your and Toby's adventures! Thanks again!

Cozies, custom handle and ikea stove stand all fit perfectly on both pot/pan sets. The stand travels outside of the pot. I had one that went inside at one point but I didn't want that dirty mess in my pot if I didn't have to. This is, of course, not in stone haha.

@MaddyTheGoose
@MaddyTheGoose 5 лет назад
Thanks man. I'm curious, did any sound issues bother you when watching it and if so, to what degree? As for the camera, I'm filming with the Canon G7 X Mark II. The issue was a grinding noise when focusing that the internal microphone picked up. It's a known issue with some of the cameras but I liked the camera itself so much that I just exchanged it for another which works great as you'll see in the next video. To me it was a very obvious noise but perhaps it because I know exactly where it is.

Impressive portage weight, nicely done. Getting my gear weight down has been an a lot of fun but damn it can be agonizing! I'm no ultra-lighter though, I know that... I'm a just a little-lighter. As for Maddy, she's still kickin' at 14. Her eyesight is fading and she's not as fast or spry as she used to be but she has a good life with Toby and Lucy keeping her young at heart.

Hey Troy, thanks for sharing your trip! I assume your video equipment has changed? I noticed the audio isnt as good/clear and there is a constant annoying hum from the recording device. @MaddyTheGoose 4 года назад
You're right that I got a new camera but it unfortunately had a defect in the area you describe with the auto focus. It wasn't until after I recorded this trip that I noticed the issue and have since replaced it with one that doesn't suffer from the same problem. For interests sake the new camera is a Canon Powershot G7 X, the defect was unfortunate but since it was replaced I'm quite happy with it. Very small and easy to carry in your pocket for the amount of functionality you get with it.

Hi Troy love your videos. I am going on a trip and want to dehydrate my food how long after it dehydrates do I have to use it by? Also do I freeze dry it and then put it in the freezer before I go?
@troygaylord5844
@troygaylord5844 3 года назад
Hey Dave. I tend to use the food I've dried in the same season. I'm sure some of it could keep for much longer but I wouldn't want to risk ruining a trip with food poisoning. Just keep in mind that it's fat that's the real problem. So stuff like ground beef would tend to have a shorter shelf life than something like beans containing no meat. You don't have to freeze it once dried, the most important thing is to take out as much air from the packaging as possible and having a good seal on it. Bon appétit!

What month were you up there? I hope to be paddling in Georgian Bay in a few weeks, cant wait to get back there. If you decide to go with a one man tent, take a look at the pariah breeze mesh tent. I switched over from a mec volt tent and love it. It has no fly, but i bring my siltarp 2 and put the tent under it if it looks like rain. It allows you to still get outside your tent (under the tarp) to cook or just hang out if it rains. Cheers and hope to see more vids.

That trip was in May. Thanks for the tent tip, I'm loving the hammock but when camping with my kids I still use a tent and I always have my eye out for a cost effective and light one.

@@MaddyTheGoose Cold in may but at least the bugs would be minimal ! I'm also using the silky saw, i broke the tip off the first one, mec replaced it no questions asked. I was being very careful to only cut on the pull stroke, but it broke at the same point your bent at 1:26:19. I now try to pull less far back on the saw so if it catches on the forward stroke it will have more blade in the wood. I still think its a great saw !

@@dansmith6508 Yeah, I'm loving the Silky Gomboy 210 but I am on the fence a bit with the durability. If I find I can't trust myself not to break it I may consider bringing my other more durable saw folder, even though it's not as effective a cutter. I would rather have a little less efficiency than no saw at all. At this point though, the Silky is still my go-to saw. We'll see how it goes, stay tuned! :)

Very nice video, but the volume of the sound track was not loud enough no matter what adjustments I made.

I'm sorry to hear that the audio wasn't working for you. I spent a lot of time with the audio do to the camera issues but I thought I had it levelled alright without spiking. I always watch it myself on youtube when I initially upload it privately to make sure things transferred well. Are other youtube videos playing the audio properly for you? I'd be curious if anyone else is having this issue.

Thanks, I'm well over here. Getting though these strange times. Unfortunately Maddy passed away a few months ago. She was 14 years old and she had a good life but it doesn't make the loss any easier. I hope things are well on your end.
