These Poultry Ticks act more like a bed bug in a chicken coop than a tick. We had dealt with lice and mites in the past, but this was a whole new nightmare. We had never heard of Fowl Ticks and hope our awful experience can spread awareness and help others that may be going through this. #chickens #chickencoop #ticks

Ricardo when you build the new coop use silicone on ever joint/gap so the ticks can't hide, if you're going to paint it use silicone that you can paint over.

Another treatment you can apply to the coop, bedding and dust the birds with is food safe Diatomaceous earth. It is a ground up form of diatom shells that are safe for the birds and will not effect the eggs. It's cheaper and safer than the other treatments you mentioned. Spraying lemon oil on all of the wood also chases the bugs away. If you have lemons or oranges grind them up and soak them in mineral oil then strain it and use as a spray.

you could fumigate coop by burning sulfur , sulfur fumes gets in all cracks and anywhere you're not able to spray , it will kill everything and leaves a coating that all bugs stay away from. I always dust coop with wood ashes mixed with sulfur and sand before putting bedding down and it keeps all bugs away.

You can mix it with diatomaceous earth and put cedar shavings..probably you need to use less wood and try using aluminum when making your next coop and more ventilation... get a couple of guinea hands..
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
We do have another coop made of metal siding panels for our bigger flock, but this coop was just a small hen house for our bantam flock. The DE didn’t seem to affect the ticks but we did have a lot of ventilation. Our Guinea hens were unable to access the ticks as they acted like beg bugs and not really ticks, they only come out at night and hide all day. I guess sometimes things can happen as we free range and allow wild birds into this area, our enclosed run for our chicks and pullets we sell was completely unaffected as no wild birds can be allowed in. We’ll just have to keep a close eye now that we know these creatures exist. I was used to looking out for mites and lice, but never thought chickens got these bed bugs sort of parasites

Copper naphanate is used to prevent insect damage to wood but it stinks worse than chicken squat. I used it to treat the floor or my coop and it needed to air out for a week lol. Indoor fogger for bed bugs is the pyrothrin stuff, I use it for yellow jackets nesting in walls. DE in your coop and bedding may help as prevention to nasty creatures.

If you place the coop under a tree, the ticks can jump off and they can hibernate in the bark for 12 months, longer than in dead wood. No wild birds are needed for contamination because the ticks can come from a last years wild nest. So. I would check the tree and clear it from nesting material, also spray the bark with bio agent which isn't harmful to wild birds and trim the tree. Also, check the undergrowth and surrounding bush for places where water ends up. Good video

These poultry ticks are brutal; they multiply very fast and hide in extremely thin crevices despite their size. They can live for more than 3 years without a host. They only come out at night, like a zombie army, to suck blood-lots of blood-while birds sleep (it's more like a horror movie). Birds will start losing weight, looking pale, pecking aimlessly, becoming weightless, and ultimately facing immediate death. If they attack ducks, it's game over. The ducks will stop eating, moving, laying eggs, mating, and their feathers will start falling off. They can die within a few hours or days. To combat this infestation, you have to take drastic measures. Burn the coop, dip all the birds in treated warm water, spray your compound, and build a new coop. It's essential to clean the new coop regularly since the ticks are attracted by poultry droppings.

6 months later here. Horrific! My skin is still crawling! So Cal here as well, next to AZ. Two minutes of research kept repeating that they are from Persia. I believe that is Iran or Iraq. First thing I thought of was our borders have been wide open for over two years and illegals are coming from all over the world through California, Arizona borders by the hundreds of thousands, and even millions now. Someone (hatchery) did tell me they are bringing chickens. So I wouldn't be surprised if they were already infested or if we have illegals from Iran or Iraq area or any other place in the world they may have come from. Thank goodness you figured out a way to fight them. I have a metal shed that came with the little house that I'm fixing up for a coupe. I bought insulation for it due to extreme heat but I'm now thinking I better not use it because I wouldn't be able to see those creepers! Will pray about it. 2 families of neighbors do not have coops in the heat and say they have never lost any. We average 120 and up here and it reached over 130 when I first moved here. Coyotes, raccoons, skunks and Raptors are the worst but I have a little land and wanted to give them some free range. The ticks seem to like the wood so maybe they won't like the metal as much. Was going to use wood nesting boxes but might change that as well now that I've watched your video! I hope you have totally recovered by now!

A little trick another RU-vidr uses for mites might help here. I don't know the RU-vidrs' name but this guy sticks wide double-sided tape (I don't know where he buys it maybe online) completely around the ends of each perch. Mites do the same thing, feeding at night and hiding in crevices during the day. This would help catch all the ticks, in particular the baby ticks that you can barely see. Although this couple had such a massive number of them I agree with their decision to dismantle their coop, despite how beautiful it was and it must have hurt them to do it.

I cried after watching this video because I can totally relate. I’m going through this now but with a different type of pest called stick tight flea. Last Sunday one of my Isa Browns was acting odd and I thought she was egg bound. After soaking her multiple times we were inspecting her and noticed something by her ear. I took pictures and asked on a backyard chicken group what the bugs were because they didn’t look like mites or lice. They seem to be a rare insect because I’m having a hard time finding information like you guys did. These insects are like ticks and they can live on the host for 4-6 weeks! If we didn’t notice her being off she probably would have died from anemia. We have been rubbing Vaseline on their comb, wattles, ears and around their eyes to smother the fleas. We are spraying the permethrin and using lime and DE around the coup. Also cleaning very thoroughly. It’s a lot of work but we are doing everything we can to help them.

We also rub our legs down with coconut oil to prevent the fleas from getting on us. I didn’t know how bad they were until I looked at my pants and they were crawling up my pants legs. One was embedded in my leg. I had to really scrape to get it off. We also strip off our clothes before going in the house.

Thanks for sharing both the good and bad. I wish you the best for the future! It may be worth sealing the cracks on the new coop with some kind of sealant. The big tubes of construction adhesive are cheap, and add a lot of strength when cured. If it happens again in the future, You may be able to completely seal the coop with plastic, and fumigate it while keeping it away from the chickens. It may take weeks, and multiple treatments to make sure they're all gone though, especially the eggs.

Thank you we are so glad the nightmare is over and they are gone now. Very true, we are considering sealing all the cracks and trim edges in our next coop to prevent homes for pests. The article I linked in the description goes into that with good detail

I am so done with chickens sadly it was great for about two years and then a disaster. Now I’m down to two one is blind and it’s getting cold here in Michigan so this is not going anywhere but taking care of them until the end very disheartening put so much effort in and now it’s just sad……It’s best just to get my eggs from the Amish or farms.

I think that metal coops are much more effective at controlling pests than wood. I got rid of all the wood also known as "wood starvation" as last summer, I had another surprise I found out that I had termites and I had such a hard time to get rid of all of the wood and control through pesticides. Never ever I will built anything from wood, wood is a breeding ground for all kinds of mites and ticks and the sorts.

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry you guys went through this, however, I am glad you got to them immediately. Now, I have to check my girls coop-condo today. I am totally cautious now! I ordered the #OrangeGuard and a pump spray bottle anyway. Thank goodness cooler weather coming in. I have so much work to do, this week! Side Note: #Awesome outfit by the way, Brown suits your hair and make your skin glow. You should try a nude to medium brown eye and lip color. #Thankyouforsharing #Keepupthegreatwork

This is such a wonderful channel, a REAL learning experience, successes and failures. We’re always suspicious of “new” insects/diseases. Can you imagine if a person had a hatchery and got invaded … yikes! I can tell you, this is one time my husband commented, he’s glad we have winter here in our northern climate, Nova Scotia, Canada. Seems many homestead families have, and are moving from California to North Carolina … you can even have a bonfire there … 😄🇨🇦

Thank you, didn’t know that about fire ant hills, may have to try that. We love elector psp. We got rid of our mites and lice years ago with it and havent seen them since. I had a tick in a shot glass of elector psp for 2 days though and it was still squirming around 🤢 the orange peel extract (orange guard) killed it on contact though
