I loved this -these styles definitely appeal to me. I’m thankful to have inherited many furniture pieces from the 30s from my late father’s aunt. I think that actress may have been a very young Carole Lombard.

Lisa! You are absolutely my favorite teacher AND show host! Watching you and the work and art you are exposed to on the daily make me wish that I had gone into design when I was younger! It's fascinating and such beauty for the eyes and it does both my heart and soul good to take it all in, especially in these crazy times! I have a new idea of what the Scandinavian decor is about as what I had seen before on RU-vid was a very stark black and white which is also very pretty but the soft tones were news to me, as was King Gustav! The woman in that photo was actually not an actress at all, but an English socialite named Baba (Barbara) Beaton. Her brother, Cecil Beaton, was a famous photographer (he took the photo). The all-white/mirrored party room she’s standing in was designed by Cecil’s friend Syrie Maugham and became an iconic room at the time.

Gustavian also has very light, sometimes whitewashed, wooden flooring, and wooden linen cupboards with handmade paintings of northern flowers as ornaments. Lots of soft yellow. Tall tiled stoves in every room. Beautiful, cosy style! My grand-parents were really into it.

As a young bride I was fortunate to discover a contemporary Scandi furniture store called Houseworks. Fell in love with teak and the clean lines. All these years later, they mix & match with everything else along the way. I'm so glad I stumbled onto my style early on.

I had never heard of Gustavian Scandinavian, but I swear that is how a third if not more of my families and friends decorated their homes in the Midwest, where I grew up! I thought it was a weird traditional-meets-farmhouse thing! But it makes sense, there are a lot of Swede, Dutch and Danish communities in the Midwest.

Hi Lisa! I just found your show, and really love how you've found so many good images to illustrate each look. Really well done, informative and entertaining! - Being Swedish, I absolutely love the Gustavian 'language' and palette. However, I don't interpret this as being transitional at all - here in Sweden, we perceive the Gustavian style as being completely classical, and prefer real antiques, if we can afford them, or create the feel, using later reproductions, that can be found 'everywhere'. - You can, of course, make a transitional style work, with some important Gustavian antique, or reproduction ingredients - preferably chairs. As you said, the neutral to soft/earthy palette really sets the tone. - Everybody knows what a 'Clean, Modern Scandi Style' looks like. Clean, white, natural woods, MCM pieces, etc. It's still quite popular over here. But many have tired of the all white walls, and a new 'Cozy, Transitional Scandi Style' has grown in popularity. It is characterized by a more earthy palette, with painted walls, and at least a feature wall covered in wallpaper, (William Morris patterns are very popular). This 'Cozy Scandi Style' also features more antique and vintage pieces of furniture, mixed with newer ones, and has a more eclectic, cozy, homey feel. If any Scandinavian style should categorize as transitional, I think it would be this 'Cozy Swedish, or Cozy Scandi' wallpaper meets earth tone, wrinkled linens, natural materials, antiques, vintage, a bit of Wabi Sabi, with modern - style. - Greetings from Sweden/ Ingela @inglish_home_and_garden (Sorry for the long comment.)

I love transitional style and bringing elements from all the styles you mentioned. I tend to stick or be drawn to the soft tones blue especially with a mix of traditional and contemporary. I like coastal farmhouse the most.

Love this video. I think based on all my travels and having lived around the world my style has evolved. I love Sweden and France; I can see the connection between Swedish King and Louis....I do have Louis in my living room; which also goes with transitional approach; It reflect my travels and my personality; the classics mixed with a bit of other pieces; Love your history of architecture and furniture....great job as always..

I always thought Gustavian was traditional (the style and color of my dining chairs) but perhaps the cleaner lines move it into the transitional camp. Not important anyway, and thanks for another enjoyable video (which I didn't discover until 2021).

Art Deco grew out of Art Nouveau; where Art Nouveau emphasized line using “natural” shapes, Deco went geometric...but never stopped paying attention to the line.

Love love love this vid! I liked a fancier version of farmhouse but that wasn't glam, and had no idea it was gustavian scandi! Yay! Yes, Gustavian is much more refined than basic Shabby Chic, and more restrained than regular Farmhouse. Bit of an outlier, and one of my FAV's! :)

OH...for *years* now I have been fan of Gustavian Scandinavian. It's so comfy as you note but also so very very elegant. One detail that wasn't mentioned but I'd like to note is a ceramaic tile heatstove instead of an open fireplace, this is very characteristic of elegant vintage homes in Scandinavia. The tiled surfaces are very beautiful. In a modern setting room companies such as Jøtul and Stuv sell stunning examples in different colors of enameled cast iron. La Castellamonte in Italy still makes the classic tile version. So beautiful!!

@@LisaHoltDesign Jøtul and Stuv definitely have US distribution (both are in consideration for our own renovation) . La Castellamonte does have US EPA emissions certifications so maybe? Their web site will auto translate from Italian and the translation is good with good info.

Dear Lisa, "Deco" is actually "Art Deco", which is why people often confuse it with Art Nouveau ;) at least in my french book it is ;)

My grandmother danced at Radio City Music Hall during the 1930s and then became a florist after she retired from dancing. Her style was VERY much Hollywood Regency. Even her shower curtains were like being on stage, there were never less than two decorative layers of fabric and ruffles to mimic stage curtains with tie backs, and then the utilitarian inner curtain inside the tub. Of course they opened in the middle, no going around the side to the right or to the left, no ma’am. It was a STAGE!

Oh wow! Thank you for the Gustavian Scandinavian expose. This is such an easy crossover/mix w modern scandinavian, especially If you live in an older building. I love the colour scheme - modern scandi can get a bit too woody beige, like two day old oatmeal 🙄 - but adding the pale blues, sage green and greys always melds well. Personally I prefer the rustic old country version, even more pared down than Gustavian, and it’s usually comes w a wider-but-still-muted palette, to mix w the modern version, but it’s hard to beat Gustavian Scandi for sheer refined elegance.

You description of Gustav III, reminded me of "The Vasa". And yes, I discovered, it was designed, ordered by, Gustav III. He kept adding features (more cannons, more decks) while visiting the King of France. Check out how ornate it is. Preserved in brackish waters, after it capsized on it's maiden voyage.

… I’m afraid it was Gustav II Adolf/Gustavus Adolphus back in the early 1600s who comissioned The Vasa. Gustav III lived about 150 years later, and is known for getting murdered at his own masqued ball. (Sorry. Swede here 🙋🏻‍♀️)
