Welcome to MaddyTheGoose where I, Troy, and my dog, Maddy, make our way through some backcountry adventures in our trusty canoe and share our trip video logs and tips and tricks we discover along the way.
Yes, that's a good point. The broth from the beef was discarded and I should have kept it to re-hydrate the potatoes. I just forgot to do that in this case.
Only morons and youtubers use their primary blade to cut firewood real outdoors men carry a small axe and or tomahawk and a folding was too process fire wood I do it's not really that much extra weight too carry and you soon get used too carrying it
How Very Dare you hit your knife with a log - if you had ‘bushcraft skills’ you would know bone dry wood was lying around Everywhere just waiting to be processed into smaller pieces by bashing it with a big rock or even a well placed woodsman’s Miyagi kick. Ahh So!!!
Hey dude. Doubt you’ll see this. You seem to be casual about RU-vid these days. Probably because of life and kids and work and the algorithm not taking off like Mr Beast. But anyway, I found your channel a decade ago back when I was young and I had dreams of kayaking all the way down the Mississippi River. Back when I did tons of hiking. Back before my ankles met Mr Arthritis. Back when I had all the time and none of the money. I just want you to know I love your vids. Even if they are more of a diary than production. I hope that whatever you’re doing out there that it’s going well. Here’s to your future. Here’s to your past. God bless your present.
Hello Troy, I hope you see this. I just want you to know that I keep checking for new adventures and wish you well whatever the case. You did a fine job documenting your trips. Thank you sharing.
I have been with folks and had myself " fish toe". Take a sharp clean needle and force it under the nail in the area of infection. The puss will start to drain, then irrigate with hydrogen peroxide or very clean soap and water. I always carry an irrigation syringe. Once I went to dry feet boots I never had the problem again. Great series, thank you!
How do you dehydrate without a large utility bill ? My air fryer uses a ton of electricity. Is there a cheep way like building a passive solar mettle box with a small fan ? What was that you pot with the potato's geah ? Also what gas does that stove use. If it's propane that would be prefect for me wen I go camping on a budget.
I store them in a Rubbermaid bin on the shelf and if there's any left at the end of the season I'll often use them again the following year. I seem to remember hearing that it's not recommended to store dried items in the freezer, although I can't say for certain.
I did a 12 day solo trip to Algonquin about a decade ago. Started north, into the interior and back up north. I underestimated the weight of the portages as well. The 1st one, short one, was a complete failure. All portages turned into doubles, which of course threw off the schedule, but made the trip much more enjoyable. Longest portage was 5.3 km. The experience was physically challenging, but what an experience. It certainly left a mark.
I am thrilled to have found your channel again!! My husband was a huge Maddy the Goose fan. ~12-13 yrs ago we were getting into camping and we watched your videos and I think he even got weekly emails. Unfortunately I lost my husband almost 6 yrs ago. But this morning I got this weird craving to make bannock for our daughter. It took me some time to remember the Maddy the Goose name but I did and here you are (with a new companion) and I got the Bannock made. Your recipe is the only one I have ever used! Can't wait to catch up on what I have missed out on. And just maybe you will inspire me to gear up and start with some car camping to get myself back into and get my daughter out there. She was extremely young when my husband got sick so I haven't camped in about 10yrs! Wow crazy to actually realize it's been that long. Well thanks for bringing a smile to my face and some fond memories of my hubby and I at the PC monitor watching the newest video as they came out. Cheers!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand the nostalgia for Maddy the Goose recipes. I am actually in a low point in my life right now and that's why I'm back here, familiar friends and happy times :)
I liked your Adventure and love your Dog I used to breed Jack Russell dogs And still have two we live on a Yacht and they go everywhere with me they are the most faithful and fearless dog’s A Bear wouldn’t stand a chance against Toby😁great show look after the pup. Cheers
YOU are the person that got me into camping over 10 years ago. Just graduated high school and None of my friends enjoyed camping so I came to RU-vid on my parents Computer and searched “ camping by yourself “ and BAM I was hooked from your channel. I still enjoy solo camping/cooking just not as much as I have a son and wife now, thank you for taking the time to film your adventures.
Thank you so much, I love reading these kinds of comments, they really do put a smile on my face. I know what you mean about it being harder to get out solo once you have a family but it's still nice when you're able to make the time. I wouldn't be surprised if I make more videos once we're empty nesting here. Thank you for taking the time to write.
Troy can you advise which is a better trip for boys 7-9 years the canoe lake to burst island lake trip or can u suggest another ? We will be renting a canoes x 2 and bring everything else or a trip near the southwest of the park?
Hi Troy! I got into hammocking and looking for advice regarding underquilts. What is the one you are using? Is it down? My hammock is an Hennessy… does any underquilt fit for any hammock? Thanks!
Welcome back Troy! You were the reason I got into canoeing 10 years ago. Bought an old town Katadyn fiberglass canoe and did thousands of hours on the Connecticut and Shenandoah Rivers plus multiple lakes and dams. I just gave away that canoe to a good friend when I moved to Florida. Bought my first Kayak and keeping the tradition of paddling on the water alive. Thanks for the videos and God Speed Maddy! (And welcome Toby!)
Troy how did you find the transition from tent to hammock? I have a dog too and wondered if you like it better than a tent. I am thinking of getting a hammock
The transition was pretty smooth. We found our Jack Russel, Toby, shortly after I got my hammock so I set it up in the basement and slept in it with him as a pup for a couple of weeks. Jacks are known to like to be close and cuddle when they sleep but I just wanted to make sure he was comfortable with the hammock. It wasn't a problem at all and even our older dog "Lou" did great, who is a slightly larger mix. I have a double layered bottom on mine to add a littler extra protection from the dog nails but I haven't had any issues yet. As far as finding the hammock comfortable, when I had it setup in the basement and couldn't sleep in bed, I would go downstairs and sleep in the hammock like a log. I couldn't imagine setting up a tent in the basement and going there to sleep better than in bed. Having said that, setting up the hammock is a lot more finicky and can take more time and adjustments than a modern self supporting tent. I don't mind that sort of thing but I can see how some would find it annoying. Hope that helps... cheers!
If you happen to still have an old gas stove with a oven pilot light they make a great food dryer. Make sure you crack the door with a thick pot holder to let the moisture escape.
Great to see you again Troy. I always enjoy your adventures and cooking. Hopefully someday I can get away myself and experience an adventure like this. Thanks for sharing 👍
