On this episode I show you how to track down a coolant leak on your vehicle - specifically on a 1987-1993 Ford Fox body Mustang 5.0. I had recently changed the water pump on this 1990 Ford Foxbody LX Convertible 5.0. The client had mentioned that he noticed that there was coolant on the garage floor under his car. After looking at the car we could not find where the coolant was coming from. Finally we noticed that the coolant was coming from the passenger firewall area which is a tell tale sign that the heater core is leaking. In order to change the heater core in a Foxbody Mustang, the whole dash and console needs to be removed. Alternatively, the heater core can be bypassed to rectify the leak until a later date when you have the time/money to fix the leaking heater core. Follow along as I show you how to bypass your heater core on your Fox body Mustang.

What a nightmare!! Dreaded having to do this repair within the first month of getting my fox. Great video as always brother! And for those that don’t make the same mistake I did, do not forget the flow restrictor that goes into the inlet tube when replacing their heater core…hopefully that saves someone the headache that I had to deal with.

I have done a number of heater cores. Not too bad after the first 2 (learning curve). I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been listening to your podcasts with Chris since day one. First one, I remember I was up on a ladder 20 feet in the air changing a light fixture on my house and it was - 8 degrees and snowing. The most recent one, I was outside again doing yard work. You guys are a HOOT! The neighbors must think I am crazy or wonder who I am listening to as I was not using ear buds. HAHA So, I also have blue blood. My dad went to work at a Ford dealership when he was 17 and he is 73 and is still there as parts manager. My brother works there with him in parts. I also had worked there for a number of years in parts and ten years as a technician. My family has all had foxbody mustangs (even my mother) and we still have foxbodies to this day. My dad has a VORTECH supercharged 2008 BULLITT. My brother has a 1988 hatchback 5.0L 5 speed and a 1999 GT. My sister has a 2001 BULLITT and a 1987 GT. I currently have a 2013 GT and a PAXTON supercharged 1990 GT (which I owned since 1994). I just recently picked up my first set of RECARO seats (I know Chris likes seats!) ... but it came with a Ford Performance Focus ST Stage 3 going to be my daily driver. Keep doing the podcasts and we enthusiasts will keep on listening. CHEERS.

Unless you live in Alaska or Buffalo or any of those places you can survive fine without a heater core,it gets cold where i live during winter but its mainly high 30s and then next day it will be 70 then 16 the next day,lol,just keep a nice clean towel out back and when your windshield start getting fogged up just wipe it down,works fine. I scored a original Ford heater core for my 91 in the original box (you are more apt to find a sewing needle in the middle of the Atlantic ocean than one of these cores,lol) ,i keep the core in my safe, only thing stopping me from changing it is that my dash is cracked in a few places and i want to replace it when i do my core,reproduction cores are worthless. Good quality dashes (used or new) are another sewing needle item, ive actually seen a new dash in a box,i thought i would go blind after that,seeing forbidden things and all that,lol, but the guy wanted too much and it wasn't the right color, love your channel man,been subscribed for a long time.

@@Neffboy15He must be talking about a 50s model car,lol, you ain't getting this heater core out from top, bottom left or right,dash removal required,on some 79 to 93 Mustangs that didn't come with A/C getting the heater core out is a bit easier because the box is smaller and more easy to get to, maybe thats what hes talking about.

I still smell coolant strongly in the car but only when i run the fan and i already have the heater core bypassed, its been bypassed a year. Is that just from the remaining coolant that maybe left dried in to the carpet even though I only smell it when the fan is on? Or maybe a head gasket leak? Even thought at this point i don't seem to be getting low on coolant but haven't driving it but maybe 50 miles this year. I need to check the oil but no overheating or white smoke out the pipes either.
@KASLCustoms
@KASLCustoms 5 месяцев назад
Its probably just left over in the heater box and/or carpet
@mattk3035
@mattk3035 5 месяцев назад
@@KASLCustoms how long would it last in the heater box? Maybe I need to just let the fan run a long time? I've never let run for more than like 10 seconds because it smells so strong. I have the new heater core just need to find time to replace it. I guess after that if I still smell it then it's probably still a head gasket leak? Because there's no smell of it at all until I turn the fan on. Even if I sit on the passenger side, I can't smell anything til the fan is on and then it's too strong to keep going.

Hey bro I have an 87 Ford Mustang Fox body with the 347 Stroker and a T5 transmission I replaced every part around the transmission new clutch new flywheel new throwout bearing new throwout bearing retainer pilot bearing all kinds of stuff down there took it for a ride and was extremely easy on the car considering all the parts I put in it when I parked and noticed tranny fluid under the car so I looked obviously and behind the tranny mount it cracked the case to the transmission Halfway Around the trainee why would this happen I'm not sure if you could give me some ideas on why this would happen I would really appreciate it thank you
@KASLCustoms
@KASLCustoms 2 года назад
Hey pal. Sorry to hear that. That’s pretty crazy…? Maybe the trans case was already cracked and when you removed it you opened it up? That’s about all I can think of. I’m not sure how it would crack during R&R 🤷‍♂️

It’s a long story but the short version is: The gases being introduced through the EGR are hot - which are only good to have upon cold start situations. The coolant running through your throttle body/egr spacer are to cool that area during normal running conditions because you want the air going into your engine to be as cold as possible for both power and efficiency

Hey buddy hope all is well aye! I have developed a weird coolant leak near the back of my passenger side upper head area dripping down on the starter between the engine block and transmission on my 1988 lx vert 😔 go figure now after my fox is back together after doing the AOD to T5 swap and new radiator. What in the hell would u suspect the leak to be? I only notice the drips after car sits overnight after a drive. The car doesn't run hot or overheat no smoke from tail pipes and no coolant in the oil. I don't smell any coolant from inside the car or see any fluid from the hole on firewall. I'm fearing the worse but really stumped!😭🙈. Any thoughts be much appreciated as I finally got my car running after 5 weeks on jack stands. Much respect from down here in the states in Maryland... drink a Labatt blue for me! Haha. Cheers 🍻
@KASLCustoms

@@KASLCustoms hey buddy I rented a coolant pressure tester today and pumped up to 16 psi. Welp I went to look at back of upper intake and the egr coolant hose that goes from throttle body down to lower intake side was leaking near back of intake and running down leaking. I pulled the upper intake and noticed Holly shit! There is no clamp on the end of that hose that slides over the nipple of that fitting... so I'm hoping I get lucky. What a gong show to have to pull the upper intake. Rather be shot or have bleach poured in my pee hole 😂 haha. Cheers 🍻 aye! I could drink a Case of Labatt blue after today.
