Mark Whitten's 12 RBIs in one game was and still is only the 2nd time it's ever been done. The other guy was another Cardinal, Jim Bottomly in 1924. Rocky Colavito of the Indians hit 4 homers on June 10, 1959. The thing that was especially notable about that accomplishment was that it happened at Baltimore's old Memorial Stadium which, at the time, was the most difficult place to homer in all of baseball. Up to that point, no TEAM had ever hit more than 3 homers in a game there, but on that night Rocky did it all by himself.

i can't imagine seeing 4 in one game, it's a rare thing that's only happened only 16 times in history. i do remember a couple 3 homer games that were special, toronto's george bell hitting 3 on opening day in kansas city (all off bret saberhagen who won the cy young twice), and george brett hitting 3 in yankee stadium of hall of famer catfish hunter, (game 3 in the 1978 playoffs) brett would hit another to the warning track in the ninth off goose gossage, that would have tie the game, but not to be, the yankees would go on to win the world series against the dodgers.
