Foxbody Black Interior - Do it right or not at all! SEM Paint How-To //TIPS05E01 

Man I've been a GM guy my whole life and recently picked up a 88 supercharged notchback that's rust free but has been hacked up by numerous people. Watching your videos I'm hooked now! I think I'm starting a Mustang obsession 🤦‍♂️ Help me😂

I use sem trim black and iv found its a dead on match to fords black interior in the fox cars. Keep up the good work bud!

I'm all for keeping it orginal. I kept my regetta blue interior and I plan to just swap the seats and carpet black.

TIP I’m with you 100% on this one I had the porno red in my 91 GT and switched to black and I sometimes regret my decision because my interior was mint with the exception of driver seat and door handle pad. Awesome advice

I went through about 2-1/2 red interiors in my 87 LX, even switched to GT seats and power doors, until I found an almost mint back 90 LX interior in 2000 for a little over $100 minus seats and carpet. I could have sold it for a lot more, but kept it, added 02 leather seats and new carpet. I do kinda miss the red, but not enough to change it back! Great info Chris!

These vids are the sickest things to watch, and also super informative, im 17 and just last weekend bought my 4 fox, shes an 81 ttop with a 351 originally a 255 but it needs everything from interior motor trans body work and rear end but these how to vids are pretty much all i use, so thanks alot

I had a all red interior, even gauge cluster bezel and steering wheel was red. I regret painting it a little but it was just too much red. I saved the red A pillars and still have the red the steering wheel, swapped the all red door panels for ones that have the black stripe on them. SEM makes the best paint and it matches the best so it can always be painted back.

I had a 50 shades of gray interior until I painted/dyed it black. I’m in Florida so the humidity sucks. To counter this I experimented and found that if I waited until about mid day in the sun and used a heat gun to warm up the piece the paint dried without issue. I let all of the panels dry for about two weeks. Even with several coats you may scratch something reinstalling however one quick spray covers that up. The only issue is the long panel one the door opening that covers the carpet, the paints rubs away from your shoe getting in and out. I may try a exterior clear coat on that

I personally like every color they offered back in the day but I think if you throw a little black in here and there it makes the red/blue/tan whatever it may be pop even more 👌.

I had to redye the factory red interior in my vert because all the plastic was sun bleached. I took everything apart like you did and used SEM Napa Red, it turned out great. It was the black 89 vert with Sterns at Foxtoberfest. If you didn't notice the interior was redyed then that means I did a good job 😂

Looks great bro. My 90 LX has mint blue interior that’s never been touched. I purchased the car from a family member of an old lady that bought it new but recently passed away. The car was a 4 cylinder auto that I made a fuel injected 5.0 five speed. I love blue and red interiors and it’s funny because back in the early 2000s I hated them. Now that I’m 35 years old I would prefer any other color besides black.

Great video! Been on the fence about going full black interior...mine is grey. What I would like to do is go darker on the grey, instead of black. Do you have a reliable source to get SEM or Mar-Hyde paint in Canada? I haven't been able to locate in my area. Thanks!

How well does the SEM paint hold up on seats? I re doing my seats on my Lincoln town car and I sure hope it holds up.

I am about to do this to my car. I have always loved the all black interior but I have been having 2nd thoughts about doing it. I have the blue interior in my 87 notch which is 20 shades and I dont care for it much. Im parting out my 89 GT which has smoke gray interior. I think smoke gray would look great in the 87 medium shadow blue notch. Still can't go wrong with all black. Nice intro btw 👌

If you have a panel with a bad paint job hit it with easy off oven cleaner and then scrub with soap and water after it sits a few minutes. You might have to take several passes, but it works well. I’ve tried it myself and it did not appear to negatively affect the plastic panels.

As easy it looks man I’ve been fighting with my interior for days. I take the right steps as far as prep goes and when the paint dries, there’s white spots on the fresh paint and I have no clue why

I've gt an 88 tan. The tans a bit much tho needs some black to offset it but I'll keep alot tan still. Just carpet headliner dashpads ftmp. Custom seat upholstery tie it together ❤

Last year I fully redid the smoke gray of the interior of my 89. I would like to add that doing a SEM low luster clear at the end keeps that perfect non gloss finish and protects the color coat. I even tried scratching the finish product with my keys lightly with no damage. On the open/close Emblems for the Vents ask your wife or girlfriend to use a opaque white uv curing finger nail polish. It comes out looking 100% OE. As for the 87-89 smoke gray LMR sells ( same as SEM) it is not a perfect match. I purchased a can and did a test spray on a spare smoke gray kick panel. The color comes out too dark. I ended up having custom SEM paint matched to a NOS fuse cover and A pillar Molding for the dark charcoal color. So if you are only planning on doing your console or dash you will not be happy. You need to do everything or nothing unfortunately. The smoke gray over the years tends to get darker with sun damage and environmental contamination.

Two more questions: are those pads 3m very fine 220 grit, and did you dilute the super clean or go full strength? Thanks.

I'm debating if I should switch mine to black or just swap the carpets and seats to black. As a mechanic, gray seats are a nightmare to keep clean.

My 86 GT is all original with 97k miles. Oxford white with blue interior. I'm going with original exterior and all black interior. Sorry, bro. We have a black on black Explorer and can't get enough of it. Black it is. Lol

Have you ever cut the roof off a car and changed it...there is a t-top roof for sale...but I'm not sure if I trust myself to do it right.

What goes around comes around. My interior is still factory gary withe the original stripedor tweed cloth seats. Never wanted to follow the interior color change fad. Interior should be inviting not like a cave. Lol. When you open the door you should get that man the iinside is awesome. Black is nice but at times to monochromatic. Interior color should accent the car or contrast the exterior. Good jod dude like all vids.

I just bought another four eye because it had red... I'm over grey.... Seems everything the last 30 yrs is grey or grey and black.

I prefer a mint gray over black. The problem with gray is that it shows age way worse

This very misleading these Interior spray paint work great on non high traffic areas the dash is a perfect example ..Now try to spray your scuff plates not going to work very well or toe kicks center console ? Yeah that's stuff is not going to work .There's a reason the scuff plates, toe kicks , quarter plastic are molded with the plastic color all the way thru .. Not to say it won't look good for a period of time but unless your super careful the paint is going to scuff off that's why the factory did it with molded plastics.. Of course black interior trim pieces are easy to come by but blue red tan different story ..But this paint just never hold up in high traffic areas IE the scuff plates
